This methanol poisoning stuff in Laos is pretty ****en gross. Can't imagine how these people's families are feeling.

Yes it's sad for the families.

It's extreme however in SE asian countries and particularly somewhere as dangerous as Laos you just don't drink stuff that could be cheap spirits. If you want spirits it needs to be name branded and a fresh bottle otherwise beer and watch them pop the cap off for you.

Anyone drinking house cocktails in SE asian countries is a ****ing idiot. It's literally second of the list of things not to do after drinking water out of the tap. Third is stay the **** away from anything political.

Now it's 9.30am and because it's 30 degrees already but feels hotter and i've had breakfast, time for a San Mig.

I havent been on an overseas holiday in 10 years 😭

Apart from being a cheap holiday, apart from singapore couldn't think of anything worse than going to SE asia ever again.
Went to Malaysia earlier this year, was amazing. Would recommend.

Even name branded bottles can be a risk, particularly clear spirits like vodka and gin.
Name bottles on bar shelves look safe, but can be tampered with, added to. I've had Absolut and mixer several times in Bali over the years, and seen it poured from the bottle on the shelf, but it's not Absolut, just cheap vodka. But yes, never drink house cocktails, bottled beer is best. Spirits only in a good establishment and a spirit with a recognizable taste. Even locally manufactured/branded spirits, sold on supermart shelves, can be a concoction of strange ingredients to simulate alcohol-flavour such as rum for example - it's not a distilled rum as such, it has caramel flavouring etc to imitate the taste of (bad) rum. Whatever alcohol content is in there, is gonna be cheap n'nasty. You usually find these problems in muslim or very poor countries (Laos) where alcohol is not a part of their culture. Thailand is an exception, Thais love to drink, and whisky is popular, with many local 'okay' brands, so less likely to be tainted.

Singapore is such a westernised modernised asian country, so regulated, for me it lacks the freedom and exciting chaotic sprawl of many other asian countries. Used to go there a lot on visa runs from Indo. Great food courts. S.E Asia and the tropics is fantastic, depends what you're looking for, how adventurous you are, but I get that people don't like the tropics or asia, each to their own.

Whereabouts? I've only been to KL and probably wouldn't go back. One and done.
KL was good, but there were better places.

Loved the Cameron Highlands and then Georgetown/Penang was great.

Finished in Langkawi which was a bit more resorty and not really my speed.

I'm a boring old kent, my rule for travelling is to stick to places where it's safe to drink the tap water. Then again I've only been overseas once. Austria, Germany, UK with a quick detour to Paris on the train. Over Christmas and New Year. Was unreal.

I'm even stricter now that I have a son with anaphylaxis to pretty much all nuts, but waiting for his little brother to be a bit older before we tackle an overseas trip with the kids.
