It’s only 6 years ago that around 1000 Hawthorn supporters, including myself, trooped out of AAMI Stadium after another humiliating defeat at the hands of Port Adelaide. Back then we were lead by a second year coach & were trying to come to grips with a Hawthorn team that couldn’t beat a side equal to us on points on the ladder, as it was miles in front of us in experience, aggression & the will to win.

Oh, how times have changed.

Port Adelaide at the moment is a side that seems to have just one more humiliating loss in them, no matter how bad the previous one was. Last year, after kicking a club record low score of 3.3, they came out the next week & lost to us by a club record 165 points. So again we face a Port Adelaide team wanting to rebound after a humiliating loss.

So, what should Hawthorn’s objectives be today? A 100 point win? A 20 goal win? A 30 goal win? Like the game we played against GWS, this is a game we are expected to win comfortably, so the team will be judged on the manner of the victory & not the end result.

The Port Adelaide side:

One would think, given the events of last Saturday & beyond that Port are in trouble. Well, NO, nothing could be further from the truth if you listen to CEO Keith Thomas; “There is no crisis at Alberton Oval”. Maybe not, but there may be a crisis at Aurora Stadium on Sunday.
Their new coach has already covered himself in glory before when, as coach of Peel Thunder in 2005, he put all 18 players behind the ball at a ball-up. Devastatingly positive stuff there. But Hawthorn supporters of a certain age will remember Garry Hocking as THAT FILTHY DOG WHO STAMPED ON THE HEAD OF JOHN PLATTEN in the 1989 Grand Final, effectively ending his game. So what can we expect of the caretaker coach? More ultra-flooding? Or a return to the gamestyle espoused by the great Port Adelaide thugs - Neville Hayes, Kevin Salmon, Keith Spencer, Ray Hayes, Dave Granger, Stephen Clifford, George Fiacchi & Brian Leys? Or maybe just that good old standard “non negotiables”.
The only player to carry the can for last weeks capitulation is Aaron Young – a nine game veteran. Their midfield, while looking good on paper, has rarely fired this year. Truly, it is not easy to predict what Port Adelaide will serve up today, but if they play the high possession, low execution skills game that they have against Fremantle & GWS, the game is going to be very ugly, very quickly for them.

The Hawthorn side:

How we respond today from the disappointment of last week will go a long way in showing the maturity of the team. Maintaining the high standards that had been set in the previous 8 weeks should be paramount. Continuing the forward pressure, run & spread & the ability to back up your team mates will see Hawthorn victorious, it just remains to be seen how much we’ll win by. It will be interesting if (or when) Port tries to copy the pressure Geelong did successfully. Our response should be definite. Even without our two best forwards, we still should have enough weapons to see off the challenge.

Milestones:

In a remarkable co-incidence, both captains, Luke Hodge & Domenic Cassisi will play their 200th game. Hodge’s 100th was a 100 point victory over Carlton in 2007. Cassisi’s was an 8 point loss to Adelaide also in 2007.

Hawks by 140.

With both Roughy and Buddy out..
Could Gunston break the goal scoring record?

I hope Clarko has the current squad focused. There have been some big ins and outs in the past few weeks. If our rucks can dominate today, the sky is the limit.

Hoping to see a couple things today.
Isaac Smith dominate this game and kick 3-4.
A successful, injury free return of Xavier Ellis, people forget just how good he is, hopefully today he will remind us.
Luke Hodge to run faster than Jared Tallent walks.

Imagine an inform Smith running into the finals.. he could be the ultimate x-factor.

The hubris...... Just reeking of it...
Agreed.

I hoping for a win, nothing to make me horribly nervous, but I still don't take a win for granted.

Wasn't the last time they met earlier on this year in Adelaide. I'm pretty sure i went to that game.
You're absolutely right. I will edit it now.

Just want a win

Under hocking I imagine that the start may cause a few spot fires - maybe goo and tazz should be on the bench o_O
Port have a bit of pride here on the line so they can't be under estimated and I don't think there record is that bad in tassie.
Hopefully clarko gets to see how some new structures work, shoey and gunners in the fwd line, that Gilly has a good day out and we come through injury and suspension free.

Based on the performance of their last two games.
And that they are missing fairly important players as well.
And that their basic skills haven't been consistant over the season.

Last year in the coinciding game I wrote in the preview that they would improve after a shocker the week before. They didn't.

IMHO, they have a less talented team on the park today than when we played them at the MCG last year.

Maybe, just maybe, the reeking hubris has a little merit.

I can see Gunston having a day out today. He kicked 14 goals in the past 4 games since Buddy has been out and now with Rough out too he will command the ball and no Port defender can stop him because he is too much a smart player and a good reader of the game.
Even with Buddy and Rough out we still have a side that can challange for the flag as long as we win in the midfield we can beat any one.
Funny how the week after the Cats play us they had 4 players withdrawal from the game on friday againts the Weagles. Shows how much we belt them up, just not on the scoreboard....

Danger game is all I can say. Yes we are hot favourites but with an exhausting game last week vs Cats, Buddy, Shiels and Rough out, we need to be on our game. If we are primed and sharp we should win quite easily, but if we are sluggish, then we may end up with a rude awakening - I say this because Port will be very pumped after their pathetic effort against GWS and will be out to restore some pride.

So get on top early Hawks and stay on top. Don't give them a sniff !!!!!

Maybe...

And IMHO this is when it bites you on the a*ss

(but hope like hell you are right)
