Tough one, for me, but I have decided on:

Pick 20: Gold Coast select Jonathon Marsh

Writeup Courtesy of Knightmare.

WA – KPF/Util
Height: 191cm, Weight: 89kg, DOB: 17/10/1995
Recruited from: East Fremantle
Style:
Player comparison: Gary Rohan
Range: 15-50
Profile: Has absolutely elite pace for a player of his size and type. Has played mostly as a key forward this year where he like no other key forward has the ability to create separation as a player simply no player can go with for pace. At ground level he’s an absolute freak with the way he follows up so quickly and picks up that ground ball so cleanly. He also is a guy who can go on long leads up the ground but then really push back hard into the forward 50 so quickly that few defenders will be able to go with him. I’m just not yet convinced that Marsh is a key forward at the next level, he plays it more in the style of a long leading half forward but he plays it well and with his pace has the ability to turn games. Marsh has also having played as a midfielder before does have some ability to go onto the ball. I’d also be very interested to see what he could do on a back flank or wing. At this stage his best position is not apparent and it’s not clear that he does find a role, but in a team where a coach can correctly utilise his unique skillset he does have the opportunity to become something really special. It’s just probably not going to be as a key forward with his marking ability poor, set shot goal kicking below average and limited interest in putting in the effort defensively. Somewhere else. Perhaps.

Why Gold Coast: With Sam Day as the Suns main focal point up forward, and Charlie Dixon as the clubs swingman, the Suns, especially with the retirement of Jared Brennan, need a player who can play both tall and small, as well as push up the ground, similar to what Brennan did. Marsh, in my mind, is the perfect replacement for Brennan, as he is probably better when the ball hits the ground, than what he is in the air, and is very, very quick. Probably not good enough as a marking key forward, but as a half forward flanker, or even as a wingman, I think Marsh can have a very successful AFL Career.

Who else I considered: Darcy Gardiner, Trent Dumont, Mitchell Harvey.

A comparison between our top 20 and the D&T Big Footy Phantom top 20.
- Kelly & Scharenberg is vastly different to Boyd & Billings at 1 & 2
- Same 6 players featured in the top 6 in both drafts
- Salem at 7 Dunstan at 9 Freeman at 12 differ from the D&T board taking them at 12 16 & 9 respectively
- The 3 differences between our top 20 and their top 20 is the inclusion of Impey Templeton & McCarthy in place of Crouch(13) Dumont(19) & Cripps(20)

Be interesting to see how our draft pans out compared to theirs over the next 3 rounds. Reckon there may be quite a few differences of opinions now as posters start looking at including more of their own personal favorites over what have been the think tank concensus.

Looks like we are travelling extremely slow !

Flea hasn't been on since midnight so hopefully he gets on later tonight or first thing tomorrow and we can get moving again. Otherwise I'll give him the next player from the Big Footy Phantom that hasn't been taken and we'll move on.

If Flea hasnt been on for 24 hours , I think we should just move onto the next selection and he can select from who is available when he finally logs online - Im sure Flea wouldnt want to be holding things up -

Sorry for the delay gents.

Port pick 21

21 Port Adelaide – Matt Crouch (VIC – Mid)
Height: 181cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 21/04/1995
Recruited from: North Ballarat Rebels
Style: Sam Mitchell (without the footskills)
Player comparison: Toby Greene
Range: 10-20
Profile: Crouch is an elite inside player and probably the elite inside player in this draft. In the TAC he has not had any games with less than 30 disposals and multiple 40+ disposal games to demonstrate just how dominant he is. High production player and can contribute from season one. Real stoppage specialist and just thrives on the contested aspects of the game. Hard at the ball and a really natural inside extractor burrowing in, winning the ball and setting up the receivers outside of the pack by hand with that real inside distributing side of his game particularly excellent. He does it as well as any and just thrives on that contested ball type game as that clearance specialist. Crouch is also an exceptional tackler showing strong tackling technique and really going in hard with those tackles and it seems to be another area of the game that he just really enjoys. Athletically Matt is not nearly as explosive as his older brother Brad but has shown some improvement over the past season in his foot speed which is encouraging. Footskills only average by position. He’s not going to do damage by foot but his footskills are also on the improve and can be with further training solid at the next level. The aspect I do like with his footskills is that particularly in the forward half in those stoppage situations he’s very dangerous because he gets his hands on it and can quickly get it onto his boot for a quick snap on either side. Crouch despite his competition best numbers through the midfield is relatively considered a lazy trainer with his endurance is not nearly where it could be so if he can step into an AFL program and if he smartens up and puts in the work he has the ability to become a special midfielder.

