Trimming that side by 4

Plowman Jones Simmo
Doc Weitering Newman

Walsh Ed Fisher
Krooz Cripps Murphy

Martin Levi Gibbons
Betts TDK McGovern

SPS, Willo, Jack, Setters

List of contenders, Newnes, Cuners, Philp, LOB, Dow, Kennedy

No consideration at this stage, Marchbank, Polson

Lucky to remain, McGovern
Unlucky, Dow

A must, all of TDK, Levi and Krooz, in the side

I reckon Dow plays - he did very well on the outside just needs to lower his eyes maybe Willo is kept back for a few games...I too prefer to play three talls in forward line to keep Richmond defenders honest.

West Coast and Richmond don't have anything to prove in the Marsh series.
I thought we might have really gone hard for 4 quarters against Brisbane to really focus in against Richmond for round 1.

Nobody proves anything in the Marsh series. Can be as good or as bad as you like, what matters is what you do in the real thing.

Quietly confident the coaches are more than satisfied with our preseason to date, and are doing exactly what they feel needs to be done to have us ready to come out guns blazing in round one.

Fair call. I reckon he is the ultimate wingman though..can be helping out in defence one minute then shooting for goal the next. Gets up and down the ground better than just about anyone so would be a strength for us.

if only we had two..

I like the idea of Martin on the other wing with Walsh. Two very skillful, highly competitive and hard working players. They both get up and down the ground effortlessly to provide support in defence when needed and both are dangerous in attack. Martin in particular creates opportunities with his disposals. Also we will need that level of skill in transition through the middle.

Absolutely!!

So when we were essentially running with a core strategy of senior bodies in pivotal roles, how would you describe the football we played for that first half?

Then Teague shuffled the magnets and handed the majority of those pivotal roles to our youth

Martin, Murphy played just over 2 qtrs, Cripps 3, Ed relaxed his tag on Neale, youth in the guts
Would describe it as once again disappointing that too much is left to too few (Cripps Murphy Kruezer Ed ) .
Clearly the coach would have been hoping for a better response when he shuffled the younger players into the pivotal roles .
The youth tag is done time for some of these younger players to step up .

That't the mentality that needs to be adopted by the players in order for them to start to progress, but as coaches/spectators/fans, it's still important to understand that there's going to be a marked difference between a 30yo former Pick 1 and captain, and a 20yo being asked to take more responsibility.

I agree , my thoughts are directed at the 4th and 5th year players of which we have a number in the side and are past the 20yr old bracket now .

If P. Dow plays then B. Door needs to present to give him something to hit.

Some of his disposals were very good- I think teh bigger issue with him is picking the right target - he could have spotted up players who had run into space - but went too often into contests...eg Eddie's first goal Dow kicked to SOJ who had a 2 on 1 leaving Eddie behind - ball bounced his way and score- however Murphy Martin had gut run into clear space in forward fifty- it was actually the easier kick for an uncontested mark - just one example.

Maybe, but take the number 1 ruck and the 3 most experienced midfielders out of any mid table side and the output more than likely would be similar

I want martin to play that michael walters 65/35 forward/midfield role. Walsh would be great on a wing but he'd be great anywhere in the midfield.

My concern is that of the young players on our list, the least suited to playing on the wing is setterfield. To me he's a bonafide inside mid that has limited ability to hurt the opponent on the outside. We need to get him inside the contest and murphy out on the wing.

Not sure they’re competing for the same spot. A fit Gov is clearly in our best forward 6. We need to replace Harry and Charlie. TDK probably gives us a better option than who would otherwise get that spot.

HF: Martin, Levi, Jack
FF: Betts, ..., Gov

TDK is still too raw and Teague said as much in his interview.

In your scenario above we'd just go a bit smaller and add another runner to that last spot and Levi/JSOS/Gov will need to provide the aerial presence.

The team that will play against Richmond:

Plowman Jones Simpson
Docherty Weitering Newman
Walsh Cripps Newnes
Martin Casboult Gibbons
Betts McGovern Silvagni

Kreuzer ECurnow Murphy

Dow Setterfield Fisher SPS

TDK won't play
Cuningham and Williamson unlikely to be selected

What we need to happen in order to play finals:

Williamson displaces Newman
LOB displaces Newnes
Cuningham focuses his way back in
McKay gets healthy
Charlie gets healthy
Kemp gets healthy to support Cripps as the second inside mid (since Setterfield doesn't seem like the guy and Stocker is out of favour)

Agree with your predicted rd 1 team...everything points to that being the team and i like it given we can't pick McKay or Curnow. It looks like a very competitive team.

Disagree though on your assertion that those things 'need' to happen in order for us to play finals. Just too early to tell what will happen and maybe some of the guys in the team lift to a new standard.

Eg
  • Newman has been rock solid...i don't think Willo 'needs' to replace him. There could be a spot in the 22 for both in future with Willo taking Simmo's spot.
  • We'd all love Cunners to reach his potential but it just might not happen...and that's ok if guys like Martin/Gibbons/Fish/Newnes etc play well and to their abilities. Hopefully next year we get Papley and he is a similar player to Cunners but with a far better, proven output.
  • Kemp is a first year player coming off a serious injury...he might not get up to speed for a few years. Setters has been poor this pre-season but showed some very promising glimpses last year...let's not forget he too has not played much footy after doing his ACL and other injuries. He could still become the guy to assist Cripps. It could also be argued that Ed is our second inside mid. Gibbons & Newnes help give us some bigger mature bodies to balance out Fish/Walsh/Martin/Dow types.

Kennedy at full forward?

Marsh series you can play anywhere between 24 to 28 players, play some guys who are upper echelon for a half then put them in the rack and experiment with newer/younger players in different positions/combinations and you're not risking losing the 4 points.

I suspect we planned to do a lot of that and prioritized that over winning the full 0 points on offer. Two years ago we went 2-0 in the preseason...then 2-20 for the real stuff.

Now, we consolidate it down to the first 22 (or as close as pending injury) 4 full quarters, capped rotations, best players in their ideal position. Keep what experiments that worked in the back pocket if need be and discard what didn't.
