Tippett was an excellent mark, very hard to stop, a genuine goal kicker and a great ruck. He was a weapon for us, from just his second season.

Jenkins was a crumber and kicked lots of goals but was bad under pressure, couldn't pack mark and was a terrible ruck

it's insane that you'd even have to explain that to a crows supporter. When JJ was criticised as being a crap KPF the standard excuse for him was that he wasn't and instead was a tall flanker. He was the very definition of a downhill skier, as soon as he had to play in front and win his own ball he was all but useless.

Seems I’m clearly overrating JJ. Personally, I thought he was criminally underrated by our fan base. I thought his work rate to get into scoring positions was elite, and he did it consistently. Conversely, I remember Tippett as a bloke with huge potential that never got to the heights he should have.

Tippett was never quite the same after that run of concussions he had late in his time with us.
Had a purple patch early in Sydney, which used to make the commentators fap “oh it’s another case of Sydney bringing out the best in a player”.

Which was irritating because it’s not like he hadn’t reached that level with us.

So much JJ hate. I just don’t get it. His stats make him one of our most successful forwards the AFC has had. His work rate to get into good scoring positions made him the complete opposite of a downhill skier. Consistently outworked and outsmarted his opponent to kick goals.

Lance Franklin is a terrible pack mark and ruckman. Does that make him a terrible forward. JJ had his one-wood and he used it with great impact as a vital cog in our 2017-era. Kurt Tippett is a merely a stain on our history who played one good final in 2012?

Both are true imho - Jenkins was better than he was rated on here, and Tippett was better than Jenkins.
Altho, as you seem to accept, they did not have similar strengths and so not straight forward to compare.

Adding a special couple of :oops::drunk: for Sanders - probably the other Bf-er who had similar sustained disdain for JJ's football over the journey. Just such a lazy son of a beach. Nice fella though.

I was mostly in 2 minds on him, but there was a piece of play that ultimately summed him up and was the final straw for me. Ball up about 40m out from goal, JJ is standing in front of his man 20m out between the stoppage and goal. One of our blokes wins possession in the contest and does what we always did, hacks it forward. It hits JJ's opponent uncontested on the chest without him having to move. JJ could have provided a contest if he wasn't already 10m goal side and still running towards goal.

I don't hate him, he was what he was and no, he only went well when we were slingshotting fast from defence or our mids were well on top. As soon as the ball was arriving dirty he was an abject liability. Refused to play in front and work to win contests. All sizzle, no steak.

ah the 'glory' days of our '2017-era'. Right up there with the fabled St Kilda streak.

The last two games his highlights have been similar to those we saw of his play at U18 level. He is a weapon we can use to influence the game where and when it’s needed. It looks like he’s starting to believe in himself. With more experience he’ll take it upon himself to put himself in positions to win us games when on the line.

Yeah Jenkins is totally like Buddy. ****ing hell.

It's pretty clear that Nicks values hard work. He values talent too but doesn't want to gift games to more talented players just because. He wants them to earn the right to play. It'll hold us in good stead long term.

We've always prioritised triers over talent and it's never paid off.

The difference now is we've acquired a few blokes who's talent levels transcend our capacity to **** it up. And watch us present them as proof of the method working.

And what's the use of having talent if you go half arse ;) Case in point Thilthorpe was doing this ;)

no it won't. That's the exact philosophy that we've run with for the past 20 years. Smith and Milera haven't earned the right to play based upon performance. Kids need sustained performance in the 2s backed up with flawless senior form. Whereas our 'experienced' guys can serve up crap for months on end. It's this that holds us back, no selection integrity or pressure on seniors to perform at their peak.

All clubs play out of form or even cooked senior players way too long, we aren't the first and won't be the last club to do this. Guess it's loyalty shown to senior players.

Its difficult to reach those heights when you can't fit your head through a doorway.

I never said he was a coward, clearly it was just his application which can be fixed with most of last year playing in the SANFL and another week of tough love this year.

All down to that week one selection. Dude basically didn't want to play football until that.
