I think Woodend are to be commended for being proactive in shifting venues after recognising that Gilbert Gordon just aint up to playing footy on it the moment.
I tend to think the young Hawks will play better on a ground where they can use their pace & zip.

No doubt by now the RDFL has invited clubs wishing to "tender" their interest in staging finals to do so. Roughly when each year are finals venues announced and has the charge to host finals increased or stayed the same for 2011?

Yes, I had heard that both Macedon & Riddell had not applied this year. Pity really, as both venues offer it all. Perhaps (without knowing the intimate details) the respective clubs had done the math', & with the considerable up front fee charged by the league to hold a final, had figured, it just aint worth it !!!

Round 16
Only 3 rounds to go and the fight for positions in the Top 6 continues with some ultra important games for the round.
Romsey (1st, 15-0) Vs Lancefield (12th, 0-15)
Last Time: Lancefield 1.2.8 def by Romsey 30.25.205
Prediction: Romsey win.
Melton Centrals (11th, 4-11) Vs Rockbank (9th, 4-11)
Last Time: Rockbank 7.11.53 def Melton Central 7.6.48
These two sides go into this game with the slimmest of finals hopes. The loser here definitely says good bye in 2011 and will likely be consigned to a bottom two finish, the winner, keeps their slight hopes alive. The rivalry alone between these two clubs should ensure a cracking contest. Centrals have had a rough year, they have used 50 players this year in the seniors due to injury, that would make it tough on any side, especially a side that has questionable depth. Centrals have been brave, but they were demolished last week against the Cats and the long season may just be starting to take it's toll.
The Rams were highly regarded to fill the 6th spot in the finals and in my opinion would have been the toughest opponent of all that were fighting for that spot, but things in recent weeks just seem to have imploded, from the Broadford loss, the Rams have struggled to be competitive, which is surely disappointing, from a finals contender to a push over in just weeks. There seems to be players dropping back into the 2's to either qualify for finals or get the Reserves into the finals and now Zerafa has been suspended for 12 weeks. The Rams need to arrest this slide and go back to playing tough football, by playing the football. When they do, they are as tough an opponent as any in the league. A win this week gives them games against Diggers Rest and Lancefield to come, meaning they are not completely out of the picture, how will they respond?
How Centrals will win the game:
Motivation. Centrals know how to play their home ground as well as any and if they can inspire another effort this week, they will be in for a chance, they need to get every single player up for the game though, weak links will bring them unstuck.
How Rockbank will win the game:
Discipline. A concentrated effort once again on winning the football is needed from the Rams, forget about outside influences or the result at the end of the year, they just need to concentrate on this game and winning this game, everything has to become about one week at a time, too many times this year they have dropped games like this one.
Prediction: Rockbank by 22 points.
Diggers Rest (5th, 11-4) Vs Kilmore (8th, 5-10)
Last Time: Kilmore 3.13.31 def by Diggers Rest 14.16.100
This game means a lot more to one side than it does the other, notoriously, this time of the year for the Burra is about preparing for the first week of finals, the time that they will flick the switch and turn into a monster that is hard to contain. After last weeks result, the Burra are now certain to finish either 4th or 5th meaning a first up final against regular first final opponents in Macedon, there would need to be something extroadinary for that to change now. The Burra will be cruising, meaning they will be ripe for the picking for the Blues who are making a late charge at the 6. Whether they have the depth across the field to really push the Burra will remain the question, the quality at the top end is certainly good enough if they can push themselves into the game. The issue for the Blues is kicking enough goals, most weeks it is the midfield that contribute the majority of the scoreboard, they need a forward to stand up and deliver.
How Diggers will win:
Talent. The Burra have a wider spread of talent across the field dependent on everyone being available, they have the ability to put quick scoreboard pressure on against an opponent and then shut down their ability to score.
How Kilmore will win:
Early pressure. Will be essential for the Blues to put early pressure on their opponent and put early scoreboard pressure on, if they can get away and kick early goals then maintain the pressure they could just spring a surprise against a side that has their sights firmly set on finals.
Prediction: Diggers Rest by 24 points
Broadford (10th, 4-11) Vs Wallan (7th, 5-10)
Last time: Wallan 12.6.78 lost to Broadford 12.10.82
The Roos are coming off a couple of big losses and face another match with a potential finalist this week. Early in the season the Roos were able to account for the Magpies in a tough tight game, but the Magpies were missing Matt Robertson, who proved again last week just how important he is to the Wallan line up. This is a big test for the Roos, early in the season it was impressive to see just how much they had improved from last season, but in recent weeks, things have seemed to take a turn for the worse, this is a big week, in front of the home crowd, to show that they haven't dropped off after a long season and are determined to finish the year improved on the start of the year.
The Magpies were very impressive last week and seem to have stepped up a level from their performances of a couple of weeks ago. This is a big game for them as they have dropped games to sides in the lower levels of the ladder in the past away from home. With Robbo in great form and Cornish very good up forward, the Magpies have started to find options and are a dangerous match up for any side if they produce a performance like last week, that is the issue for them though, they need to make sure that for the remainder of the year, their performances match what they were able to produce against Romsey.
How Broadford can win:
Clearances/Stoppages. The Roos have some hard bodied and talented midfielders that can win the ball at will if they are on their game. They need to ensure that they are on top in this area if they are to be a chance. They also need to find an avenue to goal, the biggest issue the Roos face is having someone to kick a bag and drag them over the line.
How Wallan can win:
Intensity. The Magpies showed last week just how effective they can be when they show excitement in their games, when this group is up and about and gain momentum, they can be very very difficult to slow down.
Prediction: Wallan by 30 points
Woodend/Hesket (6th, 6-9) Vs Macedon (4th, 11-4)

