Slightly disappointed with selection, but we went with our best available 1st 19, can't complain too much going with the more experienced 20th/21st/22nd (Newnes, Newman, Gibbons).

Same. Wanted to see a few things different, but knew we'd get what we got.
No player is ever totally on the outer, but some will now find it difficult to make headway this year.

We have many players we feel should be getting a look in and some may well do so, as injuries always come about (us more than most others it seems) but...

Where exactly are these players and what roles may they yet be earmarked for?
Williamson, Dow, Stocker, Kennedy, O'Brien, Philp and one could include Fisher here, also.

I was offered the gig last year by the group who have done the new sites (UK based) and I was hesistant in joining due to being Melbourne based whilst the rest of the team was UK based (so having meetings at night was not optimal for me, and being alone a lot was a concern). I ended up not taking the role, now wonder if I did would I've actually been able to push them and Telstra to actually build something for the fans??
So it's your fault!

I still have high hopes for Dow. Needs to fix kicking game. Both field kicking and goal kicking.

I get the feeling he thinks he needs to do something noteworthy everytime he has it. That piles on the internal pressure. Resulting in a flubbed kick. Especially with goalkicking.

I agree there are definite signs of 'performance anxiety' in Dow and I suspect that this is to do with suffering the unrealistic expectations placed on him/Fisher/SPS to replace Murphy/Ed as starting on-ballers- they all got smashed week in week out in Bolton's relentless nonsense about 'developing endurance over adversity' - they were all undersized, underdeveloped physically and paid the price - one way or another.

That said - I think Dow has underperformed defensively - his tackling ability just based on his leg speed should be a lot better than he is showing and nailing a few tackles is the best way to gain confidence.

People naturally focus on a player's ability to do stuff with the ball in hand - rarely do they understand that making tackles is itself an offensive act - less flashy than a burst through opposition - but just as important.

Yeah just watched Teague's presser.

He constantly re-iterates the mantra of competing harder for longer, being strong in the contest and the players getting their job done.

So it's clear he'd have a preference for the likes of Gibbons/Newnes/Newman who are more mature bodies who can compete and run hard all game...they all have a bit of mongrel in them as well which i reckon Teague likes. You can count on these 3 to not take a backwards step.

As opposed to the likes of Dow/LOB/Willo/Stocker who at this stage, would be more inconsistent in these areas Teague is preaching for various reasons.

It is a good question - and the 'easy' answer is coach(es) have to insist on much better output than was previously accepted - Teague has to be ruthless in his team selections and demote less than very good performances - otherwise, depth will be irrelevant - I think Setterfield was lucky to be selected again- Dow's ommission was a no brainer. I think all of Cuningham/Setterfield/Newnes and Gibbons aren't shoe-ins every week - and if Fisher was fit - Setterfield wouldn't be playing this week.

As far as the team lineups go, we are definitely in a position to win this game. If we can match their midfield output at a minimum, the game is there for the taking. I agree with those who won't take any excuses for poor performance.

On a positive note, the thought of the ball going into our F50 and having those marking targets AND at least two very dangerous small forwards is a damn nice feeling to have for a change.

CARLTON forward Jack Silvagni has been ruled out of tomorrow’s return to action due to gastro.
Silvagni, who was named at half forward in Thursday’s team announcement, was not at the Club for Friday morning’s Captain’s Run and will not play against Melbourne tomorrow afternoon.

His replacement in the side will be confirmed later today.

Kennedy, Lang, Philp, Willo

Thanks. Not sure why I expected to find that info listed on the AFL website - I should have learned by now that the site is completely useless.

Interesting to see who comes in - reckon it might be Kennedy - but I will ready myself for the debut of my boy.

i would like to see Kennedy in as the 4th tall forward and have a few minutes in midfield swapping with Cripps
Good shout, I think it will be Kennedy. He and Silvagni are playing the same role.

I'd be more excited for a debut or return of Williamson, though.
