It’s only 6 years ago that around 1000 Hawthorn supporters, including myself, trooped out of AAMI Stadium after another humiliating defeat at the hands of Port Adelaide. Back then we were lead by a second year coach & were trying to come to grips with a Hawthorn team that couldn’t beat a side equal to us on points on the ladder, as it was miles in front of us in experience, aggression & the will to win.
Oh, how times have changed.
Port Adelaide at the moment is a side that seems to have just one more humiliating loss in them, no matter how bad the previous one was. Last year, after kicking a club record low score of 3.3, they came out the next week & lost to us by a club record 165 points. So again we face a Port Adelaide team wanting to rebound after a humiliating loss.
So, what should Hawthorn’s objectives be today? A 100 point win? A 20 goal win? A 30 goal win? Like the game we played against GWS, this is a game we are expected to win comfortably, so the team will be judged on the manner of the victory & not the end result.
The Port Adelaide side:
One would think, given the events of last Saturday & beyond that Port are in trouble. Well, NO, nothing could be further from the truth if you listen to CEO Keith Thomas; “There is no crisis at Alberton Oval”. Maybe not, but there may be a crisis at Aurora Stadium on Sunday.
Their new coach has already covered himself in glory before when, as coach of Peel Thunder in 2005, he put all 18 players behind the ball at a ball-up. Devastatingly positive stuff there. But Hawthorn supporters of a certain age will remember Garry Hocking as THAT FILTHY DOG WHO STAMPED ON THE HEAD OF JOHN PLATTEN in the 1989 Grand Final, effectively ending his game. So what can we expect of the caretaker coach? More ultra-flooding? Or a return to the gamestyle espoused by the great Port Adelaide thugs - Neville Hayes, Kevin Salmon, Keith Spencer, Ray Hayes, Dave Granger, Stephen Clifford, George Fiacchi & Brian Leys? Or maybe just that good old standard “non negotiables”.
The only player to carry the can for last weeks capitulation is Aaron Young – a nine game veteran. Their midfield, while looking good on paper, has rarely fired this year. Truly, it is not easy to predict what Port Adelaide will serve up today, but if they play the high possession, low execution skills game that they have against Fremantle & GWS, the game is going to be very ugly, very quickly for them.
The Hawthorn side:
How we respond today from the disappointment of last week will go a long way in showing the maturity of the team. Maintaining the high standards that had been set in the previous 8 weeks should be paramount. Continuing the forward pressure, run & spread & the ability to back up your team mates will see Hawthorn victorious, it just remains to be seen how much we’ll win by. It will be interesting if (or when) Port tries to copy the pressure Geelong did successfully. Our response should be definite. Even without our two best forwards, we still should have enough weapons to see off the challenge.
Milestones:
In a remarkable co-incidence, both captains, Luke Hodge & Domenic Cassisi will play their 200th game. Hodge’s 100th was a 100 point victory over Carlton in 2007. Cassisi’s was an 8 point loss to Adelaide also in 2007.
Hawks by 140.
