Rhys Shaw to Sydney for 3rd Round Pick

good post, but why did he 'need' to go?

Just had his time. We've got other players coming through that IMO are better so I really saw Rhyce as a fringe player. I was surprised he knocked back the Brissy gig last year and he is just getting to that age if he wanted to keep playing he needed to seriously look at another home.

Medhurst turned it around and Rhyce might too. Roos will play him differently and he'll certainly give his all.

Got this for the Sydney Website.

I think the fact that Shaw was a Collingwood player put the wind up alot of us.We now have to get used to the idea that he is one of our Swannie boys and we should welcome him as we would any draftee. One thing Shaw will bring to the table is pace...something we need more of.

Good trade for you guys I think. Will run all day, breaks lines, great pace etc. Will also be very keen to prove himself.

Only thing is his disposal, which is questionable at times, but I dont subscribe to that.

Sad to see him go, good luck and goodbye!

He's not that quick and his disposal is not a good asset, his heart and endurance are

Apologies. I got that impression that he is quick, although he is probably still quicker than most of our midfielders :p

Perhaps he will rotate with Kennelly, Mattner, Malceski across half back and wing.

its fine if he handballs it off tho

Great. That's all we need. Another player that can't hit a target. FFS.

Would have much preferred Corrie from Brisbane with our 3rd pick, instead Collingwood got him for pick 93, which was their 7th round pick.

I just hope he can improve his effiency rating, and keep him away from Jonno Brown when we play Brisbane.

I agree, much prefer Corrie.
Younger, quicker, more versatile and a better kick, although less endurance.

Because of their lack of crumbers Corrie has been playing up forward for Brisbane, but came into the league as HBF/winger (and one of the few NT guys to have won AA selection at U18) and I'd imagine that is where he will end up at Collingwood.

Im not a fan of his footy, but he was pretty cheap, hes a nice bloke too, so Ive heard.

  • SHANE Wakelin has blasted former teammate Rhyce Shaw, accusing him of being immature and taking life as a footballer for granted.
"He (Rhyce) has been one of the biggest disappointments of this group," Wakelin said.
"At some point in life you've just got to grow up and you've got to want to achieve in life.
"Whatever will be will be with Rhyce, I think."

I went and watched training quite a lot during pre-season and it struck me that Rhyce was consistently working harder than the other players, week in, week out. I think he went on to have quite a good season this year until the injury, and the "unpleasantness".:p

You guys have got a good senior footballer who will no doubt be refreshed and reinvigorated by the change of scenery. Don't be surprised when he plays some very good football for you next year.

Good luck Rhyce, I wish you well.

You'll be surprised with his performance I think. He is not soft, he is pretty tough and will put his body on the line when needed. Not very good with one on ones though. Disposal is pretty bad, he can hit targets but when he misses one badly it affects him and his next couple of disposals are just as bad. Very good tackler and good contester (just not good one on one, if he has to take on 3 or 4 his 2nd and 3rd efforts are fantastic).

What he said. Has an excellent work ethic but it's no good dashing 40m with the footy and then kicking it over Hall's head.

A bit shocked at first, and a bit dissapointed because he's going to be competing primarily with our younger players for a spot in the team if he plays on the wing. Still pretty happy with the trade though considering we got him for a bargain.

Id rather have a beer with 'Agro' than Wakelin..

Anyone else find it disconcerting that nothing official has been said about the acquisition of Shaw? Like an explanation of why we got him, perhaps what sort of role he would play etc. All the talk from The Silver Hammer is about O'Keefe's contract negotiations.

One concern I have is what does it mean for a guy like Laidlaw.

IMO probably the closest we've got to Shaw (although quicker & a better kick).

He's been crippled by hamstring problems and at 22 (before next season) I wonder if he'll still be there next year?

I'd keep him in a heartbeat, but with Everitt, Mathews (and probably Davis) out and I'd imagine a couple of rookie upgrades we have a full list.

Even if Shaw takes ROK's place on our list, it still leaves places at a premium.
I'd hate to see a 27yo average 'outsider' take a place on our list from a guy we've nurtured and who I, at least, rate highly.

Man I'm not that happy with us trading him -I think he'll be a really good pick up for Sydney. Rhyce definitely has pace, he was probably the equal fastest at Collingwood. Him receiving the ball from Kirk etc and running it far down the field could become a feature of the Swans game next year. Has a similar ability to Malceski in terms of generating drive off half-back.

He can also play really well as a tagger at times -he had an excellent game on Judd this year.

He was one of our best players in many games this season. The main reason that Pies supporters aren't shocked that he's leaving, I think, is really due to his involvement in the H.Shaw/Didak incident (and him being the least accomplished player involved, thus becoming the scapegoat) and the subsequent negative comments from Wakelin. He also has been rumored to not get along well with Malthouse on a personal level.
