Thomas should argue that he knew full well that Duckwood was sliding in to take his legs (FREE KICK THOMAS). With his past experience of seeing Rohan's leg snap, he knew his only 2 options were to hurdle Duckwood or get low and save himself with a shirtfront. Lindsay is old and couldn't hurdle Duckwood's massive scone so he took the only safe option left.

From the footage Thomas did hit Selwood in the head. However, Selwood contributed to it by dropping to his knees and undertaking the standard "fellate the field umpire" position.
