Richmond game....who's on Cousins?

About Cotchin - it's the same injury as last year, but on his other leg. He ran the tan every 2nd day and went cycling every other day during his holidays... pushed himself too hard.

Will end up missing half of this pre-season by the time he's fully fit. :(

I know this is a little off topic but this constant comparison (on a number of different threads) with Richmond reminds me of the comparisons 5 or so years back between the emerging Cats and Saints. Round 1 is obviously a focusing point and perhaps fitting the cliche that we play the Tigers (Saints vs Cats Rd 1 after a Nab Cup final 2004 and the pretender won both if memory serves correct).

Both had young lists sprinkled with gun players back then, not unlike now but one side clearly achieved their supposed potential, the other didn't. It had all the twists and turns of a Tom Clancy novel, in fact the eventual successful coach almost lost his job as those around him started to lose faith from a bad year before eventually the other coach was booted out after too many seasons promises unfulfilled, but in the end the team most thought would succeed didn't. A rivalry was built between the fans debating who had the better list but in the end the contest fizzled into a non event.

Interesting post, the key difference this time around is that Richmond/Carlton are both actually important teams :D

From 2004 Terry has said he's basing his list model on Geelong's (remember the whole age/premiership clock theory?)

And I think Carlton mroe resembles St Kilda as they've had more top 2 draft picks than, although with Judd and a few other factors this doesn't mean we will both follow the same paths as Saints/Cats did.

One thing is for certain - a genuine rivalry is building again, and this time it's between some BIG clubs :thumbsu:

Is it just me or does cousins look too big, especially in the arms? Being heavy isn't good for hammy's and he has had trouble.

He's always been that size, he's probaby toned down a little bit actually.

I know Coughlan has toned down because of his hammy's, so you may be right.

I am alot more worried about who will be playing on Richoman, Deledio and Cotchin than I am Cousins.

Cousins has not played for 2 years. Read that again - 2 years. He hasn't even been in a professional environment for that time.

If he has any impact in the first half of the season, I'll eat my hat.

Kane Johnson will play on Judd as a negating run with role as he did in round 1 last year.

If you guys put any of your good mids on Cousins ie: Gibbs , Murphy or Judd that'd be a win for us I think.

Cotchin will play as he is expected to resume full training after the christmas break.

A Judd who didn't have a pre-season and couldn't catch Laycock later in the year.

Judd will be odds on to take the points this time.

We wouldn't waste one of our class mids on Cousins.

It might be Carrazzo, Grigg or Bannister.

Or all three rotating on and off Cousins to test his hamstring and his match fitness...

Well obviously I beg to differ. The comparisons I see are with Stkilda and Richmond. For example, I see parallels with the way Grant Thomas ran the entire football operation, ala Greg Miller, the board was weak due to the undue influence Thomas had with Butters, again not unlike the influence that Miller had actually being on the board, the influence Thomas had on recruiting is similar to the influence Miller had and all of this resulted in the on-field destiny of StKilda and I have no doubt Richmond will mirror that.

Now compare the way Costa presides at Geelong, not unlike the respect (outside football issues aside) that Pratt has brought to Carlton. It is no coincidence that our re emergence correlates to the board stability we now have compared to the immediate post Elliot debacles and the years we spent in the wilderness are the on field manifestation of that.

It always amuses me when supporters compare playing lists as an insight into future performance. You would do well to watch the board to see what clubs are going where. Kennett is the reason the Hawks are where they are, not Buddy or Hodge, and Melbourne....well nuff said.

So expect Carlton to reach the ultimate prize well before Tigers during this round of success window, yours is closing fast (6 topline players over 30) and you still dont have the board respect and stability you need to win flags. Just look at the noises about the Cuz drafting, not interested, well we might be interested if we can con the AFL, highly unlikely to take him, rabid supporters demand you take him.....we are taking him and always were...That's how we used to run our board, not any more.

Not trying to be a smart ass but you have a bit of way to go upstairs before the club can start to perform on the field. We have done the upstairs work and now the on-field follows.

These sort of posts from bitter and deluded Richmond fans never cease to amuse me.
You can argue all you want, but given where our club is at this year, Cousins makes a lot of sense for us this year, and more sense than Judd last year.

Our young mids have come on well and Cousins adds to that, unlike Carlton who are entirely reliant on Judd staying injury free or playing without niggles. And I doubt he will have an entire year where he is not carrying something.

Cousins has the potential to be a cult hero at Richmond if he is anywhere near his best over the next couple of seasons. Judd would just do what was expected of him. He is not going to be as good as he was at WC with Kerr and Cousins at their best around him, and Carlton have no Plan B without Judd. Unlike us.