Brisbane are delighted to announce:

Pick 22: Trent Dumont

Write up tomorrow at some point but suffice to say was praying for him from about pick 12 onwards. Exceptional qualities and is one who will make a massive impact from day one at Brisbane.

Pick #18 - St.Kilda - Jarman Impey - 177cm - 78kg - Forward/Midfielder - Murray Bushrangers
A personal favourite of mine and a real excitement machine, Impey is a highly skilled player who can play pretty much anywhere you want him to. Impey is one of those types of players that often goes later in the draft than in hindsight they should have, so whilst I've gone early here at pick 18, I think I'll look back on this selection and be very, very happy with it. He's not your typical small forward as he can play midfield when he's struggling to get a kick as well as a rebounding half back. I don't think this kid gets enough love on here. I always laugh reading some of the drooling over Garlett on BF and other forums. This kid is everything people think Garlett is and then some.
Strengths: Impey is a superb athlete. He has a fantastic combination of speed and agility for when the ball hits the deck. Combine that with his fantastic leap and marking ability and you have the perfect small forward who can get the job done both at ground level and in the air. Those who know of my love of Walters from Freo well this kid is Walters with pace and a better midfield game. His kicking skills, whilst not elite, are still very good and he has a great goal sense.
Weaknesses: There aren't too many weaknesses to Impey's game. I think he could build a bigger endurance base and develop his defensive game further. Whilst he has the midfield game at junior level to overcome it, he can go missing in the forward line as all small forwards do and at AFL level his endurance will be a little way off playing much midfield.
Why St.Kilda? Best available. Will make an excellent partner in crime with Tom Boyd up forward. Saints have a tonne of rubbish small forwards on their list after the retirement of Milne and Impey is a huge upgrade on them and will probably play 10-15 games next year if he does land at the Saints.
Pick #19 - St.Kilda - Eli Templeton - 182cm - 75kg - Midfielder - Burnie
One of my absolute favourites in this draft, Templeton is a highly skilled midfielder who can play multiple positions. Templeton seems to have dropped off the radar a bit this year and one of the major knocks on him seems to be that he's only 67kg. Funny thing is, he actually isn't. He's 75kg. No different to Aish, Kelly, Kolodjashnij, Z.Jones and many others that I can't think of off the top of my head. All the articles I've read on him say 3rd rounder and in this draft any club who gets him in the 3rd round has got themselves a bargain. I think he's one of the few players in this draft that could become an A-grader and would be happy with him at Richmond for pick 12.
Strengths: Templeton is one of the cleanest players in this draft pool. He rarely fumbles the footy, even under pressure. He has very, very high skill level by both hand and foot, which are only helped by his excellent decision making. Of all the midfielders in the draft, Templeton has one of the bigger tanks going around having run a 10:05 in the 3km time trial (7th) and reached level 15.3 on the beep test (4th.) This combination of elite endurance and a high skill level and decision making have seen him used primarily in an outside role this year. However, put a few more kgs on him so he can match it with the men and you will end up with a very talented inside/outside midfielder.
Weaknesses: IMO Templeton is a very well-rounded midfielder so there aren't a lot of weaknesses. He's skilful, he runs hard and although maybe lacking a little pace (not sure how he tested?) I don't think this is really a weakness more so that it's not a weapon he possesses. If anything his only real weakness has been his lack of size, though as I've mentioned I see it as a non-issue at a now healthy 75kg.
Why St.Kilda? A couple of reasons I've gone with Templeton. Firstly, I've already got our big KPF for the next 10 years. It's sorted. So now it's time to sort the midfield out. Templeton is the best available midfielder I thought I had on my list and turns out I was right much to my relief. I've gone with a couple of guys here that I think can become stars of the comp, which is what the Saints need having traded into a weak draft.

