Doesn't matter what you say. At the end of the day, a player who can play more than one role just as well as a player who only plays one role will always be considered a better and more versatile player.

Hawthorn might have enough midfielders, but if Rioli were good enough, he'd be playing as a full time midfielder. The really good players should be able to go into the midfield when required and dominate.

In five years time, if Rioli starts in the FP and dominates, moves into the midfield and dominates there too, then he will be doing more than I expected of him.

At the moment, I can't see him dominating in the midfield. He might be a very good forward pocket player, but a player like Palmer will be able to be a very good player whether he plays forward, middle or back.

Umm... my point had nothing to do with your argument that he's better than Houli, my point was related to the comment that he needs to play midfield, which he doesn't. I don't see how being just a FP is such a bad idea. Fevola is just a FF. Does that make him average? Not really.

in terms of quantity, does this look like the best crop of young players to come through for a while?

I know that previous seasons have had some incredible standouts, but if you were to get all the nominees for the RS and compare them all, on potential this group stands out above the rest by a mile to me.

In saying that, a few seasons, injuries and work ethic could turn some of the real stars into second rate players, and some of the ones that seem like nothing special at this stage into real superstars of the competition.

While it is fun to talk about how good each is, and how much better our player is than yours, its the age old time will tell.

I mean, for a while we were glad we drafted bradley and johns.......worked out well for us.......but on the flip side, didnt Cox come from the rookie draft?

No pre-season and it's quantity not quality. If the rising star award is going west this year, it's going to Palmer. No doubt about it.

If it was quality over quantity, I'd go with Ibbtson over Palmer. Was so impressive last week without having to rack up the touches.

As for the order, I reckon Cotchin will be a clear #1 but don't be surprised if the boy in the orange boots becomes something super-special.

Well it's about a number of things really. If it's about quality, Cotchin wins it. If its about overall performance, Palmer wins it. It's a balance. Palmer's overall consistency, performance and what he has done will make him higher than Ibbotson IMO. My point was that I can't see Ibbotson winning it, it's a bit random. Freo's no 1 ball carrier and 22 touches a game in his first season. Hard to top that. Cotchin is really the only one who can pinch it, if he pulls some more games like WC out, he's a chance.

Pretty much agree mate.

Rhys Palmer ahead of Cotchin. Cotchin will be the better footballer in the end becuase his disposal is clean at all times.

Kreuzer may end up more valuable than both of them, not better, but of more value. It's amazing people forget how awful Dean Cox, Hamish McIntoch, David Hale, Aaron Sandilands and David Hille where at the same age.

In terms of perspective for this years rising star award, (in no way am I comparing them as long term players, but just for this years award) this is how Ibbotson and Cotchin compare for people that don't get to see Fremantle play.

Garrick Ibbotson:
Disposals: 18.3
Marks: 5.1
Tackles: 2.6
Goals: 0.5
Clearances: 1.8
Inside 50: 3.2
Rebound 50: 2.1
Contested Possessions: 2.2
1%ers: 3.6
Errors: 4.9

Trent Cotchin:
Disposals: 17.4
Marks: 5.3
Tackles: 2.2
Goals: 0.9
Clearances: 1.8
Inside 50: 2.3
Rebound 50: 0.7
Contested Possessions: 2.8
1%ers: 2.6
Errors: 4.4

Not much between them, but I think Ibbotson has the edge this year.

How many games have they each played?

lol @ the cats fans coming into the thread and saying that even though harry cant win it ..... Feeling a little left out? Im sure Gary Ablet would win it to but he isn't eligible either....

statistics are the most irrelevant statistic in football.

1. Trent Cotchin
2. Matthew Kreuzer
3. Garrick Ibbotson
4. Cyril Rioli
5. Kyle Reimers
6. Rhys Palmer
7. Nathan Brown
8. Bachar Houli
9. Colin Garland
10. Jack Riewoldt
11. Jarryd Morton
12. Kurt Tippett
13. Ben McKinley
14. Josh Hill
15. Austin Wonaeamirri
16. Kieran Jack

Cotchin looks good. I'd still take Rioli.

This is possibly the most ridiculous statement I have ever read on Bigfooty.
To put it in North Melbourne terms it is like saying you would have prefered John Longmire in your team ahead of Wayne Carey.
Longmire was OK but could not stand in Careys shadow.

The A list
1. Rhys Palmer
2. Trent Cotchin
3. Bachar Houli
4. Garrick Ibbotson
5. Matthew Kreuzer
6. Cyril Rioli

The B list
7. Colin Garland
8. Nathan Brown
9. Ben McKinley
10. Austin Wonaeamirri
11. Kyle Reimers
12. Jack Riewoldt
13. Jarryd Morton
14. Kurt Tippett
15. Josh Hill
16. Kieran Jack

1. Cotchin - I know he hasnt been by far the best this year but I've seen this kid do things only a select few can do. Will be the best by careers end me thinks.

2. Kreuzer - Agreed he is 100 x better at his age than any of the best ruckmen going around today were.

3. Palmer - Stats inflated abit because he was thrust into teams star midfielder role. Needs to improve disposal but he will be a gun (already is hehe)

4. Reimers - Classy as this one with some toughness to boot. Will only get better.

Too hard to judge the rest. Rioli a standout too. Time will tell :)

Clearly why I said to show perspective for those that don't actually watch Fremantle games.

My point being that from what I have seen, Ibbotson is just as 'classy' and skilled as Cotchin, and his numbers even go as far to say he is more effective.
Fair comment on the viewing of freo games. Dont really watch them much over here so hard to rate them.

totally agree with that statement.

so hard to rate who is better, but being valuable to a team covers so much more than just disposals per game.

nothing against some of the mids, but the fact that Kruezer is talked about so much at this stage of his career means a lot. doesnt mean that he will def go on to dominate, but to already be in the ruck doing so well at this age is pretty impressive.

Let me tidy that up for you con -

1. Palmer - Stats underrated a bit because he is tagged as he is already a star midfielder. Will get better when Haselby and Headland come back so look out.:thumbsu:

You know what the problem with statements like the above are

You all go disappearing when proven to be wrong.

I have only ever pumped up three Hawks and I am adding a fourth.

Franklin when he had done nothing. Told everyone he would be the Jordan of the AFL and was laughed at.

Roughead when he had done nothing and what a surprise ...

Rioli and Ellis.

But of course when I bump those threads they will drift off the main page as fast as they were bumped.

You are very knowledgable from what I'ver read over time, so on this do yourself a favour and accept you may have been caught a bit in the Dogs hype this year and not seen enough of Rioli.

Rioli is the most skilled and freakish player I have ever seen wear a Hawks jumper. He is already drifting into the midfield at 18.

When are people going to listen to me :p
