Head to the shops today to switch from Vodaphone to Telstra, but decide to pop in to JB Hi Fi first to check out the GoPros.

Find out there's a deal that ends today where if you switch to Telstra through JB Hi Fi, you get a $1200 gift card.

End up paying $16 for a GroPro and a drone, and all the trimmings.

Thank you world.
For someone who was a) gonna change anyway and b) didn't up your spending that much, that's a cracking deal

I find the best solution is no private health cover at all.

Medicare was always there for me through my health issues, even if it may have taken a bit longer for optional stuff.

Only took out private health cover recently when the levy I had to pay exceeded a typical premium and my teeth are starting to go which is something Medicare cannot help you with.

My girls are gonna need braces, but the max payout per year on orthodontics was $600 (can't remember which company). Braces cost thousands, so I failed to see where the value was.

Depends on how much you're earning.

If you and the family aren't rolling in it then you're best off staying public.

I'm thinking about pulling the pin on private health. It's up around $250/month now and we don't even use the extras. Or we do and then they're tapped. Would be better off putting $250/month into a bank account purely for health expenditure.

You might not need it now but one day you might regret getting rid of it.
Here's an example, my mrs started getting pain down both arms 18 months ago, pain started getting worse towards the end of last year so she went to the doctor who referred her to a specialist in the public system which she registered for and followed up but never heard back from.
In the meantime another doctor referred her to a specialist through the private system. In January this year she had an appointment with the private specialist, in February she had surgery on her elbow. In April she had a procedure on her neck. Both were through the private system and she's now pretty much pain free.
Today she received a letter from the public system specialist she was originally referred to about this time last year. The letter said that they still couldn't get her in for her first appointment and they weren't sure when they would be able to fit her in because there is such a long backlog.

Absolutely get what you're saying. However we've been trying to get our son into several private specialists for OT, speech therapy, even a paediatrician who specialises in diagnosing ADHD and it's been like pulling teeth every step of the way. When we have got him in we've quickly maxed the P.H. and then managed to get a Medicare rebate for subsequent sessions.

I don't think I'll cancel it long term but it's tempting to shelve while we save for another deposit. We got spooked into adding the kids to our policy (something of an oversight initially) after needing an ambulance for the young fella from Yallingup to Busselton one night of my wife's birthday celebrations and that costing me $1000 for a trip up the road.

Yeah I guess from my POV I saw my wife in a hell of a lot of pain, I can't imagine her being in that much pain for 1-2 years + and that's just for the first appointment to diagnose her through the public system, nevermind the wait for surgery etc. Could easily see it blowing out to 3-4 years, maybe more.
It would have 100% caused her to miss work, was beginning to get to that point before the surgeries, probably would have had to quit her job.
It's is ****ing expensive but it's probably saved us from a lot worse hardship

Last couple of pages have convinced me this is the best place to ask this:

Does anyone have any experience with portable back massages (cushion or seat cover) and can recommend a good one? Struggling for other ideas for my dad for Christmas.

Fek $250/month, im paying $455/month..likely more as the govt slowly reduce the threshold for rebate more and more

The kids have had grommets/tonsils and adenoids done.

Wife a few procedures and myself a few procedures which if we were on the public system we would still be on a wait list.

We also went private with all 3 kids.

With all our surgeries we didnt pay any out of pocket expenses.

But i feel we are paying more and more, but getting back less and less, especially with extras.

Yeah good point, let's get back to the good stuff.

How's the Lost rewatch going squashface
It has slowed down a bit but still chugging along.

Did the first season in a week and a half but I'm only approaching the end of season 2 now.

The longer it takes for me to get to the S3 finale the better, I'm not mentally prepared for that yet.

I bought a really shit one for my wife for Christmas one year. She used it once and it ended up in the bin

Far out that's pricey cover! We bumped ours up to cover OT and they waived the wait times, but it got tapped pretty quick. Just been told our 1yr old daughter has fluid behind her ear drum after one of them perforating during an infection and if it doesn't clear up on its own she will need grommets also. It's never ending.

That's the thing, I have no idea...so I'm no help whatsoever

It honestly doesnt end.

Depending on your level of cover there may be a gap to pay for the hospital. I think around $250 - $500

My favourite health insurance story was when I tore my ACL years ago and they tried to tell me I wasn't covered because it was a pre-existing condition. You ****ing wat?

Ended up paying for it all upfront because the public wait list was stupid (goodbye home deposit), then after the surgery etc managed to talk to a semi literate drone instead of the Freo supporter I was dealing with before, and she was all like why the **** did they try to argue a torn ACL was a pre-existing condition? Here's all your money back.

Far out.

"Yeah, you neglected to tell us you grazed your knee when you were 4 so your knees aren't covered."
