AFL Autopsy RND 7: Draw Against The Pies

I know a few guys made errors but so did they . Bit of perspective. They are a top 4 side and we are a side trying to make it past 10 years of average.
There will be personal changes before we are at their level but you can not deny we have played with a bit of heart since the port game .

I keep thinking we have too many passengers but its exciting to know I can trust 15 of the 22, upgrade those passengers and I may be able to believe

they looked so much fitter. In that last quarter we were out on our feet and they still appeared to be covering the ground well enough
Do not think so as far as fitness. The just pounced on our errors and had better spread . It is the confidence they have in their game . We ran the game right out . It was just up and back for the last 10 minutes. They would have run us over if we were not at their fitness level.
They have the confidence to just keep rolling the dice . We are not at that level yet .

I think there a nice core starting to emerge,
There is also some players that while decent we could actually get something for which open up the team balance wise.

Need to upgrade hind, Kelly, lav, hep, forward pocket spot.
Kelly I normally like standards wise and with his running but he's starting to make some consistently bad errors.
Hep's pace was dreadfully obvious today, he's hanging on through sheer football mind at the moment, but when he's off by a tick, he's out of the contest. Going to ground way too much too.

But you put Perkins and Ridley back into that side and it's looking a bit better.
Though we are missing some pace that will have to be added via offseason moves.

Shame Goldstein ain't 10 years younger. I'd prefer his stable play than the Draper rollercoaster experience.

McGrath awesome game for him, I was harsh on him so I'll call it out whenever he does play like that.

We had some really bad defensive turnovers but a lot of our errors were via handball today, instead of lace out kicks to opposition.
There was a little bit of handballing to guys who were very obviously not open and it led to pressure and turnovers.

All that said, bloody fun game. That's why this sport can be great. The spectacle was awesome, had goals, momentum shifts, a massive mark.

Well done to Moore again as well, speaks great and touches on some points that are good to be reminded of.

So many times I thought Collingwood had an easy mark only for Durham to stand tall In front of the pack, he's the best!

Martin needs to play forward of centre, far more damaging.

No more Hind or Kelly pls.
his aerial skills are a huge asset. Not many hard in and under mids can leap like that

Should have won. As led most of the day. Parish better today and whole mid group looked good.

Laverde, hind and hobbs probably need some full games in the 2s urgently.

Hayes, guelfi and tsatas as replacements but suspect depends on Cox and Jones injuries.

Goldy probably should be rested from a trip to Perth.

Modern footy is hard to keep momentum but agree should have done better.

Some of the non holding the ball for Daicos shows he is a protected species.
Sounds silly but danger game next week and we need to keep banking points. Usually drop away a lot 2nd half. Bit nervous after two huge weeks/games.

We can complain about missed shots, but that was neutralised by the fact that they also did. We did everything to win the game regards effort, so that is a huge positive. However, losing it with our mistakes leaves a foul taste in the mouth.

Positives:
I am extremely happy with the effort to win the clearances and control the play. That gives us a lot to work with. Despite my Munkara love last year, I was very close to taking Durham as "my boy". I love him as a gut-running winger who is defensively responsible and is excellent overhead. He's now becoming an elite inside midfielder. Combined with with his run and marking.. 😍

Martin forward was awesome in the last quarter and demonstrated why we need him released from the backline. Surely, we can have him push up to defence from the half forward line and then try and beat his man back.

A friend at work is a stat expert and was able to put his finger on the stat. Parish has almost zero impact on meters gained. Today he turned that around.

Merrett is a champ. Plus marks for Jones, Langford, Stringer, and Heppell has been excellent. As long as they make sure he's not on someone who will burn him with leg speed.

Negatives.
To control the game in so many ways that we did today and not win is unforgivable. If we weren't a team with low expectations over performing, with our kids playing well we would be making a bigger deal about it. There were terrible defensive efforts, dropping marks in the defensive hot spot rather than bashing it, and the fumbles in the contest that stopped us from breaking free and draw's pressure. There were also 3 or 4 goals given up from ridiculous turnovers and shots on goal lost from missed handbells.

Players who need to be dropped or "rested".

Cox needs a break to learn that those turnovers are not good enough. A couple led directly to goals for them. He also missed handbells to players streaming inside 50.

I know that the plan is to play Laverde until Ridley is back, but surely playing Hayes is a no-brainer now. He just not up to it. We're a long way from winning a flag and if we have the opportunity to play a guy who may have a future then we need to get him in. Give him a month of games before Reid and Ridley are available. Also McKay on the tall, Hayes on 2nd tall means that we can play Ridley as a genuine 3rd tall.

Davey is just too light for now. He showed flashes today, but you can see that when he broke free he was surprised and didn't know what to do. When the ball is there to be won, he tries to take the easiest position physically rather than make himself dangerous. His chase is important. However, I don't see why Hind won't do that role better. In fact, I'd have Hind back in defence and play Martin forward.

Going forward.
We probably can't play all the talls, but Draper isn't the guy to run out a whole game, and Goldy probably can't as an old guy either.

You would think that Perkins, Ridley and Setterfield are all best 22. Who makes way for them? Does Shiel get a game? Reid?

We're getting better and the effort is great. Need get cleaner with our hands and reduce the unforced turnovers before we're going to be a good side.

I would not even call them passengers. They have a go . As you say we just have to upgrade a few spots which is part of the rebuild journey.
In the past we would have folded after some of the mistakes we made and it was not just the bottom 7 or 8 who had moments.

There was a little bit of handballing to guys who were very obviously not open and it led to pressure and turnovers.
The other infuriating thing was long handballs down the line when a kick would have allowed the player to take a mark and have a bit more time to assess the available options. Instead they have to make a decision in seconds and it generally wasn't a very good one.

We certainly did lack a genuine crumbing small forward. The amount of times we had to kick to a contest but had no one at ground level was frustrating.
I hope that we experiment with dropping a ruck for a small next week.

We were just too tall, and if Guelfi is fit then him. If not run with Tex or make Hind play a full game forward.

We should be beating West Coast but yeah might be flat.

Probably need to rest a couple too.

Soccer exciting? Paint drying and grass growing are more exciting than soccer.

Would no draws make it more exciting? No.

Yet their draws happen weekly. Ours pay $71.00 and there are 29 years between drinks.

Theirs decide cups, ours decide the order of finals, performances in which actually decide the cup.

Think it's a storm in a teacup (pardon the pun) when it comes to "the enjoyment" of the game.
