Very out of character, in fact verging on downright unprofessional.
It's one of the clearest signs I've seen that Nisbett is losing it. What does it achieve exactly? Where does it leave the club if trade negotiations go nowhere? How does it make any teammates who are close to him feel about the club??
Fans can vent, but any business owner knows that the only sensible option in this situation is to stay classy and take the high road however betrayed you might feel- if for no other reason because other employees see how you react.
Honestly its also a bit rich for west coast to be acting as though they stuck by Rioli out of the goodness of their heart. He's not a stray puppy who Nisbett took home from the pound, they backed him for the same reason there is trade interest in him- because he's serious football talent who from his first game onwards showed he can play well at AFL level, and has a major upside justifying the investment.
I also have far more sympathy for someone in Rioli's shoes making a purely financially motivated decision than an elite player his age who has been in the system on big money since they were 18, because the stakes are way way higher for him.
Rioli has probably got another 3-4 years of prime football left in him, and he's at a point where he could have a decent 150 game career and earn some solid coin, but also at a point where he's one serious knee injury away from seeing it all evaporate.
And I hope I'm wrong but given his off field idiocy he doesn't strike me as a guy with a glittering post football career waiting for him. He's got a young family to provide for and for a 27 year old who came up through the SANFL and has spent two years suspended the difference, eg, a few hundred k and security of a longer contract might make to his future situation is huge. If you put yourself in his shoes it would be an incredibly brave call to pass on a better offer at this point.
Maybe it was different 20 years ago but in the current environment, where football clubs are clearly businesses and players are commodities who are discarded when they aren't worth anything, noone should ever criticise a player for looking out for themselves. Loyalty is all well and good but loyalty doesn't pay your mortgage.
It struck me as an out of touch, arrogant CEO realising he didn't know everything he thought he did and not liking it.
Nisbett, JSchofield, RioliCan we package Nisbett into the trade somehow? Ill even take 4th round for Rioli if they take him as steak knives.
Mid 3rd round is when clubs start passingHe's worth more but hard to see how we don't get anything but a third rounder for him.
Nisbett, JSchofield, Rioli
For
Ken, Kochie, Giorgiadis, Port 1st this year and 1st next year.
Port board is doing that in a heartbeat
we lose big time thereNisbett, JSchofield, Rioli

Simply setting the negotiating environment - thats professional.Very out of character, in fact verging on downright unprofessional.

Nah, Ken would be a good coach of the WAFL side, and Kochie can replace Karl Langdon doing the on ground announcing.we lose big time there

I agree it's the best thing Nisbett has said in years. It's also the only useful thing he has said in years. I was even dissapointed in his 'sorry we are so shit' output late in the season.Simply setting the negotiating environment - thats professional.
Daniel Cherny is a dick with little understanding of why West Coast might be upset
No clue
And he’s assuming we get a pick in the 20’s which is ok but it’s by no means a high end pick
It doesn't matter that Rioli nominated Port. Rioli is going to learn that nominating a club means nothing these days. He will go PSD. Ports going to have to give 2nd rnd pick. We owe Rioli nothing.
The only way I can see us going easy on this trade is if Mitch Geordiades wants to come home. Then we would work Rioli into a trade to make it work out
I'm pissed off at the situation but if we get Mitch Geordiades it would all be pretty happy with that.
Players occasionally make decisions that clubs are disappointed by and both carry on professionally. I don't think anyone can begrudge someone looking to make things better for their family. The tone of Nisbett's statement doesn't suggest to me that he's lost his marbles but that West Coast are not happy with how Junior went about things.Very out of character, in fact verging on downright unprofessional.

I'm sure Eagles would now be going pretty hard to bring Mitch Geordiades home. Hopefully they make it work out.Forcing to the PSD benefits no one. He'll get there
The tone of it essentially is "why are you complaining, you're getting a pick"What part of what he said is wrong?
The questioning of us blowing up about it. The blow up is understandable and fair. What part of what he said is wrong?
