Rioli or Selwood?

According to HP "A Cyril Rioli wank is worth 10 regular wanks." :thumbsu:

Also according to a lot of Geelong supporters winning a lot of roster games is more important than winning the one game that counts.

The amount of Geelong supporters who puff their chests out about winning so many games is very funny.

I know if the Hawks won as many games as Geelong but failed when it mattered most I would be livid.

Geelong supporters just seem to accept it.

On the op Selwood is a gun but this Rioli kid is also something special.

yes rioli might become a great player

but selwood is on his way to being better then just great.

I'm a big Selwood fan, but I don't think he has the attributes to 'being better than just great' as you put it.

The best of the best have a skill that sets them apart. This is what separates the Abletts from the Bartels, or the Judd2006s from the Peter Burgoyne2006s.

Selwood lacks such a unique skill. A good side step, a raking kick, pace to burn, these are the assets that make the truly great players.

And I just realised Rioli has all of the above.

Because after 49 AFL games and being 20, we have defently seen the best of what this young superstar can do...

It's like Daniel Rich and Jack Watts.

Rich will be better now, he comes in with an AFL body, etc. Watts will probably end up the better player, has more upside and growth in him.

Greg Williams says hi....

The gap has narrowed somewhat, it will narrow even further by the end of the season.

Good as Joel is, he has little or no improvement left in him.

If you were marching with 99 other people and they marched left foot first and you marched right foot first...I suspect you would be berating the other 99 for being out of step with you!

Clearly you don't rate the ability to find the ball 25+ times a game in a contest.

Yes I rate that, but it isn't really a unique skill.

Take Nick Dal Santo for example. He's in a rare patch of consistency at the moment, and you wonder for how long he can keep it up. I'd have to say that he's a chance to sustain it because he has such a lovely sidestep and a great left foot. If he didn't have those two attributes, it would take a lot more effort and application rather than just pure class.

I love the way you make these sweeping, grandiose pronouncements of fact based on your own bias! How the **** do know that??!! He's 20 ffs...
There is more likelihood of an indigenous goalsneak fading out of the picture than Selwood. Personally I don't think he will because he think his work ethic is excellent. I hope he continues to improve because the game will be better for it and I enjoy watching him even when he plays well against us, but your manic obsession with Rioli (and Hodge) is pathologically perverse.

I don't see where the improvement will come. He'll never be quick, or an elite kick. He already has the engine and is already racking up lots of possessions per game. He won't get tougher, he's about as big as he will get. He won't get any smarter, he's a smart footballer, but that probably won't improve a hell of a lot either.

Are you talking to me, or Galileo?

C'mon Podgy...repeat after me..."Selwood is a gun who has produced consistently since his entry to the game. He has played maybe 2 so so games in 49. He will be AA many times and the skills he has will not diminish because he finds his own footy against the best day in day out. His improvement will come by experience. He has set himself to kick more goals and become harder still. I am afraid of what he is capable of..."

I agree with the goalkicking bit. Can I say he reminds me of Sam Mitchell? Or is that a troll?

Yes, I accept that possibility too. Barring injury he will be the better player. Selwood came in very AFL-ready. Rioli still has a lot of upside and has been hailed as the most exciting player in the game.

IIRC, didn't Selwood only play 3 games the year before he was drafted before missing most the season with a knee injury? Doesn't sound too AFL ready to me.

True, but Selwood is still that far in front it's not funny. Maybe you should create a few aliases and try to narrow the gap some more.

Like Stewart Dew in a McDonalds checkout...you are an immovable object!
I'm out...(checks the stats on way out...hmmm still running about 80% Selwood over Rioli :thumbsu: )

AFL ready when he came in, I mean. Some players just seem to be ready made and can find the ball from Day One.

I won't compare Selwood to Dalziell, but Dalziell is one example of a player who just slots in to senior footy and is playing at his maximum or close to it, from Day One.

I pose a question to all you narrow minded posters out there, 3 or 4 years ago if someone was to compare Ablett Jr to Chris Judd in a Poll like this what would have to response been? Im not saying Rioli will ever get to Ablett Jnr standard even though I think he has to talent to reach a similar level and Im not saying that he will ever be better than Selwood but I think too many posters are too quick to say that there is absolutely no chance that Rioli can ever be better.. How do you know that this is not going to happen, you would never have thought that Ablett Jnr would ever be as good as Judd and looked what happened..

Based on potential I would say Rioli has every chance of being as good as Selwood one day, he is definitely one of the most naturally gifted footballers I have ever seen, no doubt that Selwood has him covered to this point and may well have him covered throughout their careers but it is ridiculous to give Rioli no chance like most of you have!