And if for some reason neither Judd not Cousins play a game in 2009, I'm certain Richmond will finish higher than Carlton. And if they both do, I'm certain we would still finish higher.

Cousins for almost nothing is a better deal than Judd for almost everything.
Have they even seen Carlton play?

Richmond beat one top eight side in the second half of the year.

Carlton beat the Dogs, Collingwood, but lost to the Swans by a kick and the Crows by two kicks.

We were one of the best finishing teams in the AFL this year in spite of our inexperience.

Yet Richmond have one of the oldest first 22 in the AFL.

They also think they have a great young backline and ruck division propped up by the 31 year old Simmonds and Pattison.

Yarran will be a better substitute for their wunderkind Cotchin than Cousins is for Judd.

Let Gibbs destroy him. One of the few players that can tag his opponent into oblivion, and become a first rate mid when he has the ball. Our most accountable midfielder by far.

Sick em' Bryce.

Gibbs - Cousins
Grigg - Deledio
Murphy - Foley
Judd - no one, let the other 3 take their opponent to let Judd roam free
Stevens - again, no one.

If Cousins is not playing well, shift Gibbs onto Lids, and Grigg on to Cousins.
Hehe rather humorous.

What amuses me the most with some Richmond supporters is that they are behaving as if they stole Cousins from under the nose of every other AFL club. They have not worked out that there was a reason why Cousins was overlooked by 15 AFL clubs, including clubs who would consider their premiership window to be open. There is going to be major bloodletting when it doesn't work out as they expected.

Hehe rather humorous.

What is even more humourous is your pathetic excuse of a football club whose supporters have endured decades of "YELLOW & BLEAK" & will continue to do so.

Just because you think that you have secured the recruit of the year .......... think again as 14 other clubs passed him up for a very good reason.
All the Tigers have recruited in the PSD is a self confessed drug addict that NO ONE else wanted !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have a wonderfull off season

I don't think that's "more humourous".
Maybe you can teach Sticks some English...
Now that would be humourous.

what would be even more humourous if you got a yellow & bleak card from one of the mods.

What is your obsession with the Carlton board !!!!!!!!!

Ahh it must be envy :D

If your mods are even half reasonable, then I don't have anything to worry about.
And no obsession with the board, merely board. Um, bored...
Hehe.

Is this humorous?

  • Jason Torney & draft picks #2(originally pick three), #18 and #32 traded for Kane Johnson.
  • Tambling drafted with pick four.
  • Chris Judd and pick 46 were traded for Kennedy (a former pick 4) plus picks 3 & 20.
Richmond used more top 20 picks (plus a senior player) to sign Johnson and Tambling than it took for Carlton to sign Judd and Armfield.

Thank God Richmond evened the ledger after drafting the 31 year old Cousins.

Now where's nikolasmia who started this brilliant thread? :thumbsu:

Cousin's is the least of Carlton's worries. As someone said above, there is a perfectly legitemant reason why 15 AFL clubs don't want Cousin's. He'll have minimal impact on the game!

Oh Richmond supporters, you pathetic group of ferals grasping for any hope of seeing better days. After 28 years to see a flag and 2 dissapointing finals appearances you are now talking finals on the back of a 31 year old, washed up, drug addict who has not played for almost 1.5 years. hehehehehe... how funny

Facts

1. Round 1 Jackson played on Judd not Johnson
2. Cousins has not played for 1.5 years and will be like Carey when he got back ..a nothing. Any talk of comparing Cousins to Judd is a absolute joke. Juddy is 6 years younger and does not have a drug infested and polluted body or a chronic hamstring problem.

Mark my words..Cousins will not play more than 4 - 5 games next year and will be out injured constantly or lacking form ...but do not despair Tigers supporters he might help Coburg to a finals spot in the VFL.

I would like to second the comments made earlier to put into those thick feral, yellow and bleak supporters. 15 clubs passed on him because they knew he was damaged goods and finished. I bet he will not make it to round 1 before some incident and I hope he takes a young tiger player with him...

Who thinks Nathan Brown will become Cousins new buddy ??? :D

Comparing Judd to Cousins. Even better.

well if the reaction from your supporter base is to go by id say you guys landed gary ablett jnr.

your trying to act all modest ... but remember the bloke has been out the game for almost 2 years , that is enough to have you worry about if his going to make it. If i were you i would not have this image that cousins will come in and pick up 30 possies and 3 goals.
