Hawthorn
Other Teams
East Freo, Broncos, Kings
After reading the spirited debate on the "when will the flag go to VIC next ?" thread I decided to throw fuel on the fire and provide a ranking of how I see the VIC clubs, going into the new season. This ranking is you could say how I see the teams finishing on the ladder (not 1 to 10 and all interstate clubs below but their ranking with interstate clubs mingled in between.) I have ranked them according to finishing position last year, players in and out (trading, retirements, long term injuries) and the debateable factor "potential of the playing list" (i.e. young players to step up, old players that are past it etc.)

And I realise that I will receive some good and not so good feedback on this topic but remember this is MY opinion and if you don't agree then feel free to post YOUR opinion, that is why we live in a democratic country (that is a debate for another day).
1. St Kilda
2. Western Bulldogs
3. Melbourne
4. Hawthorn
5. Essendon
6. Geelong
7. Collingwood
8. Richmond
9. Carlton
10. Kangaroos

Of this list I see the top 4 positions making the top 8 this season with 4 interstate clubs. (The same 4 as last year) As for the ranking of these 8 clubs..........well that is a topic for another day

Essendon and the Hawks are a bit high up dont you think?

Why do you rate Essendon so well. They didnt pick up a lot, Llouyd isnt the only answer for them he has to be given the ball for a start.
Geelong and Collingwood would be above these two and Roos are better than Caaaarlllllton!

Here's my take on it:

Melbourne
St.Kilda
Western Bulldogs
Geelong
Richmond
Collingwood
Hawthorn
Essendon
Kangaroos
Carlton

2. Western Bulldogs
3. Richmond
4. Hawthorn
5. Melbourne
6. Geelong
7. Essendon
8. Collingwood
9. Carlton
10. Kangaroos

Watch Richmond this season if they get a full year out of Brown and Richo!!!! Saints and Dogs should be up there but i am not sure about the Dee's. Hawks will be mid table and the rest are going to struggle!

1. Melbourne (2-4)
2. Western Bulldogs (3-6)
3. St.Kilda (4-7)
4. Hawthorn/Richmond (7-10)
6. Geelong (9-11)
7. Collingwood (9-11)
8. Carlton (12-14)
9. Essendon (12-14)
10. Kangaroos (12-16)

The first 4 Victorian teams will make the finals - Richmond and Hawthorn will hit or miss

1. Saints (clearly)
2. Cats (list is still quality)
3. Dees (Good youth, enough experience)
4. Dogs (gameplan may get found out in 2007, but plenty of talent)
5. Roos (good youth, enough experience)
6. Pies (Tarrant may bite if Rocca can't get back to form)
7. Essendon ( Strong forward line. Weak midfield)
8. Tigers (young inconsistent core)
9. Hawks (Traded more experience away leaving weak ruck stocks. Weak middle teir)
10. Carlton (most of their top end talent is too young. If Fev doesn't repeat his 06 could get ugly)

Do you know something the rest of us and bookmakers don't? Roos are equally the longest odds for 2007 and possibly favourites for the spoon!

You seemed to have gotten confused with your assessments of the Tigers and Roos so I thought I would fix it up for you:p

saints (clearly)
Dees (shown they are quality)
Bulldogs (big year for them)
Cats (list has plenty of quality and still young)

bit of a gap

Pies (MM always gets the best out of them)
Tigers (young and improving)
Roos (not as bad as BF makes them out to be)
Hawks (probably a year off but could fire earlier)
Dons ( dont think last season was a once off)
Blues (long way to go but got some talent to build a base from)

Do you know something the rest of us and bookmakers don't? Roos are equally the longest odds for 2007 and possibly favourites for the spoon!

Do you honestly think that TAB odds are an accurate prediction of ladder finish? Odds = Bookmakers covering themselves, the reason why teams with more supporters i.e. COLLINGWOOD will always have shorter odds than other teams who perform similarly.

Maybe you can explain why you think the Doggies gameplan may get found out in 2007.

