Nice to see such a considered and well weighted assessment :thumbsu:

Also nice to see one of our first year draftees already outperforming one of the leagues premier midfielders.

Encouraging stuff...

Clint based on his 2008 value and the GF being his last opportunity to give 100%. Also his Norm Smith potential in the GF before being injured.
And some good reports coming through as he is nursed back to being on the paddock.

I don't think he was giving everyone 10, he was putting up a blank over 10 to see what people would mark them.

Ok. So based on 08-09 and potential for 2010. I'll try to be consistant but I'm sure it will get picked apart.

For example. I'll give Bateman 8.5 for 08, 6 for 09 and maybe an 8 for potential in 2010.

Bateman -7.5/10 Expect more this year when fit
Burgoyne -8/10 Elite when fit but did'nt see much in 09
Duryea -?/10 Don't know
Ellis -7/10 Better than avg and tough with good skills
Hodge -8.5/10 When fit and playing midfield only could be 10
Lewis -7.5/10 Solid work horse who looks fit and will improve
Mitchell -9/10 Kick a goal a game and could be a 10 like Hodge
Muston -3/10 1 good game so far. Give him time
Rioli -8.5/10 Wow, as a mid he could be as good as GA. Not yet though
Savage -3/10 Give him time
Sewell -8.5/10 See Mitchell. No Sewell no win, he's that important
Shiels -5/10 Still learning but potential there
Suckling -5/10 As above
Tuck -3/10 Nothing yet, maybe injured?
Young -7.5/10 Great on the wing. Injury free could be close to 9

I also think that only 9 of those can fit into our best 22.

Bateman 8/10
Burgoyne 8/10 (Though I'd expect at least a 9 next year if he can have a full pre-season)
Duryea ?/10
Ellis 7.5/10
Hodge 9.5/10
Lewis 8/10
Mitchell 8.5/10
Muston 3.5/10
Rioli 8/10
Savage 4/10
Sewell 8.5/10
Shiels 6/10
Suckling 5/10
Tuck 5/10
Young 7/10

Bateman 8/10 - Potentially can be 9 (and was in 2008). I think he needs to get back there for us to be realistic contenders.
Burgoyne 8/10 - I rate this guy highly, but given he is coming back from surgery would only be able to give 8.
Duryea -/10 - Not able to comment.
Ellis 7/10 - I think Ellis has the potential to be a nine, but not this year. I love his awareness, but still needs a pre-season or two to get there.
Hodge 9/10 - One of our true game-breakers. The only reason I can't give him ten is that I am not sure of his capacity to break a tag and I don't think his endurance is great enough for him to influence a full game (the influence he has in a quarter is pretty amazing though:D)
Lewis 7.5/10 - I love the Chief, but sometimes get frustrated with his kicking. Sometimes he is great, other times not so sure.
Mitchell 9/10 - Best clearance player in the league. Only slight downmarking is he is limited to that role only really.
Muston 4/10 - This is based on last year. I think he can and hopefully will improve. Let's hope he gets confidence and turns into the gun we all hoped he would be.
Rioli 9/10 - I think Rioli is our best player! If he can build up his endurance then he will be the ultimate midfielder (with useful rests in the forward line).
Savage 6/10 - still early, but showed great potential at the end of last year. Needs to get stronger and then can be a handy contributor.
Sewell 9/10 - our heart. This is the guy who when he is stopped, so is our team! Love him.
Shiels 7/10 - already shown he can be a more than handy contributor. Will be right up there in a couple of years.
Suckling 5/10 - not sure of his endurance for midfield.
Tuck 6/10 - I rate Tucky for his effort. I am not sure he will get the opportunities. I just hope his body allows him to get a good run of games so he can show us how good he is.
Young 7.5/10 - I don't rate Youngy as high as Mr Shadforth (but then who does?;)). I still think his run and long-kicking is vital to our game and really handy for our forwards. Only real question mark is coming back from injury

Can I also suggest the list should include Ladson (7.5/10), as he will do stints through the midfield and Williams (I think??), although I can't rate him either as I have no idea of his potential.

Good post Bosk!:thumbsu:

Whilst Hodge is my favourite player, how people can rate him as a better midfielder than Mitchell is crazy. Am not doubting he will take an extra step this year, but week in week out Mitchell gets the most touches in the midfield, uses it really well, has the closest tag and leads from the front. To date, Hodge has struggled against a tag and played a lot of his footy off half back.

For mine:

Mitchell 9/10
Sewell 8/10
Bateman 7.5/10
Hodge 7/10
Lewis 7/10
Young 7/10
Shiels 6.5/10
Ladson 6.5/10
Ellis 6.5/10
Tuck 5.5/10
Moss 5/10
Stokes 4/10
Muston 3/10
Savage 3/10
Suckling - hardly played midfield
Rioli - hardly played midfield but could be 9+ when he does
Burgoyne - hasn't played a game for us although expect 7+
Duryea - hasn't played a game?

