Melbourne were pretty impressive in their win against the Dogs last week. Just how impressive remains a little to be seen as there is no doubt the Dogs were undermanned and their sorry tale was further highlighted when it was revealed that they don't have enough players to put a side together for this weeks match. What you can say about the Demons is that their team does bat deep and their top talent is about as good as there is. In no particular order, Birch, Hanks, Bennan, Mithen, Hore, Pearce, Zanker and Paxman in the one side is a scary proposition especially if they click at once and they are genuine flag contenders. They play a possession style of game and are happy to chip it around until they find a hole and their subsequent ball movement is as good as it gets in the AFLW.

Richmond was equally as impressive against the Saints and, like the Demons, just how much we have improved remains to be seen as the Saints were also undermanned. Still, you can only play the team presented to you and there is no doubt that we put the Saints to the sword from the second quarter on. I am not sure that would have been the case last year. Like the Demons, we used the corridor at every opportunity and our pressure game was off the charts. Coming through the middle also created many scoring chances within 30m from goal in good angles. The result was a 10.1 score line.

This is going to be a possession vs territory game. Melbourne will want to keep possession while Richmond's style replicated its men's, the high octane, turnover based pressure game that has served the club well in recent times and one which is Ryan Ferguson

knows well. The loss of Kelly, D'Arcy and Shevlin will have an impact as they have all been recruited with our game style in mind and all featured prominantly in last weeks win. Yassir also had an impact as the small pressure forward and her loss this week will present a great opportunity for the likes of Jacques and Dargan to showcase their own improvement in 2022. The team needs it.

Monique Conti will no doubt be tagged and it will be a test for her. The talk is that Tyla Hanks may run with her and it will be on the Tigers improved midfield to step up and help Mon out and do a bit of their own damage. How well the likes of Brancatisano, Burchell , Dempsey and newcomer MacDonald paly in this game will have a big influence on the game. The Tigers will need to have a plan to quieten the trio of Paxman, Zanker and Hore. Paxman was quiet last week after a heavy knock and smashed us last year and we can't let her run and carry the ball as she usually does.

This is a game to be excited about. Both teams have significant outs. If we can pressure Melbourne to turn the ball over I expect it to be a close affair. If we get over the line it will be the Tigers greatest win since coming into the competition. If Melbourne win it will be just another game towards the 2022 flag. On the basis that Richmond should be that little bit hungrier for the win I am tipping a huge upset with Richmond coming away with the chocolates by 7 points.

Melbourne are a really good side so I don’t think we will win unless Conti and the rest of our midfield goes nuts against their midfield.

If we can at least get close and be competitive with this match and the next match against Fremantle, then that would already be an improvement on last year for us.

I’m not sure if the works have finished but if that’s out of the way you would think a sell out would be around 2-3 thousand with the official capacity pre covid being around 5000.

Football Ground Crush Endangers Big Crowd

A crowd of more than 46,000 at the Richmond-Carlton football match yesterday burst through the picket fence and spread around the playing area of the Richmond ground, which is designed to hold no more than 40,000. Melbourne Cricket Ground, which will hold more than 90,000, was vacant for the day.

The holiday good humor of the vast crowd, packed into the Richmond ground averted a situation in which many people must have suffered serious injury.

Turnstile attendance figures were 46,000, but several thousand more came in when the gates were opened, and many more were turned away.
One girl was injured, and many other people were crushed in a stampede to get into the outer ground when the gates opened.
The girl injured was Lorna Powell, 16, of Jessie-street Richmond. She was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital and treated for an injured leg.
Long before the match began, long queues and packed trains and trams showed that the crowd would be beyond the capacity of the ground.
Twenty minutes before the game commenced, the huge crowd surged over a broken fence into the playing area.

About 2 p.m., the turnstiles were closed, but almost immediately Health Commission officials ordered all gates to be thrown open.

There seemed just as many people anxious to leave the packed embankments as there were still attempting to gain entry. The gates appeared likely to collapse.


Police help a woman over the boundary fence as the crowd surges forward.

When the gates were opened thousands of people poured through them and struggled for places in the already crowded grounds.

Danger first threatened near the Punt-road goals before the players appeared on the field.
The packed crowd made a series of dangerous surges down the steep embankment and the fence bulged several times before a gateway finally burst open.
Police and ambulance men rushed to the spot, and stretchers were used to carry injured and shocked spectators to the cricket club stand.
Most people who had got over the fence or through the gap showed no inclination to rush other reserves, but police took matters into their own hands, and directed many of them to the cricket club enclosure.
All through the first half of the game this point, and later on, the front of the football club reserve further around represented possible danger.

As the crush increased, the crowd on the area became greater, but it spread out around the boundary, and at no time interfered with play.

