The idea that its an appealing job is really not true. Its incredibly unappealing due to the circumstances. Coaching a team after a long tenure, dynasty era is the hardest gig in coaching. Only Scott at Geelong was able to nail it.

Coaching Richmond isolated to the circumstances though, is obviously far more appealing. But the circumstances make it one of the worst. End of a long tenure. End of a dynasty. Possible board changes from the top, including Benny (word is benny needs to take an AFL gig first if he ever wants the CEO gig), several older leaders set to retire, oldest list in the league. Currently looking likely to be bottom 5. No draft picks this season. Underwhelming group of under 21's.

I honestly have zero opinion on who we should take at this stage.

No idea at this stage who we should go for.
What will be interesting is if McQualter is successful and gets us to the finals.

Once bitten twice shy if that was to happen again
I’m plsd we went with McQ as he’s a great unknown, thick with the playing group and has attracted strong interest from rival clubs in recent times given his role in 3 flags

So is this McQualter gig a long interview? Or just great experience on his resume?

I'm not really keen on promoting inside the tent, I think after so long with Dimma, some new ideas and voices from outside the club currently would freshen up the playing group and gameplan.

Another garbage post by you. One of the 3 biggest clubs in the league, MCG home ground, Punt Road next door, soon to be new state of the art facilities, 100k members, a solid core of quality players, NOT a full Hawks/Roos/Eagles type rebuild required.

It couldn't get much more appealing for aspiring head coaches.

Seems to be highly regarded within the 4 walls. Lets see what he can do. I am still bullish on the team, as Dimma obviously still is ("a few bounces/injuries are the reason we are where we are on the ladder now").

What about Kane Lambert? Has the footy smarts and such a good bloke loved by all.

Complete bullshizen , coaching an AFL side is a cherished position even more so one of the powerhouse clubs with all the resources to be successful , we will have a cox plate field . Our last short list was Dimma Hinkley brad scott , prob 30+ years coaching between them , I only hope we get it right again
How quick can the “process” be completed? If it is possible could a new senior coach be appointed in 6-8 weeks, with him taking the reins for the back-end of the season. Gives him an immediate look at the playing group, an opportunity to try a player in a different position and a chance for some fringe players to prove their worth.
i think it will be prolonged as key figures may well be involved with rival contending clubs

No to Buckley.
* no to Hinkley, Port fans despise the man despite him having them won 7 straight and sitting 3rd on the ladder.
gonna destroy their party on sunday 💪🏻 might kill a slab of the famous victorian nectar over it 💪🏻

After 1 season as an assistant? Nah.

I’m not sure who, but I am really hoping we go towards a modern coach that will approach a game plan best suited towards football nowadays. The game has changed so much in the last couple of years and we need a forward thinker to transition the list and game plan going forward.

Someone who values efficiency going inside 50 and scores from inside 50 conversion.

Can't keep revolving a game plan around a million inside 50 entries and keeping the ball in there with pressure. Unsustainable as we've seen

Highly doubt caretaker gets gig , unless he took us to finals then that’s certainly provide something to think about

Curious what tweaks McQ makes in this dept also does he start picking a side that invests in the future , I hope so

Benny will NEVER get the top job at the AFL Dillon is younger and will be there 10 years, Benny will be to old by then

Head Coach - Trent Cotchin
Assistants - Riewoldt , Grigg , Lambert , Rance , Astbury

Dusty takes over from Balmey when he retires

Yeah but they wont be telling him that. So it will come down to if Benny is happy being a Richmond man, or has dreams of career, higher income etc.

The obvious candidates with plenty of experience are:

Buckley (avail)
Hinkley (n/a)
Simpson (n/a)
Knights (avail)
Leppa (avail)
Ratten (avail)

We already have Teague and Rutten so I assume that's a no to them.

Then you have untried assistants with good reputations

Yze
Hansen
Graham
Enright
Caracella

Then you have Richmond Men that have left the club recently and are at another club

Grigg
Newman
Chaplin

To be honest, I against an untried coach of any kind, given the situation we are in, a rookie head coach rarely survives the pressure of taking over from a dynasty type coach.
I also don't rally want Grigg, Newman or Chaplin. Grigg I could live with after he has more experience, but I don't like the leadership of the other two at all.

So it kind of leaves it to the top 6, and if I'm being honest, my top 3 would be Simpson, Buckley and Knights (in no particular order)

I think he is smart enough to know that ship has sailed, if he was ever going to get it , it should have been now

Ask Matthew Knights that question

Or Matthew Voss.

Or Sam Mitchell.

Only Chris Scott & Geelong was able to do it & that was because he left DURING the team was till awesome . Brad Scott literally got gifted the team at its peak

Whoever takes our job on is not taking us on the top - we are near the bottom. We have the oldest list in the land. IT might be appealing in your eyes as you love Richmond and thing bigger is better - but circumstance always trumps size. The circumstances are awful & History says you are wrong.

Agree. Doesn't mean he doesn't have another brightness of future in footy that doesnt involve richmond.

I hope he sticks around, thats for sure. But he looked pretty broken today. If Balmey left right now he would literally be the last man standing. its not much fun the job when it looks like this. So if he can earn another $200k a year doing a job that isn't as daunting - why stay outside of loyaly and love?

And in that sense - when is "enough, enough"? Dare say Benny is saying to himself right now - Perhaps i too have given this club enough of my life. He has been part of this club effectively for 30+ years without much break. When they make the pyramid of Richmond greats, Benny sits nearly above all for me - even Cotchin & Dusty. he was a leader as a player and continued it for 20 years after. Have more respect for him than anyone at the club
