Local paper a bit stiff in saying Sunbury poached Baker from Lancefield.

Also a write up about James fronting the tribunal. Did the tribunal sit last night or tonight?
Little Johnny ..... Sunbury should'nt expect him to hang around ALL season, he had trouble staying committed to one girl. do'nt know why his footy would be any diff. have a look at the clearances list. He will never stop looking for greener pastures ........ do'nt believe the poaching thing, he probably got scared of commitment, or maybe the lights are'nt bright enough up at Lancefield.

Saw a some interesting footy on the weekend..

Caught the first half of the Riddell/Broadford contest, the young Broadford side has really come a long way in the first half of the year so far, they were fantastic in the opening quarter, but missed crucial opportunities to put on scoreboard pressure, of their 5 behinds, 4 were goals they really should have kicked, especially if you want to pressure a side like Riddell, the second quarter went all the Bombers way though, Pete Robertson was a class above and Mick Allen and Matt Baird found touch as the game went on. Broadford used the ball well around the ground but just lacked class going inside 50 which Riddell had in spades.

Then travelled over to check out the 2nd half of Melton Centrals Vs Sunbury Kangaroos. The Roos well and truly had the ascendency at half time but an excellent 3rd quarter from Centrals had them right back in the game. Kane Bullen has to be one of the best captains in the competition, he really does lead from the front, while Jono O'Brien continues to impress, the downside for Centrals would have been the behaviour of one of the forwards, when you have a side building like Greeny is trying to do, that sort of attitude can only set you back, props have to go to the big fella that came onto the ground in the third quarter to replace him and had an impact by just working hard and providing a target, rather than complaining about where the ball was going.
The last quarter was a real arm wrestle early, Centrals got within 9 points with all the momentum before the Kangas threw the Big Fish forward, a goal almost immediately threw the game back the Kangas way, followed by a goal to Meacham. A big positive for the Kangas has to be the form of young Tie Cuffe, the last two games I have seen from him have just been super efforts, text book roving. While Darragh McGovern is a star...

Big week of games this week heading into the break!!!

Believe that Jamesy was found guilty on 2 counts, one of misconduct for which he received 12 weeks and one of striking which he received 6 weeks, with the two charges to be served concurrently...(For some, that means at the same time :D)

I for one, am sad to see the big fella go, it is disappointing that his footy career had to end in this way, all the best Jamesy!!!

We are gonna see less and less ex-AFL stars in local footy with the way they get treated from the sidelines and on the field. Yeah some don't behave all that well but how much can any one bloke take. I'm not sticking up for James, don't know him from a bar of soap.

Several players have come out publicly and said they wont continue with local footy after being set upon themselves or seeing how other retirees are heckled. It's a shame that some blokes can't give back to their local/junior club or continue to play any form of the game once retired from the big league.

We all love to have them out our clubs, they bring people through gates and a wealth of knowledge and experience to the existing playing group. On the other side of the coin we hurl abuse we would not wont our mother's to hear, far more intrusively than that we would shout at local Joe Blow at Full Forward. Yet we expect to get away with it cause these people are high profile and can't do anything without it getting in the paper or them getting suspended. I sometimes wonder if people would say the same thing if they ran into these blokes in the street, I highly doubt it.

In my opinion (and that's all it is) interchange gates need to be away from clubrooms, behind the goals needs to be cordoned off, committee members need to walk the fence and kick out troublemakers and most importantly we all need to grow up a little and set a better example for not just the kids around the club but everyone involved.

I agree with you. I don't know Aaron James and haven't even seen him play but I think that it is very sad that it has all ended up this way. Sure there have been things done in his past that have been poor but bloody hell we should all want the best possible players running around in our leagues not trying to have them kicked out of them

Good luck to him with whatever he does now

RDFL: Aaron James De-Registered After 18-game Ban

story said:
Aaron James has played his last game of football after receiving an 18-game suspension from the Riddell District Football League tribunal and being de-registered as a result.
The journeyman full-forward was handed two separate penalties of 12 and six games respectively on Tuesday night for charges of misconduct and striking, both involving a spectator.

One of the best posts ive read on the RDFL forum in the last 2/3 yrs

also ill note that playing in the same as Aaron last year, the amount of absoulute rubbish that he has to put up with week in week out is not what the normal player has too, and in the end the big fella is human! we all lose our tempers most days so its not suprising that the big fella would get emotional and fired up! being a competitive by nature also fuels the bloke so of course hes gonna get his back up n stick up for himself, from what ive seen on every occasion that aaron has got in to trouble in the RDFL it is against Diggers Rest, and the diggers crowd has been disgusting, especially in the final over at kilmore a few yrs ago, myself and about 15 other kilmore players witnessed the crowd and they were a disgrace! i feel for the big man because when it comes down it, aaron is good for the young players around the clubs he has played at, everyone walks taller when you know you have a player of that calibre standing up at full foward! all the best to jamesy after footy

Gary Moorcroft copped plenty over the fence playing for Romsey, the only difference is he chose to ignore it.

At last, someone brings a bit of sense to the debate. I have seen James in two different leagues. Good to watch at this level. Big, strong, great mark, fantastic kick. Great goal scoring record, but not too many Prelmierships.
Clearly demonstrates that teams win, not individuals. Not a shining light to be admired by young players. You do not set an example by walking off at the end of a game without acknowledging the contest and your opponents
Pity really. A wasted talent, who thinks it is ok to resolve his discomfort with physical violence. No room for that in the real world.

A real shame to see Aaron out of football forever. I have known Aaron since primary school . The simple fact is you don't react to the crowd no matter what is said . Anyone who does'nt get that your kidding yourself!!!

All the best in his future endevours...

Nah not too many premierships mate just 4 of them!

