That's not great for us as that makes North more likely to pick up a mid with the first this draft. I feel they're much more likely to end up with the spoon.
Also makes the AFL more likely to hand them a PP

Yeah true.....didn't consider that. Hopefully we continue with the current shit and can beat North to Wardlow.

Yeah, hard to imagine a team that has a 10+ win streak early in the season and follows it up immediately with 3 straight losses could end up winning the flag.
Richmond did pretty much that in 2017.

Also, North were undefeated until the bye and then won 2 more games for the season a few years back.

They also lost their second in charge in that department to Freo over the off season. Says a lot about how important that area of the field is.
Yep.

One of my mates used to be a personal trainer (he's a Detective now, of all things...) and used to play Rugby League at a local club here in Brisbane, whilst doubling as their S&C coach. Team was pretty mediocre when he started there and won the flag after he started training them.

These ammos players absolutely hated it, until they realised they could just run over the top of all the other teams after half time because they were way fitter.

That was with 30-45 minutes of additional running and endurance training a week. Imagine what full time blokes could put in?

If he continues like this they'll get a single mid level first rounder next year. Or say if Adelaide and port have top 5-6 picks you would expect norths second rounder to be heading back.
The kid has physical abilities a lot of players don't have. He will be elite and I suspect most of the clubs know it.

I think another team around that time did something similar too.

North should have taken the 3 first rounders Adelaide offered for JHF

He wont re-sign and they wont get near that currency when he wants to move back to SA

I hear JHF is considering launching an appeal for his suspension today, so he can get it increased and miss more matches for Norf

$800 000 for a petulant 10 game player.
OK Kane.

Kanes Cornes “Could Port Adelaide or the Crows, because it’s going to take like $800,000 on a salary to get him, how would you go if you had to walk up to say Ollie Wines and say ‘I’m going to pay this second-year player more than you’re on’.

Remember how much Tom Boyd got for moving from GWS after his first year?

It galls me to see the pies doing so well with an exciting style - McCrae is doing well. We played off in the GF in 18, and now look at the disparity. Oh dear!
Yes, we won the flag and their coach at the time got sacked.

Not even remotely similar.

I find it quite inspiring. Last year they were a rabble. Players too old, no good young talent, stale gameplan (everything they are saying about us). Amazing how quickly you can turn it around if you get a fresh coach and some elite young talent.

Simmo either changes big time or should get the sack next year.

I prefer our position.

They nabbed Daicos who is a true #1 pick. Then they have Josh Daicos and Darcy Moore. They have some other good players too, but I don't think they have squad yet to go all the way. And let's be honest - most people would rather 4 years bottom 4, 2 years 3rd quartile, 1 year top 8, 3 years top 4, and a flag, over 10 years top 8ish, top 4 ish, no flag.

You have to build the squad and I feel like we are in a stronger position.

Personally, I just prefer our usual method of regular finals appearances with a flag here and there while spending hardly any length of time in the bottom 4.

Seems like the other more successful clubs prefer that method also - Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney…

Geelong where thereabouts early to mid 2000s, before having a stinker in '06 and doing some soul-searching before going onto win 3 flags. Other than 2019 grand final, they've been finals fodder ever since '11.

Hawks won in '08, before kissing finals the next year and going on to play in 4 grand finals when their squad finally matured. Done nothing since '15.

Sydney won in '12 and have been making up the numbers ever since.

Hawthorn would be the only club out of those 3 that I have any serious confidence in having a sustained push for a flag over the next decade.

Not sure any of those clubs should be seen as a beacon of success to model ourselves off of, right now.

It's been good for us so far. We had bottom 4 dips before both our last 2 flags. This one may have to be a bit longer because this time we are proper fubar'd.

Hawks - they had a big stretch down the bottom before building the team that won 4 flags.
Geelong - been competitive and in the hunt for a decade but haven't landed the big blow. It's great while you think you're in with a shot, but when that dries up and there's no flags - it hurts more than following a side that had some years down the bottom but with a flag to show for it.
Sydney - these guys are the only true exception. Won the '12 flag without bottoming out. May be in the hunt now but my gut tells me they will fall short.

You have to build a team to win a flag. History tells us it's very hard to do without bottoming out.

Bottom 4 dips is one thing, spending 4 years down there is another. You don’t have to be a basketcase to build a list.

We won our last flag playing an entire finals series with only 2 top ten picks in the team - and one of those was Chris Masten
