Game Day Rnd 1 - Carlton v Richmond Game Day Discussion & Autopsy

Murph was hurt and the rest didn't lift - those 5-6 clearances won them the game - that has to be looked at very closely at training I suspect.
They won some crucial hitouts but also had players being cleaner and faster at ground level during that time. They seemed to have it pretty worked out, with Murph being hurt they seemed to be blocking Cripps successfully and the other boys just couldn't quite do enough. At least they fought on though.

I'll add that Gibbs seemed to lift and do a fair bit overall but for his skill level his handballs can be a bit errant sometimes.

And despite that when it really mattered they went on holiday, Carlton will not win a GF with Murphy and Gibbs in the team. They have consistently done it all through their careers.
Have a ****ing kit kat will ya!

JGM and Weitering in the back half could be a wonderful spine for years to come.
When they picked JGM I was over the moon... I watched a couple of his games and he was very impressive.

Shut out Schache in the one game he played on him.

That is true enough. I'll be happy no matter where within that range we finish, so long as we continue to play a modern game with a focus firmly on the long term plan.

That and we finish at least 1 place higher than *

The issue was and still is forward line. Win all the ball you like but if you don't have a decent forward line you'll struggle to win games.

If we have a gun forward we win 6-10 games. If we have two we win 11-14.

But we don't.

It's startling after 7? Years in the system Cas still has that poor ball drop

We have a gun coach I think now we need to add cattle

18 Carlton players with 70% disposal efficiency or better, and only 1 below 60%. Very un-Carlton like.

Bugger! Was barracking out loud for your boys.

I'm guessing most of the teams just rubbed out all those pencilled-in wins against Carlton.

You can see it all there. Sometimes the ball movement from defence was as good as any
afl team. That time Kruser held on to the ball and dummied and dodged until he handballed
just at the right time and the passage that followed was sensational, and the best of the night.

Weitering - FMD!

Love it that Matty Wright bagged 3.

Looking good going forward.

Cracking game of footy tonight. Went along with a few of the Blues supporting family. Blues fans would be proud of the effort and endeavour.

While they had a couple of their best out, the Tigers look like a bottom eight side. Will not make so much as a slight dent in September - if they win enough games to make it that is.

Casboult really needs to address his kicking. Has a great set of hands but FMD how many shots does he miss? The one up the Punt Rd end where he tried a banana and put it out on the full, and the one up the City End directly in front to extend the Carlton lead with all the momentum....Christ. He nails those two relatively easy shots and the Blues win. Have said it a thousand times and I'll say it again - he does not drop the ball correctly onto his boot....a mile too high. He needs to guide it down....and why nobody has picked up on this at training, I'll never know.

I have to say, I'm impressed by the Blues tonight. The team showed real heart and I think a lot of people may have underestimated the Blues this year (admittedly myself included). Almost pulled of an upset tonight. There is a lot of positives to take out of this match for you guys. Will be interesting to see how you go this year.

I really like our style of play. They run hard all night and never gave up and was appreciated by all Carlton supporters around me. We should have won but the mistakes obviously cost us. Weitering.... Wow so good. Cripps..... Unbelievable. Cant wait for Mr Plow to be fit. Dissapointed in Buckleys performance. Byrne has to play next week.

I liked the footage of Wright from last year. He looks to be a really good player. Pity for your mob that he was forced out because of the Menzel trade (I think that we will win that one just quietly :))

Great effort tonight. Not surprised Cripps and Murph tired. Midfield can't expect to do as well when two of its best players are out. Our midfield was huge tonight though, all things considered. Docherty was a driving force off the flank - awesome game.

We know Cas can mark, we know he's not a great set shot. It begs the question, why don't we have players running past for the handball? Noticed he had space around him a couple of times tonight that someone could have run through. Nothing to lose? .. Guessing they want to back him in, but perhaps they just need to accept the reality and work it to our advantage in a different way?

Lambert had a great final qtr and Rance killed us all night.

White's two clearances that resulted in goals hurt. It's little things that ended up killing us, but we're on the right path.
So glad we have Bolton! (Cripps and Weitering!)

Happy with the effort. The better side on the night, but not good enough to put them away.

The best thing that I liked about the game tonight... was that none of the boys took a step back in the unsociable football department. When the flag needed to be flown, they were in there flying it.

Boekhorst's kicking is a thing of beauty too.

BB did seem hesitant in some contests where he could have gone harder but I'm unsure if it's related to safety or him trying to think his way through it. He does some decent stuff in close to make me think he's not exactly a fraidy cat. Will be interesting watching over the next few games.

Dre obviously is soft, but you take the good with the bad with him.

I honestly don't think Dre is soft, it can be more a casual/laconic thing with regards to his application and attitude.

Can't afford to drop or trade him giving he is giving us around 2 Sodas a game.

Now what to do with Casboult ? I've said for two weeks I was worried about him but was pooh poohed by a few other regular posters, but clearly Houston we have a problem with him now.

Is there any chance we can bring in Jaksch and play him as another mobile tall forward ?

If you were Murph or Cripps or BB, you'd be reluctant to kick the pill to Casboult right now.

I love Casboult. I really do, he has grabs like nobody else.

But if we're serious - this is his last year.
Agree KnaveyBlue. Love the big lad and his big mitts.
Overhead, he is mostly poetry in motion.
Mystifying for someone who has such deft hands, that he seemingly has so little feel for how to hold a footy and kick truly.
Wayne Carey picked up on Levi's ball holding technique and hand positioning (or lack thereof) after Casboult's 1st missed goal attempt.
Isn't that kind of stuff football 101? Hope that Levi can turn his insipid goal kicking tally around.
Speaks volumes that I had more confidence in Weitering and his kicking tonight. What a poised and polished debut. Kid's a gem.

Agreed. It's an indictment on our development of him for years and also not having any upward pressure from the northern blues to drive him. It's also an indictment on him for not being more driven to improve it himself.
On a positive note, I've just had a look at the northern blues thread and it seems we may not be without options for too much longer.
I suspect if Cas doesn't continue what was an upward curve last year he may be at another club next year. SOS will be looking for more bargaining chips come trade time.
I hope it doesn't come to that.

The Casboult thing is difficult. I don't think after so long his kicking can ever be truly made good or even consistently decent, but he's a big, strong hard body that can mark strongly and he has a terrific work rate and tank.

With that in mind, right now we don't have too many options to replace him.
