Review Rd 19 Review - Freo Dont Lose Against Richmond

Ah sounds like our 2012-15 finals side under coach Ross Lyon lol.

Funny thing is.....

Freos forwards line right now is different to that 2012-15 forward line.

Saying that, I would rather have freos current forward line "weakness" than our 2012-5 side.

At least freos current forward line has 2 solid marking talk forwards in Lobb and Taberner. Walters is old but a fully fit squad, we got a fair few smalls that can kick goals in Switkowski, Frederick and Schulz and even Coyler
They CAN but how often do they ?

Can someone tell me a team that handles pressure well. Not many do so I thought we did ok considering.

Richmond pressure and tackling was elite.

If there was one moment we would love back is tabs set shot in the 3rd qtr with a 3m run up not making the distance. After taking so long to get a contested mark inside 50 it was a lazy run up.
Wouldnt mind Mooses sprained hoof kick straight to Bolton back either.

Decided to make a comeback here after not posting for a while - my thoughts on tonight’s effort:
Snuffaluphagus may not believe this but I’ve jumped right off the delist Bailey Banfield club. 😂 He’s played very solid stuff in recent weeks and you could argue right now is the only forward on the list playing career best footy. He’s become very very good at those left foot around the corner snaps. Even though playing on in the first quarter after the Brayshaw tackle was poor footy IQ. Saying that Brayshaw probably would have missed anyway 😩
  • there is an obvious lack of class in the forward part of the ground. You just don’t win flags with blunt forward lines. There is no natural goal scorer. Not one. Will Luke Jackson fix that? Doubtful. A lot riding into he shoulders of Amiss and Treacy into the future.
  • young was superb. Reads the game so well to take those intercept marks. Big tick with pick 7, three years in.
  • tabs got a tough night from an inform Tarrant.
  • Darcy needs a kick in the ass. He’s been living off reputation for a good few weeks now. Still a very inconsistent ruckman. To win any finals Darcy needs to be in the coaches votes almost.
  • is Frederick a little bit nervous when bodies are flying in?? Great smother on Balta indeed, but jeez that was a feeble contest against Pickett with ten seconds left. Very very lucky boy that Cumberland played on.
  • Pearce should be banned from kicking! That Clanger in the first half for the Bolton goal was almost comical. And where exactly was he kicking it anyway? Looked like he was taking on the miracle kick in the corridor, like WTF Alex?
  • Wilson in for Walker probably makes sense next game.
  • Colyer needs to play ahead of Henry IMO. While Liam was serviceable with ball in hand, he’s a liability in terms of defensive pressure. Colyer was decent when he came on and looked like he had a point to prove.
  • Acres, I’ve never really fully bought into the hype this year. Yes he had some decent games early on. But you can’t turn in two poor games after demanding a better and longer deal from the club. He was close enough to delist material at the beginning of this season. I’d grab the deal on the table if I was him before any more dodgy performances.
  • Logue needs to be signed ASAP. If this club lets Logue go I will vomit. Just pay the man what he’s worth for Christ’s sake (something around $500-600k per annum in my opinion). Young versatile KPP aged 24 like him are rare. Plenty of other dispensable players like Tucker, Blakely, Acres, Wilson etc that can be cleared out ahead of Logue if $$ are tight.

It’s not his fault our midfield think he’s 194cm either. The ball has to be in front of him or he needs to snag one below the feet of the talls. We too often expect him to take a contested mark

Walters is ineffectual when the ball hits the deck these days too. He's too small and he's lost his zip and evasiveness. He inevitably just gets bulldozed in the tackle.

It was very frustrating to not get the four points, however reflecting on the full match, we were probably lucky to come away with two points.

I thought Young, Clark, Aish and Mundy were very good.

I liked Walker today - he took the game on which was pleasing.

Henry had some nice moments in the first half. He's very clean, makes great decisions and has good skills. He tends to go missing when the heat is on, but he's very young and the more he's exposed to big matches, the better he'll get. I prefer Henry in the team over Colyer. Yes, Colyer did some nice things when he came on, however he should have had more awareness on the wing in the fourth, and nail that basic hand pass to Mundy near the end (that could have been the difference).

Chapman won some critical 50/50s against Bolton which was good to see. Great composure in big moments.

Logue was a bit rusty up front. He's got to nail his opportunities from a set shot, and he should of stuck a few crucial marks.

I'm not worried about Walters. Yes he's not as good as prime years, but he's still good for a goal or two, and he's providing defensive pressure and experience for the young lads.

I am however worried about Tabs and Darcy. Tabs doesn't provide anything if he doesn't mark the ball or get a free kick. He no longer leads up the ground and provide an outlet so I'm not sure what he gives to the team if he's not kicking goals. At least Treacy provides defensive pressure and can act as a second ruck (plus we're getting experience into our youth).