I think the most important thing to note is the room for improvement or potential to improve. Of our mids in terms of consistancy over the last 3 seasons Mitchell, Sewell and Bateman rate the highest. There finishes in the B&F reflect this.

- If Hodge is used as a weapon instead of a bandaid he will easily join that list.
- Burgoyne will join that list if he plays most games this year.
- Lewis and Rioli look like making the step up this year.

That's 7 potential 9 out of 10 players. Scary Thought.

- Ellis is probably a year off still, and Shiels isn't far behind him.

The rest arn't in our top 22.

- Suckling is a good player but he's spot is on the bench or back flank ATM.
- If Clinton Young can get back to 2008 form he's right up there at the top IMO.

outsider point of view for the last few seasons

Bateman -7.5/10 slips under the radar fom an opposition perspective, seems loved by the dawks supporters
Burgoyne -7.5/10 Inconsistant, but when on he's super, will all depend on that knee
Ellis -7/10 looks the goods but still not sold
Hodge -8.5/10 down last year after a cracking 08 if fit will tear it up
Lewis -7/10 has dropped 7 kegs, looks fit, love the anger, will never be a star
Mitchell -9/10 the extractor, wold like to see him thrown in the guts again after a bit of time off hbf last year
Muston -4/10 needs time, has shown good signs
Rioli -7.8/10 Excitement factor & skill, few more years in the game wil see him kill it
Savage -NFI
Sewell -9/10 tough as nails, bulldog, integral, most important mid
Shiels -dont know but looked great in first nab game
Suckling -Don't know
Tuck -3.5/10 Started ok in rookie year, guessing will take time
Young -7/10 good wingman, penetrating kick, a better team when he's playing

Bateman 7/10
Burgoyne 7.5/10

I agree with this.

i did mine as garry ablett would be an 9/10 and 10/10 would be better then him at the moment. since he is the best player i dont have anyone higher.

Hodge 9/10 one of the games top players.
Mitchell 8/10 clerence king
Sewell 8/10 tough strong mid that can tag or be taged
Burgoyne 7/10 hasent proved him self at hawthorn.could be 8-9/10 in best form easy.
Lewis 7/10 an a-grade mid
Bateman 7/10 very good player
Rioli 6.5/10 all class could be any thing.
Young 6/10 at his best could be a norm smith. can he get back to it
Ellis 5/10 this year he could elovate him self to an a-grade. 7=a-grade
Muston 4/10 just needs to cement his spot to go to the next level.
Shiels 4/10 just needs to cement his spot to go to the next level
Tuck 4/10 just needs to cement his spot to go to the next level.
Savage 3/10 he could be a player. just needs to put in the work
Suckling 3/10 havent seen much of him but looks good can play anywere
Duryea 2/10 havent seen him play but still young. 2/development

key-
10/10 freak best playter to ever play the game

Shiels 5/10
Suckling 1/10
Tuck 2/10

Bateman -8/10 one of the great running midfielders of the AFL. If he used the ball better would be in the upper elite class.
Burgoyne -8.5/10 super talent. Can hurt you with a dozen possessions when other midfielders need 30.
Duryea -1/10 kid, haven't seen much of him. Needs to develop.
Ellis -6/10 above average but needs to take another step in hs career. Still lacks the engine or body to play in the midfield full time.
Hodge -9.5/10 one of the game's true superstars. Look out now that he has trimmed down and can spend more time in the guts.
Lewis -8/10 underrtaed, tough and a fine AFL footballer. Does a lot of the hard stuff that doesn't find the stats sheet.
Mitchell -9/10 elite in and under player. The best handball in AFL football. The modern day Greg Williams. Kicking and legspeed his major drawbacks.
Muston -5/10 still developing. Potentially a lethal wingman but is still a year away. Expecting improvement this season.
Rioli -9.5/10 probably a freak. Could be the greatest midfielder we have ever seen by the time he is done.
Savage -4/10 promising but needs time.
Sewell -8.5/10 gun who can tag as well as win his own football. Perfect second stoppage player.
Shiels -5/10 looks like he will be very good. Still developing but still very young.
Suckling -3/10 depth player, that is all.
Tuck -4/10 not convinced he is a good as is being lauded. Wins plenty of the ball and has some smarts but can butcher the pill with the best of them.
Young -6/10 good quality wingman who needs to be fit to be a factor.

Hodge, Lewis, Sammy and Sewell are all A graders but they are all one paced.

Tucky can slot in if needed.

Youngy and Changa are A graders. Sucker may be, Musto depth player.

X is better down back.

Cyril and Burgers are desperately needed as they add genuine zip.

Bateman, yes will concede that he is very nearly A Grade.

Youngy, B Grade at best. Capable of playing some great football but he is not elite.

Suckling, well can I at least ask if you were smoking crack when you made that assessment? He's been on the list for what, 3 years and isn't even a fringe midfielder for us. A reasonable NAB Cup game against witches hats doesn't qualify him as an A Grade midfielder or even the consideration that he "may be."

Alot of wishful thinking in this forumn.

Bateman 6.5/10
Burgoyne 7.5/10