This is a massive contest in the balance of the season for Woodend, with only 3 rounds remaining, they sit a game clear in third with games against other finals rivals Wallan and Kilmore. A win here will put the Hawks in the box seat for that final spot. They had a hard fought win against the Tigers last week who threw everything at them, but those games have rarely been a formguide of the Hawks in 2011, they rarely blow opposition sides out of the water, yet perform pretty well against the sides above them. In the match earlier in the year, the Hawks pushed the Cats to the limits at Tony Clarke before fading in the last quarter.
The Cats are on a bit of a roll, they demolished an undermanned Centrals last week, as they should have done and will go into this game full of confidence and preparing themselves for an assault on the finals. In anyone's language, a record of 11 wins and 4 losses is a great result for the season so far and they Cats will be looking to build on that, a loss for Riddell this week will see the Cats draw level with a win, although their percentage is a fair way off, so they need a big win to close the gap. Expect the Cats to come out firing, the Hawks always throw down the challenge to them and this one will be no different, they will need to be prepared for a contest and no doubt they will be.
How the Hawks will win:
Run. The Hawks will need to break the game open, they have many small running options around the ground and will need to run and carry the football and keep their forward 50 open to spot up forward targets, if the game turns into a set kick down the line/possession game, the Cats will have superior structures.
How the Cats will win:
Structure. As mentioned, when the game is played on the Cats terms they will be hard to stop, they have a set up that allows a quarterback style off the half back line, where they will set up and spread and make life very difficult. The big forwards of the Cats if they are allowed to get into one on one contests will be too tough to contain.
Prediction: Macedon by 24 points.
Match of the Round
Riddell (3rd, 12-3) vs Sunbury Kangaroos (2nd, 13-2)
Last Time: Sunbury Kangaroos 10.8.68 def Riddell 8.7.55
The battle for 2nd place will occur at Riddell this week and is the standout match of the round. Both sides will be keen to nail down their position on the ladder heading into the final rounds and finals.
The Bombers have faced injury concerns all year and this week will face the same issues, many of their stars are missing, but as they always do they have been able to find more than capable replacements. The Bombers have been in fine form, with some key wins over recent weeks, but will be looking to regain the authority over the Roos that they have had in the past, the winning run they had was put to an end earlier in the year in a tough contest at Boardman Reserve, so they will be keen to bounce back, many of their forward stars were missing in that game and all of those should be there this week. The Bombers will look for plenty out of Mick Allen and Matt Baird up forward and will this week be hopeful of a return from Brian Ruffell and Pete Robertson.
The Kangaroos continue to impress, Chris Meacham is continually kicking bags of goals and this week comes up against former teammate Nick Ash who he has had some great battles with. Last time around, it was the Kangas youngsters that were most impressive. Tie Cuffe, Mitch Strieff, Jake Young, Brenton Sutherland and Matt Leonard were outstanding, while Darragh McGovern dominated around the stoppages. With several key players finding form, the Kangas will go into this weeks game full of confidence that they can dispose of Riddell for the 2nd time this year and lock down 2nd place on the ladder heading into finals.
How Riddell/Sunbury can win:

The stoppages will play an important role in this game, the side that gets on top in the stoppages will have an advantage in this contest, both have strong forward line set up's capable of kicking bags of goals and both have solid backlines that create drive and opportunity around the ground, so much will come from the drive provided when the ball is stationary, whoever can get on top here will have the advantage, exactly like the match up the first time around, this is where Fishenden and Cuffe will play such an important role for the Kangaroos and why Glenn Robertson has a big task to nullify these two.
Whatever happens, this should be a ripping contest...

Very willing contest early today at Trennam, Plenty of punches thrown from both sides in the All in Bruhaha in the second quarter, macedon running away in the last half to win. Well done to Jock, Eaon Whitton (buffalo sports mogul) and Boags for making it a great day for the WHFNC albeit having to play away from home on such a landmark day. Rumour has it that Macedon had a big sook about having to play at either Gilbert Gordon or Woodend Racecourse due to the possibility of their pussy cat jumpers getting a bit muddy. Cant wait to see them go out in straight sets come finals time. Congrats to Davo from Romsey for the ton too!!
Maybe the fact that there is Junior finals at Racecourse oval next weekend had the WHJFC denying permission of any football at that ground this weekend.
