Tigers :richmond: v Dons :essendon: : Dreamtime at the….. Optus?

Saturday 5th of June, 7:40pm AEST

Overview:
This will be the second year in a row the Dreamtime game is away from the G, after the Tigers got up by 12 points (literally 12 behinds) 10.13-73 to 10.1-61. Another noteworthy statistic in this game was that the Tigers had 1 more free kicks than Essendon, meaning that this week the Dons will likely get 10+ more than us. Shai Bolton came away with the Yiooken Award for BOG with 29 disposals and a goal to his name. The Tigers have won the last 6 Dreamtime clashes.

Form :
Going into this game the Tigers sit 8th on the ladder with Ninthdon sitting in Ninth (haaaa), the Dons are in great form and are truly bringing the “searing” pressure week in, week out. Winners of 3 on the trot, the most impressive of which came last week against the weagles over at Optus. Despite surrendering a 29 point lead, they managed to claw their way back and completely run over them in the last qtr. However, the Eagles did get 2 in game injuries to very important players which would have most definitely played a part. Regardless, it was an impressive win for the Dons with Parish and Merrett leading the way again in the midfield.

For the Tigers, we had a solid win against a much improved Crows. Challenged early in the game, we managed to steady the ship in the middle two quarters before looking a bit wobbly and then steadying again. Its been a bit of a theme for the Tigers this year, as many on this great forum have called it we are a bit “Jekyll and Hyde”. However, I do expect a more rounded performance this week as we draw closer to being full strength with the (hopefully) return of Shedda. We will still be missing key players in Lynch, Lambo and Soldo but it’s probably the closest weve been to a full team since the early rounds.

Game Styles :
Both teams share similar game styles (who woulda thunk it) after the defections of Caracella and Rutten, with the dons relying on their searing pressure to keep the ball locked in their front half. This has been the Tigers bread and butter, however there has been a drop off this year with seemingly more of our attacks launched off the half back line. Essendon has a new look backline with former forwards in Laverde and Stewart holding down the key posts along with Francis, their backline as a whole has been in great form of late intercepting a lot of what comes their way.

Both midfields have speed and ball winning ability, with Parish and Merrett the Dons have a nice mix of inside and outside. Similarly the Tigers with Prestia, Cotchin and Bolton boast an impressive mix of X-factor and hardness. The midfield battle will be a key factor in the outcome of this game, as both teams have the ability to put score on the board each time the ball goes inside their 50.

Key stats across both teams are very even, with the Tigers generating 54 inside 50’s a game to Essendon’s 53 a game. Both teams generate 26 scoring shots a game giving them 48% and 49% efficiency going inside 50, respectively.

Key Match-ups :

Dion Dion Prestia v Darcy Parish

Neon Dion returned last week after pinging his hammy earlier in the year and then his calf just before he was due to return, and boy did we miss him. He brings us much needed clearance and ball winning ability, but it’s his work rate off the ball which we missed so dearly with his two way gut running. Darcy Parish on the other hand has benefited from the injury to Dylan Shiel, as he has been thrust into a key midfield role and flourished. Quelling his influence will go a long way to a Tigers victory.

Dylan Grimes v Jake Stringer
This wont necessarily be the match up that the Tigers end up going for, but whether its Grimes or Broad (or someone else) they will need to have their wits about them as there is only ONE thing that Jake likes more than girls still in high-school and that is kicking snags. He always seems to bob up in key moments and kick big goals, so keeping him out of this one will help us claim the W.

CCJ v James Stewart

The Zombie made his debut in 2019 against Essendon, and he had an outstanding 2nd game at AFL level last week booting 4 goals and taking 4 contested grabs. After a quiet first quarter he decided to start clunking them and then managed to finish off his work with some fantastic goal kicking. Since his return, Stewart has held down the key defender spot admirably and I expect him to go to CCJ this week as he matches him nicely for height. If we can give CCJ some good service I expect him to show out again, and those contract $’s will keep rising.

Teams:

I expect the Dons will think about going in unchanged, with their only potential change being the possible return of Sam Draper.

For the Tigers there is optimism that Shedda will be good to go, with Pickett also available after serving his (bullshit) suspension. If it were up to me id go Shedda and Pickett in, with Hugo and George going out.

Outcome:

After a close first half with some missed opportunites I expect the tigers to pull away later in the game, eventually taking it by around 4 goals.

Bummers lost to an undermanned GWS by 2 points

Beat a middle of the road team, Freo, by a kick

Beat cellar dwellers norf by a lot

Beat the weegurls that also lost to GWS

They don't sound as intimidating or as good as everyone is making them out to be
Didnt Eagles get a few mid game injuries?