The same with Darcy. His movement is limited when the ball hits the deck, and if he's not giving us good first use, or taking marks, I think I'd prefer Meek.

A slightly frustrating result but Richmond threw the kitchen sink at us and most of the team stood up. We were never going to win the premiership this year, however there are great signs for the future, and I hope we're well placed to play in at least 2 finals matches.

Lacked a bit of class over the 22. Had plenty of it, won enough ball, generated enough inside 50, backline held up well despite Ryan being a bit down and Pearce making a handful of clangers, but at the end it was our usual problem of not enough class up forward. We simply don't have a top 4 forwardline.

Pearce makes a handful of silly errors each game. He has been doing it all year and when we lose or it is close it is more noticeable.

Walters is ineffectual when the ball hits the deck these days too. He's too small and he's lost his zip and evasiveness. He inevitably just gets bulldozed in the tackle.

Walters has some good moments in games but tonight for most of the game he was well below average. He has lost his evasive skill and I think he knows it which makes him snatch at the ball. He was so clean, now he is far less so. Still has moments like his goal, but they are few and far between.

Caleb got bullied a bit by Prestia today. One example was at the 2:10 mark of the third. Prestia moves him metres from the contest with ease and runs away with the clearance. Something for him to aim at.

We have been in declining form since the Gold Coast and Collingwood games. Couple of big weeks ahead. Melbourne will hand us a beating if we can't find some dare with our ball movement. Lobb back is a must.

I would like to see Walker on the wing. There he can use his natural explosive pace better a bit like the young stephen hill. Whilst he can take on a fast opposition forward I feel with ball in hand he often hesitant under pressure and gets caught.

The forwards need to be proactive and/or exaggerate contact. The amount of times Tabs was wrapped around just trying to go for a mark is so illegal yet Tabs just gets on with it. He’s probably used to the blatant cheating that he just doesn’t bother
Logue was going up for marks with one arm just being held.

Yet Cox even taps McKay every time we play Carlton, it’s a free kick. Tall forwards need to play act to get umpires’ attention.

Blah blah

We’re better with Logue forward.

We’re better without Fyfe.

We’re better when we play on.
All having Lobb, another tall target. Got it so wrong tonight. No genuine second ruckman. What you said above all works IF there’s a second tall to allow Logue to be spared.

Walters have loss that prep, extra step he gains on his defenders once he gets the ball. He never has been fast however smart in getting separation.
Now he just goes into tackles and tries to handball it out. Got caught numerous times holding the ball doing this. He’s slow now. He can be useful if Switter, Schulz and Colyer were in helping with the pressure.

Great game.

That was stressful for me to watch, and playing in it would have been like a final for our group.

We have another final-like match next week.

I’m loving this season. The on-field shortcomings are there, but so are the clear signs of major progress we have made as well as the significant improvement still to come.

Disappointing game. Horrid forward entries killed us. That said Richmonds defense was first rate last night. Gave up virtually no cheap goals.

Tabs was horrid. Poor leading. Poor bodywork. Failed to anticipate body contact and worked away from the ball too easily.

Logue is Mr Almost. Almost marks it so many times. Almost a great player.

Young was immense but often had nothing to kick to going forward. If we are looking for a difference making kid who can kick goals I reckon this kid is it. We need. Him getting the ball in the forward half and having several shots a game. He has Bontempelli ability. Our midfield is not damaging enough on the scoreboard.

Perhaps it should be Mundy that gets put down Forward in his later years starting now to add some class. Our most accurate kick for goal. Great contested player. Tall. Walters is done.

Pearce had a first quarter shocker.

To be honest (and I don't want to be disrespectful to Tigers fans), but I felt Richmond were throwing their full finals level effort and intensity at the game last night, so taken in that context, I think our team could have taken a lot out of that experience.

Young had a great game, probably his best of his career.

We have a number of players coming back from significant time off in Taberner, Chapman and Acres, and to a degree (whilst they weren't terrible) we are carrying them a bit. Having said that, I think it is the right strategy; because both are ramping up from the previous games, and we are better off with them come finals time. If Switowski becomes available I wonder if we similarly semi-carry him?

The forward line had a quiet night but a large number of the entries were also fairly atrocious. Not withstanding as Taylor said our ineffectiveness to stop the drop from the contest being waltzed out of forward line, I can't bet help think that Meek in the team would have added a bit, not in the least because it would have allowed Logue to continue to present as an option, rather than filling a backup ruck role. Meek's form in the WAFL of recent weeks has been really top notch, and he has been taking good athletic marks in the forward line, so I just think this makes sense.

I said exactly the same
The Soldo in the back on Cox was blatant

We need to perfect the “Art of Darling “
