Brisbane did the same thing with a last minute attempt to get Paul Roos. It also blew up spectacularly. Guess it will be a few more years before Essendon win a final.

Wow. That ‘board meeting’ thread is 2500+ posts deep in the space of 4 days

Puts our drafts and contracts thread to shame 😂

Now THAT'S how you melt people, lift your game

What I'd love to hear:

McLachlan: "Listen, Essendon you guys are campaigners. Campaigner players, campaigner staff, campaigner club. We know you've got money and supporter base but we just can't get past how big a bunch of campaigners you are. So we're merging you with North".
Essendon have always been my most hated club and everything they continue to do just validates that stance.

Glad to see that Clarko chose North. Essendon need to be a bit less like a drunken old Western bar fight to attract any serious coach or player. Seriously dysfunctional club with glaring cultural problems. I imagine this external review is going to result in a few heads now being lopped off metaphorically.

Send em to Tassie and solve two problems at once. The Tassie Bombers doesn't sound to bad.

Clarko should straighten North up a little and potentially break them out of the “we’ll be fine because we have Shinboner spirit” approach that has ****ed them for decades.

Essendon on the other hand. Nice work shafting your coach and revealing to the world you have no plan whatsoever, but yet again continue to trade on the 1980s concept that Essendon has pull. Clarko just chose one of the worst teams in AFL history, who are constantly in relocation discussions, with a #1 pick that wants out over you and your Big Four Brand.

The local suburban comp you won some wartime flags in is over campaigners, welcome to the 21st century. Get Hird back and stick Lloyd in charge of the ressies, that’ll fix everything.

Honestly, north was the easy option for clarko. No scrutiny, no supporters, no one actually cares if they win or lose. Essendon would be a tough gig, all it says to me is he doesnt have the heart or stomach for a big job. Think north was the right choice for him

That’ll be it.

Clarkos decision has nothing to do with who's on the board, our list is too good to pass up.

Posts from this morning that have aged like fine wine.

It’s interesting that people who bemoan Essendon‘s continual lack of process in the revolving door or coach selection, also wanted Essendon to bypass process and appoint Clarkson? A man who last coached a final win 7 years ago. It makes no sense.

Imagine not having won a final in seven years.

In regards to Clarko, the man literally chose an absolute basket case list over ours. A list that can't even put a leash on an 18 year old, who is by all signs ready to gtfo.

If that's the kind of pursuit he's choosing then it's quite clear he's not in the right frame of mind to coach us. Dodged a bullet.

Good. I don't see any downside to finishing dead last (other than some bullshit around a fake wooden spoon award):
  • we get the first selection in the draft and can use it as leverage in trades with Brisbane over bidding for Ashcroft
  • if we want to trade back, we can get a better deal for pick 1 than pick 2. We will also hold the first pick on day 2, which can have a lot of value if we choose to trade it
  • it erodes NM bid for a priority pick
  • if we finish bottom 4 next year, we can make an argument for our own priority pick (won't get it, but it would set us up for a go if we're bad in 2024)
  • Our club has to own up to the fact our football program is the worst it can possibly be. Finished last in AFL, AFLW and WAFL. This will help anyone on the board who is pushing for change

The funniest thing about the Essendon situation is that we probably still have supporters who wish we were more like Essendon

B-but a revolving door of coaches and immediate sackings after a bad season to compound 18 years without a finals win is how you run AFL clubs!