23 Adelaide – Darcy Gardiner (VIC – KPD)

write From Knightmare
Height: 192cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 22/09/1995
Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
Style: Darren Glass
Player comparison:
Range: 7-20
Profile: Gardiner clearly the best key defender in this draft. Gardiner has a strong shutdown game and plays a really physical brand of footy. He has a very strong 1v1 game where he can get stops against bigger opposition but then also stay with them on the lead making him an effective shutdown defender. Gardiner also has an above average rebounding game where he has the smarts to know when he can get off his man to take an intercept mark and in the contest has the smarts to know when to go the fist and when he can take the mark. For his type Gardiner is also an above average user of the footy and shows composure with ball in hand and hits his targets, even when under pressure. He’s also played as a key forward but he’s definitely better suited as a key defender.

CAMERON CONLON

DOB: 3/7/195
Club: Northern Knights
Height: 198cm
Weight: 86kgs

Ooh the first shock? You guys stole all my players, especially Gardiner who I was just about to pick, but noooooo you have to pick them all. I could pick some vanilla midfielder but where is the fun in that?

Conlon is one of the most interesting prospects in this draft. While people have consistently remarked about the lack of quality talls in this draft, Conlon stands out as a guy who could really develop into a nice prospect.

I watched a bit of Conlon last year for the Northern Knights as part of my plan to procrastinate as much as possible during my thesis writing at La Trobe, which was very successful (the procrastination that is) I've seen a lot more players this year, but Conlon sticks in my mind as someone I cannot forget. Every time I was worried about whether I should be actually doing some work, Conlon gave me a reason to forget about that and focus on the football. Conlon displayed everything you would want in a KPF.

Conlon is a tremendous athlete. He uses his big frame to exert massive pressure on his opponent. Most most opponents at junior level would struggle with a player the size of Conlon, but Conlon uses his physical advantage to the maximum effect, physically engaging and harassing his opponent, and working them under the ball effectively. Sometimes, a big player will not use his big frame at junior level, as some big guys do not relish body contact. This is not true for Conlon, who is a player who relishes playing one on one.

However, Conlon does not just rely on his big frame and his ability to win one on one contests. The other quality of Conlon is that he consistently leads and puts maximum effort in working his opponent over. At junior level, Conlon's height meant that he often played against taller players who were not that quick or agile, or had poor second efforts. Conlon is consistently on the move in the forwardline, either trying to dodge his opponent or lead to the ball. Conlon knows how to outfox his opponent, knowing how to run forward and double back. This means that Conlon is a clever forward, and has a number of tricks which he can use if a defender is working him over. And when Conlon does find the ball on the lead, he either uses his reach advantage to mark it out front, or stretches out to mark it at the highest point, he uses his leap well. And when he does mark it, he's a sticky grab, and rarely spills a chance. Another thing about Conlon is that he's also fairly quick for a guy his size. He combines speed with agility and constant movement and this makes him hard to handle and keep quiet. Conlon is also a long and straight kick for goal, and has a solid kicking technique. Conlon is also a decent ruckman given he can also play up forward, making him an even more impressive prospect. Conlon is not a ruckman who dabbles in the arts of the forward, he is a genuine forward who will worry oppositions if he gets his body right.

