have no idea how you manage under the pressure........

I like the team, however i find it concerning how we have some of our younger top end talent (e.g; dow, obrien, kennedy) etc not able to break into the team. These blokes soon enough need to step up and replace the ageing guys like murph, simmo, ed etc if we want to continually improve, otherwise the draft picks start looking doubtful.

Literally May

This is where they will need help in the form of midfield pressure in transition, which our midfield seems primed to allow to happen with Gibbons and Newnes bottling and coughing up the ball on the regular.

Smith will take him. I initially read the next part as you referring to Jack, but apparently you'd just going full parochial in a legitimate pre-match analysis?

Jetta will be on Martin, Betts is not the player he used to be, and Rivers will get the role on him to start with, and he'll negate Eddie's ability to mark the high ball on the quick counter, especially with Lever floating around.

They'll only move Salem or Jetta onto him if that plan fails. The fact that you haven't identified that Cuningham and Gibbons will be regularly rotating into the midfield shows me you're severely underestimating how shallow our outside mifield and small forward situation is.

They won't: they'll be watching the Richmond game where they forced him to try and win the game by himself because no one else in the midfield can stand up to physical pressure in numbers unless they throw Jack in there.

Cripps had 31 touches and we got smacked.

Are you suggesting Petracca will be a starting midfielder, or that Jack will be a starting defender? The former is unlikely, and the latter is ludicrous.

We also should not be operating with two defensive tags in midfield, and I wouldn't put Jack onto Petracca, I'd put him on Oliver.

What span of time where we continuously fu** this up and I continuously point out an obvious alternative plan is acceptable? A year? Two? Five?

I mean he was covering territory, but our system last year expected different things of the wing role, and that was reflected in Setterfield and O'Brien's possession numbers. Every time they were given the opportunity to transition the ball, I think they performed to the standard required.

Gibbons and Newnes looked like VFL footballers against Richmond, and while they might have hit 'effort' KPIs, I would argue that Gibbons can't do anything when he gets to contests, and that Newnes has perfected how to pad his numbers without accomplishing anything.

Newman is an elite suburban footballer, not an average AFL player.

I just want them to be treated equally when it comes to their decision making and how their off-the-ball runs are honoured in the team. I don't think that's happening, and I think the issue isn't experience or endurance, I think it's them being 20 and not being as demanding for the possession. To then compound the issue by dropping them - from someone who is modelling himself as a teacher and positive communicator - is a bit strange.

Coaches would give their riches for the amount of time they've just had to invest in the talented youngsters. What the fu** do we have to show for 3 months extra video study for these guys?

As for the more senior names competing for these spots, I've only rated one or two games from Newman as good or solid, and the rest I've just witnessed him be a liability, one that we kept smoothed over through Thomas and O'Brien's two-way running. They're both gone from the line-up, and you saw how he played against Richmond. So did the rest of the league.

Gibbons has never impressed me enough to think he deserves to be a senior regular. He is a poor man's Matthew Wright, and that bloke was playing through ankle injuries. Stop automatically rooting for the underdog, and have some concerns for how our coaching apparatus does their job when it comes to development.

I'll save my thoughts on how Barker ties into these concerns for another time.

Call the game off you reckon Jimmae and hand over the points??? Lol

I predicted us by 38 but I'm changing my prediction based on Melbourne's 7 changes.
Us by 40.

If last nights game is any indication we can do that and still not score that elusive 100 points. That's a good thing isn't it?

Jeez the Roosters scored 59 last week in the NRL on their own, come to think of it they may have been on their own. Broncos took social distancing a little too far methinks.

Gotta say with the teams, I'm feeling good about tomorrow. 7 changes with 2 x fresh draftees coming in bodes better for us. Eddie will be raring to go, as will Pitto on debut. Jack should be amped to back up in his 2nd game for the club, not to mention Doc (after his long layoff).

Russell has us fit AF after the break and with our ins (Harry :hearts:)...

Id add Stocker to that list - he doesnt seem anywhere near getting a game at the moment. I dont think Kennedy will make it. Dow and Obrien are the type of blokes we need to step up if we are to improve and not being picked is an indictment on them. Dow ive got real concerns with since day one with his disposal and Obrien i thought would be cherry ripe to go this year - something obviously isnt clicking with him.

Great to be the side that isn't making 7 changes this week.

Probably covered extensively but dropping Oscar McDonald seems a strange move - Lever now has to take a key forward rather than be the third tall floating in and he is giving up 10cm to his likely opponent in McKay.

The idea might be to run us of our feet on the fast deck but with the odd preparation they could be out of run by 3/4 time and our big men won't be any smaller.

I just hope last nights game is not going to be the norm. I think it will be though :poo:
It was painful to watch. Like soccer … chipping around looking for a way through 18 "defenders" in one half of the ground ...just like soccer!!
Then in last three minutes it turned into Rugby. 36 points a team in any conditions is atrocious.
The shorter quarters will in fact make it worse as fatigue will be lessened allowing players to run back more.

I just hope D.T. will allow us to play more attacking, leaving one or two up front at all times. Taking it on!!!
I think he has shown he will do this. And it is the way we play best.
We don't have to follow the TREND, set our own style because I really don't think a purely defensive game plan
can win the Flag....Or I bloody well hope it cant but somebody has to show the likes of Hardwick and Buckley .

Let it be US.....Go BLUE BOYS :thumbsu:

I think the 7 changes is getting a bit of overhype here - will have no impact on any chemistry etc - it would, if it happened within a week, but this is a new start to the season. Its like comparing a round 22 team to round 1 the next year.
May not impact the Chemistry (although having 3 players who have never played for the team might) but doesn't suggest a settled side. If you remove JOnes and Bennell as simply not being available in round 1 that still leaves almost 1/4 of the side they thought was their best 22 in round 1 no longer in that best 22 by round 2.

I can't see Teague playing that sort of style, especially not with Betts Martin and McKay up forward. The thing I remember most from round 1 is us taking that 45 kick back into the middle of the ground which opened things up which we haven't done in years, can't wait to see more of it.