Because the bulldogs play alot different to most teams, there has to be a weakness to it. Alot of people say its kick high and long, but thats not it. Richmond tried that twice last year and got beaten by a total of about 130 points. But could be something along the lines of stacking the backline, so the dogs can't hit targets in the forward line or just purely running through the lines and taking them on at their own game. I know what he means, and its true, the dogs could be found wanting. Thats up to Eade to have back up plans, which we all know he's working on. Hence the reason the gameplan may be found out.

STK- At full strength most sides will find them hard to match up against.
Dogs- Key players back and with the inclusion of Aker should lift them into the top 4. Talls need to step up (Walsh, Williams, Skipper)
Dees- Should make the 8 but only there to make numbers. Needs a big season from the experianced player such as Robertson, Travis J, Miller.
Cats- If King fires they make the 8 just. If not then another year like 06'.
Tigers- Will improve and could be a smokey for the 8. Expect a big year from Delideo, Brown and Richo.
Hawks- Will do a doggies of 05 and not quite make it. Expect their young group of players to fly.
Pies- Too old, to slow and will be relient on the older brigade. Their young players should do well but wont be consistant enough to charge a finals campaign.
Dons- Very good KPP but thats it. Cant see them making top 8 at all.
Blues- Will improve slightly. If Fev gets injured they are done and dusted for 07'.
Roos- Shame about Smith, would love to have seen how he would go. Cant see them getting out of the bottom 3 unfortunatly. Wells could be a shining light for them though.

Saints (If Kosi stays on the park they'll win the flag)
Doggies (must keep their talls on the park to be a major threat)
Melb (will make up the numbers again)
Geel (Still young, not this year but will be a threat in coming years)
Rich/Hawks (both at the same level)
Ess/Carl (good kids coming through)
Coll (will fall away, but have some quality coming through)
Roos (will get a spoon for their cabinet, they used to have Carey)

If put in groups the general feeling seems to be

Group 1
St Kilda
Western Bulldogs
Melbourne
Geelong

Group 2
Hawthorn
Richmond
Collingwood

Group 3
The Rest (It's too hot)

The way I see it;

Doggies - best of the Vics. Match it with any side this year. Guys coming back from knees will help but don't expect too much from those guys.
Dees - about the same as last year. Can beat anyone on their day.
Saints - injuries from last year will still hurt however might also win flag.
? mark on Hamill, Hayes, Maguire and G Train.
Cats - handbaggers not as bad as last year surely?
Bombers - couple of stars back plus Michael. Should move up.
Tigers - might make the eight this year, or 9th.
Hawks - another year before they move up. Still young but keeping the supporters enthused.
Pies - too slow and on the rebuild. Your time has passed, see you in about 4 years.
Blues - no depth in list. another spoon I hope, if they're still around.
Roos - very very very ordinary list.

Should Make the 8:
Saints - Luck with Injuries and they will be there abouts.
Dogs - Get their Talls back and were close without them
Dees - Solid Group very even spread, can cover for injuries

Will Be Around the Mark:
Pies - List suggests they are not awful but not top flight either.
Tigers - Just missed finals last year similar to the Dogs of 05. Need to follow the Pattern in 07 i.e. Play Finals.
Hawks - Finished the Year with a flourish (4 wins). Need to get more consistent
Cats - List is too good to stay out of the 8 again but early trouble could lead to them doubting if they can do it.

You Never Know:
Roos - Young List with potential but older guys seemed to struggle with the pace. Need to get on a roll early.
Blues - Very Good Young Group, Decent Top End Talent but the inbetweens let them down. Get on a roll and could surge.
Bombers - Hird Lloyd, Fletcher, Lucas, Michael, McPhee & the Johnsons will not just stand back and accept another 06 year. The kids need to back these stars up and get them heading in the right direction. Early season will tell the story.

*These are not in any particular order just where I see the clubs are as 07 rolls around.*

pies
aints

the two best performed victorian sides of 06, both had one ordinary finals game and all of a sudden the pies are rubbish!!?!!

dogs
dees

had one good finals game and then both smashed

hawks
tiggers

teams outside the eight that were on the march

kangas
essendon
geelong
caarlton

were the poor performers in 06

perhaps the hawks/tiggers or cats can push up into the top group
perhaps the pies may slip from being the best performed victorian side

my rankings

saints
dees
dogs
pies
cats
hawks
dons
tiggers
blooose