Ambulance men later reported it was one of their worst days at any football game.
More than 43 people were carried to the ambulance room, most of them on stretchers. In addition 20 others were treated on the edge of the ground.

Ambulance Officer, W. McKean, of the St. John’s Ambulance, said he had 12 ambulance men, six cadets and one nurse fully occupied. He commented on the few cases of hysteria, something he was most frightened of when the crush was at its worst.
There were many other danger points around and outside the ground during the afternoon.
A bar building at the Richmond end must have had 200 on its roof all the afternoon but it stood up to the strain.
Every tree and vantage point outside the ground was filled to overflowing.
Several small boys made their month’s pocket money in a few minutes by carrying ladders around outside the ground and charging customers who wanted tree-top perches.

As the final siren sounded thousands of people rushed the playing arena, the police giving up the hopeless task of holding them back.
There were no unpleasant episodes, the crowd retaining its great humor all day. Umpire Merrington got a great reception as he left the ground.
Spectators severely criticized the Victorian Football League for not having arranged a better draw for the King’s Birthday holiday. The general feeling was that such a star game, which always draws a big crowd when the “Tigers” meet the Dark Blues, should have been staged at the Carlton ground which can accommodate a big holiday crowd. The Richmond ground, because of its restricted accommodation, was a poor choice for such a game on such a day. Alternatively, as the teams meet only once this season, the game should have been played on the Melbourne Cricket Ground – a neutral arena.
Yesterday confusion was not confined to the playing arena. The Melbourne City Council had made few arrangements to park thousands of cars which had filled the park round the Richmond ground as far west as the M.C.G.
At the lower entrance, where there was much congestion, only one officer was on duty to collect parking fees. A second entry into the park was blocked by a chain.

Traffic conditions were chaotic outside the ground and along adjacent street for more than an hour after the game ended. There seemed to be too few trams to take the huge crowd away.

A bar building at the Richmond end must have had 200 on its roof all the afternoon but it stood up to the strain.

It has to be remembered that both Richmond and Carlton missed the finals is 1948 (Richmond by just half a game and held a massive % advantage over all but the top side). Carlton and Richmond were only scheduled to play each other once in 1949, such was the home ground advantage in those days, the Tiges were loathe to give it up.

By Round 9 - Carlton and Richmond were first and second on the ladder. We had won 8 of 9 games. Richmond led at each change by 1pt, then 5pts , then 7pts - however Richmond failed to get the chocolates that day by 15 pts.

The next week, at Punt Rd again, the mighty Jack Dyer equaled Gordon Coventry's games record of 306 games. We went down again, but only by 3pts!!!!

In fact we slumped from that point on in 1949, losing to Melbourne, then Footescray, we beat perenial loser Hawthorn, then lost to North, Stkilda and Essendon - dropping as low as 8th, but finished 6th. Let there be no OMEN in this please!

In fact that historic game started a slump of epic proportions and was the start of a pretty bleak era, not seeing finals again until 1967!

Richmond has made five changes for tomorrow night’s sell-out clash against Melbourne at the Swinburne Centre.

The Tigers will welcome back inaugural players Kodi Jacques, Laura McClelland and Sarah Sansonetti while the Club’s most recent recruit Meg Macdonald has been selected for her debut.

Energetic forward/midfielder Sarah Dargan has also been named for her first game of the season.

Jacques who was an emergency last week will offer the Tigers pressure and football nous up forward and through the midfield, while McClelland has an ability to play across a number of positions.

Macdonald has played most of her football across half back but won the eyes of Richmond recruiters for her performances as an inside midfielder at VFLW level last season.

Sansonetti has been used mainly in defence across her 9 game AFLW career and can also play on the wing.

The inclusions will replace Emelia Yassir (concussion), Poppy Kelly (knee) and Maddie Shevlin (AFL Health and Safety Protocols) who have each been ruled out after impressing in their club debuts last week.

Experienced defender Sarah D’Arcy and livewire Tayla Stahl will also miss the match due to AFL Health and Safety Protocols.

Yet to debut draftee Ingrid Houtsma has been named as an emergency along with top-up player Akayla Peterson.

Peterson won Carlton’s VFLW best and fairest in 2021 after joining the club from Cairns Saints where she was a dual premiership player.

Tomorrow night’s game will be the AFLW Tigers’ first match under lights at the Swinburne Centre and just the second time the Club has met Melbourne in the competition.

Richmond put in a spirited performance against the finals bound Dees in the corresponding game last year but will be eager to improve on the 28-point loss suffered at Casey Fields.

Melbourne and the Tigers both recorded comfortable victories on the weekend, with the Demons doing no harm to their heavily fancied top four claims.

Friday night’s game starts at 7.10pm and will be broadcast live on FOX FOOTY and Kayo.
