Re-do the 2008 draft (Part 2)

It's a shame that this thread had to be split in 2, because I can't find my post to quote, where I said I wouldn't touch Beams because, not only is he not that good, but he has serious character issues.
I'm not saying any more.

Here is an interesting way to look at it;

Hartlett is close but I haven't seen enough of him to judge. I think Brown will develop into a great backman, probably better than Hurley.

Mez

which Brown are we talking about?
if its either of the twins, they were drafted in 2006. And at the moment its obvious Nathan >>> Mitch
unless im missing another obvious Brown

Yer i completely agree... Sidemuppet is way better currently and has more upside and expected to have an all round better career than watts, NN, Hill, Rich, Shuey, hannebery. Clear no 1 pick.

Just to give you some perspective. lynch kicked 60+ goals in a season back in wce's hayday.

The question is would you trade sidebottom for any of the above mentioned players? answer yes probably all.

I wouldn't trade Sidebottom for any of them.

To be honest, Collingwood wouldnt give up Sidebottom for Hill and Freo wouldn't give up Hill for Sidebottom. Thats because of vested time etc. If i made myself Neutral (As best i can), i would think most clubs would choose Hill over Sidebottom. This is due to his explosive pace and the pentration of his kicking. Lets face it, if he can bulk up a little, and find consistency then that guy is the answer to break a modern defensive zone. Would love him at the Pies.

Sidebottom, on the other hand, is not the athlete that a lot of other footballers are. But he is so clever and reliable. This will probly get laughed at, but the accuracy of his kicking on either foot is as good as i've ever seen. He lacks pentration of his kicks though. The ammount of times he does a 30 meter chip kick to advantage when you think its not possible is impressive. Of course most people will ignore this, but in todays game avoiding turn overs is just as important as a 55 meter roost there goes nowhere.

Beams on the other hand, i think he will be a decent player but not close to sidebottom and Hill. I see beams being the Scotty Burns type player. A work horse and player the fans will love but will never be considered in the top midfielders in the league.

One question i would ask, is do people think Sidebottom has the physical capabilities to improve on his explosiveness of movement and kicking? If he could improve that 5% you have an A grade quality midfielder.

It's funny, across the years they have constantly switched between who was the better twin. Following Nathan's final performance, he again leads the way. However, there remains not much between them.

Yeah Sidebottom is so out of HIlls league after all he only came runner up for the norm smith in a premiership team whilst being top 5 in the first GF.

Because we rate kids based on a couple of games...

Last I checked you recruit players to win flags, this kid not only helped but led the way.

When those couple of games are the biggest two games of the year then yeah, I think we can pass judgement!

Last I checked you recruit players to win flags, this kid not only helped but led the way.

The problem with your rating is the fact that Hill is yet to play a grand final and as such, you can't rate him in such a way. For all you know, he could win a Norm Smith. But even if he doesn't have a good Grand Final, 1 game is not a sufficient sample size.

Who would want a kid with Sidebottom's finals history...
So did Justin Blumfield, what's your point? Sidebottom is a very good player, however he's not going to be an absolute superstar

Watch Hill play, you will agree Sidebottom isn't in his league. Hill is the 3rd best young mid I've seen in the last 15 years, behind Judd & Selwood.

You'd be off your rocker if you didnt trade Hill for Sidebottom. Think there is only 1 or 2 you could possibly pick ahead of Hill at this stage.

It's weird, Hill is obviously a better player than Steele, but at the same time I wouldn't trade Steele for him.

Is that weird?

Not at all, I know exactly how you feel. You grow attached to those that play in your jumper. I feel the same about Fyfe. Love everything about the way he plays footy and comes across as a down to earth, intelligent young man with strong values.
Whilst common sense would dictate that I should swap him for say, Tom Scully if the situation arose I couldn't do it. Fyfe is part of the family.
Hill I wouldn't swap for anyone in the league. He is my favourite player ever. Such a quiet, humble hard working little superstar.

Sidebottom was also BOG in the final vs Adelaide last year. It seems to be more than just a couple of lucky games and his 10 goals in the tac cup final shows he has a habit of playing well in finals

Not at all. I wouldn't trade Naitanui for anyone in that draft. I doubt Freo would trade Hill for him or Melbourne trade Watts etc.

Neither. Thats partly due to his potential and fact that i reckon he will be close to the best player in this draft it will just take him time, needs because without him we would have 0 rucks after cox is gone literally. Also he is a lad and played with a screwed shoulder half the year which showed he has spirit.

If the teams drafting were irrelevant I would at the moment have:

Naitanui
Hill
Watts
Hurley
Sidebottom
Rockliff
Shuey
Vickery
Ballantyne
Broughton
Rich

Watts on a steep incline though. As soon as he shows us some 4+ goal performances, I think he's well and truly justified being taken at number one. At the moment he's playing brilliantly, but kind of there and not quite at the same time.

Pretty good list. Reckon Hill is dropping, playing injured maybe but his intensity and appetite for the contest is well down. NN is having a great year and Watts has been great after a slowish first few weeks.

Yarren is playing well, Shuey could win the RS this year, Rich is motoring along nicely, Vickery has been one of the big movers. Just a super draft that's looking stronger every year as the players who started off undersized, injured or KPPs begin to show how good they can be.

I don't think I can actually order them at the moment. This draft looks sensational:

Top Echeleon:
Watts
Naitanui
Hill
Sidebottom
Rich
Shuey
Vickery
Ballantyne
Hurley
Yarran
Ziebell

Next Level:
Hartlett (still rather unproven)
Trengove
Davis
Schoenmakers
Zaharakis
Redden
Rockliff
Bennell
Savage
Hannerberry
Beams

The rest are either unproven or haven't made the grade.