I would suggest that 4 premierships at Senior level is a pretty good result for any footballer... :thumbsu:

No.. The former assistant coach that was quoted in the article moved on a couple of weeks ago.

Dean Helmers still coaches the Roos.

Nic Dyer did the media rounds yesterday.

My view is that James did the wrong thing and was rightfully punished.

I don't agree with the treatment he copped from spectators, but that's not his responsibility. The Kangaroos and other clubs before that should have ensured that spectators who did abuse their star forward were moved on. Even if you had to employ two security guards for a couple of matches to make a point, its far better than losing your gun full-forward when you look like heading towards a premiership.

I'm sure Deano with his boxing connections could have sourced a couple of "heavies" to escort anyone making untoward comments towards his players out of Boardman Reserve.

Matt, you really have no clue.

its a shame James is not playing football anymore,he was a great site at his best
but surely he copped a lot more abuse at the MCG & other afl grounds. he also didnt mind handing out the abuse

We can continue to go on and on about the James issue but what's done can't be undone so let's move on. Big round of footy this weekend.

I see Leigh McInerney's clearance to Romsey has been denied and a new one is yet be lodged. Surely they'll look to push one through over night.

Looking forward to the Romsey v Diggers and Sunbury v Cats games this weekend. Sure to be ripping contests. A few tough picks for the tipsters this round.

Looking forward to IMS' run down before and after the games this week.

RDFL Season Round 7

Massive week of games this week in the RDFL.... :thumbsu:

Woodend/Hesket Vs Kilmore
Who could forget the final round of last year at Woodend, the Hawks, out of the finals race and looking to finish on a high, defeated Kilmore in the dying minutes to not only notch up the win, but send Kilmore tumbling from the top 6 and out of the finals.
That result alone should make for an excellent game at Gilbert Gordon. The Hawks are always a tougher proposition at home and while it seems that last weeks loss has put them out of the race for 6th spot, they are sure to be pumped for a game they would give themselves every chance in. The most impressive thing for the Hawks is the young kids that have pushed into the senior side, youth can always add a spark and these kids are impressive players.
The Blues are not to be outdone though and have plenty of impressive youngsters in their own right, with last weeks win they have put themselves back in the race for 6th spot, no doubt, the Gordon Brothers have had an impact on the line up and added new spark to Shane Jacobs.
Will this week see the Blues stake their claim on that elusive 6th spot on the RDFL ladder, or will it be the Hawks stomping on their finals dreams again?
Tip: Kilmore by 12 points.

Romsey Vs Diggers Rest
Tip: Romsey to win

Rockbank Vs Lancefield
The Rams have been one of the talking points in recent weeks with 3 huge performances against highly rated opponents. Last week they came from a long way down against Diggers to go down by a narrow margin. Much has depended on the midfield winning first use of the football and with a new structure they have given many sides a run for their money. Unfortunately for the Rams it looks as though they may lose young gun Leigh Sobotnicki for this weeks games to the TAC, so good luck to Leigh.
The Tigers are having a very tough year, but they do have some very good youngsters coming into the side from the 18's. They pushed Kilmore right to the last quarter last week which has to be a positive for the young Tigers.
Tip: Rockbank by 40 points

Wallan Vs Riddell
The Magpies were able to hold off the Hawks in a tight game last week and head into this game with confidence. Dave Cornish is in good form as is Shannon Galea. This is a tough game for the Magpies, but at home, will be confident of giving the Bombers a shake.
The Bombers are just coming together nicely. Baird and Mick Allen returned last week and with Grant Puxley and Brian Ruffell not too far away, they are close to putting their best side on the park (minus Matt Sammut). The Bombers are still a classy outfit and will be looking to position themselves for a shot at the top 3.
Tip: Riddell by 28 points

Broadford Vs Melton Centrals
This could be classified as one of the match of the round candidates.
Of what I saw in the first half on the weekend, the Broadford side is improving every week. Especially solid around the clearances and ball movement around the ground, they let themselves down though with the way they went inside 50 and poor kicking at goal. Duggan and Coomans were great around the middle of the ground, while Gillard was solid across the half back line. They do need more from Wearne, Littlewood and some accuracy from Ingham and they will be right in this contest.
Centrals are suffering terribly through injury at the moment but gave everything in the 2nd half against Sunbury. Kane Bullen was at his best while Tim O'Brien and Jono O'Brien were great around the ground. The smaller Broadford ground will suit Centrals as they should be able to close it down. Brett Payne will be the key for them up forward.
Tip: Broadford by 10 points.

Match of the Round
Sunbury Kangaroos Vs Macedon
With the race for the Top 5 spots looking very very tight, this game shapes as a season breaker for both sides.
The Kangaroos are looking to settle after a couple of weeks of distractions, last week they just couldn't break the game open in the second half against a desperate Centrals but in the end, they got the job done, just what they needed to do. Meacham was in good touch up forward while McGovern and Tie Cuffe were superb on the ball. The contested and physical nature of last weeks game certainly wont do them any harm in the lead up to this game either. The Roos had a number of players missing in last weeks game, Jamie Cuffe, Joeb Ploog and Mark McInerney to name just a few, so they would be hoping that they are able to return, while John Baker kicked a bag full in the Reserves, meaning a start this week wouldn't be out of the question.
The Cats would be disappointed with the result last week, but will no doubt bounce back, a couple of injuries prior to the game and a couple in the first half had them on the back foot. The Cats have plenty of class all over the ground and will look to build an attack from the half back line through Dettman and Co. If they can get outside and running, they are always hard to peg back. Hopefully this week will see the return of Ash Fleming and Jason Davies to sure them up.
This will no doubt be a cracking contest and well and truly worthy of the match of the round. One of these two sides will fall a game behind the pace, who will it be?
Tip: Sunbury Kangaroos by 10 points
