The deciding factors of this game:

The Defence:The Lions defending at the start of the season had been woeful, easy goals were let in, players were not zoning or playing to their positions and opposition was receiving free runs into goals almost every week; notably against the Suns. However, as of the past two weeks this was shut down, the Eagles were the first team to have a harder run to victory, and then a week later the young Lions knocked off the Essendon Bombers, both of these close games saw the Lions defense repeatedly block goals, this is essential to winning this game.

The Pies attack has a few goal sneaks, such as Jamie Elliot, Sam Dwyer and last but not least Travis Cloke. I suspect the only trouble player there will be Travis Cloke and Sam Dwyer who was the deciding factor against Geelong, racking up 27 disposals and kicking 3 goals. Hopefully Golby will return this week or Maguire will shut Cloke out of the game, and the rest of the inexperienced Lions defence can care for the other forwards.
Against Carlton the Lions defense was majorly broken down in the first quarter, the Blues were able to surge to a huge lead before the defence got it under control, however the score line flattered us as the Blues missed chance after chance in front of goal, for any chance of winning this game the defence will need to be on their toes from the opening bounce.

The Midfield: The Pies midfield is definitely one of their strong points. It is clearance galore generally, however with a number of their star midfielder's out, such as Daisy Thomas and Beams, this has nullified some of their midfield strength.

However, the Lions will be under siege as well in the midfield this week, with players such as Beams and Daniel Rich missing from the line up, some of the less experienced players are going to have to stand up. I suspect this will be where the game is won or lost for either team, the question is can Moloney, Zorko, Rockliff, and the rest of the Lions midfielders combat the attack of Dane Swan, Pendlebury, Luke Ball and the rest of the Pies midfield. Only time will tell.

Against Carlton the midfield worked quite well when it was on song, and the 'Berger could have been the issue for losing the game in the last quarter when he left the field with an injured finger, hopefully he will return to ruck this weekend.

The Forwards: The Brisbane Lions forward line finally came together against the Bombers, brilliant tap downs, brilliant roving, Jonathan Brown leading further down the field, everything fell into play perfectly, and it was the part of the reason that the game was goal for goal all day. If the Brisbane Lions can replicate this against the Pies then the game will be won by the Lions no doubt.

The main Collingwood defenders that the Lions will have to watch out for will be Harry O' Brian, who is in match winning and AA form. He was amazing against the Geelong Cats, and I suspect he will rip whoever he plays on a new one. Nick Maxwell is the other main Pies defender to watch out for, however I believe the Lions smaller forwards will run amuck this Friday night.

Against Carlton the Lions forward line was extremely inefficient, missing sitters in front of goal is not the way to win a game, and it showed on the weekend when we kicked 1.7 in the second quarter, if two of those shots were goals we would have won.

The Final Conclusion:With the traditional premiership guernsey and Lion bearing on their chests I suspect that the Lions will win this game for the history books, and also to further enhance the chances of the guernsey reuniting with the club for good. I will guess it will be the Lions to the tune of 9 points. GO LIONS!

Great preview, as much as it was fantastic to beat the Bombers, there is nothing better than beating the Pies. Let's hope Leuy is ok and JB doesn't get into trouble with the MRP as we will need both firing. Looking forward to Friday and Lions up by a point.

Injuries and suspensions have seriously cruelled what would otherwise have been a gilt edged opportunity to knock off the Pies on a Friday night.

Kinda gutting to be honest. A win would have given the classic jumper unstoppable momentum.

Enthusiasm for Friday is seriously dented.

Great preview Rendered Unsafe, really echoes the thoughts of a Lions fan right now.

The way I look at it, Leuenberger's touch and go for this week.

This Friday, it's going to be a glimpse into the future. A future where Brown isn't going to be the main forward, and we're going to have to look for other options to win the game. Merrett out is a huge loss too, but Clarke coming in should somewhat make up for it. I suspect he'll go to Cloke. Big task, but he can pull it off.

Could we see Karnezis come in? Or will the Lions choose the running half-forward in Paparone who offers flexibility and can run all day. Just when I thought we saw the fastest side play last week, this week will be even faster. Actually looking forward to the game, it's going to be interesting how we structure up forward and the quality of the ball going in.

Also, Jolly getting off for pretty much the same action is a joke.

I am having much the same dread going into this match as I did before the Sydney game.

All of our "outs", coming off a 6 day break, a huge let down emotionally, Collingwood looking to improve after a disappointing effort.....I just don't see where a win is going to come from.

Maybe if Leuey comes good then I'll regain a bit of confidence but right now it just seems like everything is against us.

Also, Jolly getting off for pretty much the same action is a joke.
On that topic, I found this interesting:

So a free kick was given for high contact during the game, but it wasn't forceful enough for a suspension - never mind it knocked him off his feet. Watching the replay on Brown, he's come over the left shoulder, fist hit the right chest of Jamison - but Jamison gets up and holds his left jaw.
Wasn't a free kick in the game, but that's forceful contact. Yeah, this system makes total sense.

Isn't Patfull a better matchup for Cloke? Has done the job well before.

Cloke's role seems to have changed in recent years from being that hard leading CHF getting his touches up towards the wing to being a genuine, stay at home power forward. I don't think Patfull is a great matchup for that type of player.

Having said that, Joel obviously had his colours lowered last week and giving him first crack at the bloke who I think is the best forward in the game might be a good show of confidence.

Shocked that Browny was done for intentional, he is better than that if he really meant it Jamison wouldn't have got up. The Jolly non decision is unbelievable, that's two weeks in a row. Paparone to play a blinder, let's get our fastest and most mobile side out there and give it a crack.

Interestingly they graded his action as intentional.

I would think they may well challenge that.

Would he be risking 2 weeks if he challenges?

Also, anyone thought we could see big Sam Michael take Brown's spot in the forward line with Clarke to slot back into defence? Would be nice to see him in his natural habitat.