One thing which Conlon will need to do is get in the gym. Conlon is about 10 kilograms underweight, and could easily break the 100kg mark without worry. He already has great athleticism, and an further developing his imposing frame would just add to the package. Conlon has a big frame which he can put weight on, so it is not as if he will struggle to put on weight. In a dedicated training regime, I can see him putting on weight easily.

Now Conlon sounds like the ideal forward, and should be snapped up immediately right? Not so fast. While Conlon had a really promising junior, he was also often one of the biggest players on the park, meaning at times, he was a man playing against boys. He definitely was one of, if not the tallest forward at underage level. Sometimes I used to feel sorry for the poor kid who had to play on Conlon in 2012, but at the same time, I knew we would be entertained. But Conlon wont be playing against boys at AFL level, making it a different prospect.

Furthermore, Conlon was injured for pretty much all of 2013, has suffered from knee and shoulder injuries, and from what I'm told, didn't test at the Combine. This makes him hard to predict, has Conlon improved, or will his injuries hurt his chances to make it at AFL level? This is a big question, history tells us that while midfielders often recover from serious injury, KPPs, especially one as tall as Conlon sometimes do not. They struggle to regain the feel of the game, and generally, tall players take longer to recover from serious injury. This is why Conlon would be ill-suited to a developing club who are putting their hopes on the next batch of kids to make it. While Conlon's 2012 form suggests that he is an obvious candidate to succeed, there is no 2013 form to speak of. If I were ranking Conlon based on 2012, I would be happy to draft him in the top ten, but this is not 2012 and Conlon has a serious injury to recover from.

Why Hawthorn: For starters, Hawthorn just won the flag, and have most areas covered. They can afford to take a risk in a draft which is fairly weak. Hawthorn will back their staff in to develop any player they recruit, and while Conlon will need some training, it is not beyond Hawthorn to develop him. They can afford to take risks, given their list is still fairly balanced. What is missing is a key tall, with the departure of Franklin, Hawthorn have Roughead, but not much else. Other players considered were guys like James Tsitas, Patrick Cripps and Isaiah Miller, but I went with the lanky tall instead. Conlon might be there at Hawthorn's second pick, but there has been talk about how different recruiters rate the talls differently, making it hard to know where Conlon will go. I can see Hawthorn considering Conlon. I also considered Garlett but I can't be stuffed writing about that figjam who is overrated anyway, and I doubt Garlett will work well with Clarkson anyway, who is a fairly no nonsense character who does not appreciate histrionics, and demands professionalism from his players.

Pick 25 - Patrick Cripps 192cm 88kg - East Fremantle

Proper write up to follow with Dumont but again, I had him next to go if Dumont was gone at 22. Already with Salem, Dumont and Cripps added to Mayes, Rockliffe, Redden and Rich you start to compose a very imposing and big midfield group which was the aim. I wanted competitors, hard at it guys with good character. I have got that here with Cripps. A late developer has grown to a massive 192cm midfielder now. Inside midfielder of a high regard has so much up side in his game. A good kick and decision maker, very happy getting him here.

With all the uproar in losing all those young players through trades, I seriously think the club have upgraded and have three guys who can play Round One.

Can't say I'm the most knowledgeable about the draft but I follow the publicly available footage and various bigfooty phantoms every year, so I'll pick for the druggies to keep this moving along if people are ok with that? Assuming Dice man is out of course.

DiceMan is out. Don't think anyone has taken over so go for it I say.

I'm happy for Hordor to do it, if only for the fact that he has an avatar of a yelling Ice King. :p :thumbsu:

Pick 26 - Essendon
James Battersby

Essendon obviously lack in midfield depth after some pretty good top end talent in Watson and Zaha. Although he goes against the grain being a short mid/half back he has a lot going for him. Inside and out, gets plenty of the ball and is a great kick and decision maker. Good in traffic as well, they'll be hoping he develops into an inside mid, and with his time at half back should also be handy on the link up outside.

Grockadoc i think.

Future poster of the year IMO. Well done stepping up but it will take a lot to pass the exploits of tigs2010 :p
