AFL Autopsy RND 7: Draw Against The Pies

I still think they should play both songs at the ground in a draw
Which team song goes first :
  • First goal
  • Last shot on goal
  • Most contested ball
  • Home team
  • Highest average tooth count in supporters
  • Most premierships
  • Least tattooed players

For those that haven't seen it, it is worth watching the press conference from after the game. Merrett joined Scott for it which doesn't normally happen. Was interesting to hear them both talk about process, but I found it more interesting to hear Merrett discussing it. You kind of expect coaches to talk about things like that but not players so much.
Watch Merrett. He sits there and looks in some weird pain brain dislocation.
Would love to know what he was thinking.

Agree. It also highlights the lack of even one fast small pressure forward. Davey may be the guy but right now he has to decide if he is actually going to finish it off and start making tackles. Mentioned it above that the future structure should be 2 rucks and no Wright or 1 ruck and Wright. It would allow us to play the two mobile tall forwards in Caddy and Jones. Pies play two rucks and a mobile forward line. We have the opportunity to use two rucks or 1 ruck and Wright who actually goes okay in the ruck.
It highlights the fact that our young rucks need to find a level and our quick small forwards need to come on or we need to look again in this space.
Regardless of the combinations, Wright needs to improve his pressure. Usually I would say it's beyond him but they do reckon he is an exceptional pro. He will never be a gun but he needs to not be a liability if we want to keeping building this style.

Wright is simply slow and his reaction time to defending is slow . I am not sure he can improve.

Yeah he probably will never improve much. But most players can improve agility by a few percentage points, and if Parish can learn to switch on more quickly to defend then Wright should be able to as well. Even being a tiny bit less useless at pressure would help.

Simultaneously.

Just to add to the pain and confusion.

Think more frustrating was when we did tackle him wasn't rewarded or when put physical pressure got soft holding the man.

Was bit like nba and superstar rules yesterday for daicos unfortunately so didn't mind the corral tactic.

Nick Daicos also has a tendency to stage and flop when contact appears. AFL would never do it but they should start actually fining this stuff like they said they were going to.

Can't fault the effort across the board. It's the standard that needs to be set

Based on the last 3 weeks, it could well be set?

AFL is weak as piss when it comes to punishing players

The Hogan punch to Young was the resultant penalty, Young should have been fined (less) for being an antagonistic ****wit

AFL gets serious about players playing and you hand out financial punishments for all (minor) non footballing actions. Flopping included

Watched the replay and remain impressed with our pressure and effort. Shame we couldn't capitalise on a great start and really a midfield domination early.

Some key things for me include:
Laverde is a liability. A great 'depth' player and gives 100% effort but the turnovers and dumb moments.. costly. Pies deliberately targeted his man often when going forward. Gets lost in traffic and has no marking presence at all.

McKay has played some great games for us already, this wasn't one of them. I think not having a 'monster' to mind might have had an effect? Just wasn't effectual as the key back. It wasn't a bad game but Pies forwards are very good at making space and we really need McKay to be directing traffic better down there.

Hepp continues to hold his spot but sheer will of force.. despite the fact that he is slower than a toddler on a walk through a toy store. Right now is still justifying his selection but oppo use his lose man as a conduit through the middle often and with effect. Our team will be better when we find a younger, faster version of Heppell.

Davey was important in patches. Yes he doesn't stick those tackles but he chases with intent.. and is one of the few forwards that do that for us. We are missing pressure in our forward 50.. and I think Davey will get there. Can't wait to see what we have in another 40 games or so.

Martin needs to go forward/back to his wing role. I have said this every week and it still holds true. I don't care about the HB role.. he is good up forward and we need scoreboard pressure. This should allow Redman to get back his best and then we need to find another good distributor down back. Third week in a row with an important Martin goal and surely the debate is now over. Play him forward wing.

Durham is a bull and a hard runner. A combo we have missed so badly for so long. It was interesting over the preseason when it was suggested that Durham was one of the few blokes that was putting up league average times for runs. Our fitness has long been an issue.. quite simply we just were not fit enough to play the modern game. Durham showing that the running capacity of mids is deadly important.. and hopefully our recruiters take note. Add in some toughness, willingness to work off the ball and a bit of competitive mongrel and Durham is close to our most important player over the last month.

Merrett is just beyond good. Absolutely in the elite category and his consistency is off the charts. Does not miss a beat and works very hard to lead by example. I hope we don't waste his career - it is clear the team feed off him around stoppages.

Parish put in a better showing and hopefully this means he is getting more confidence around his injury and we will see him back to his best in the second half of the season.

Finally Draper.. clearly a better game from him but I still don't see it. Goes to ground so easily.. tries to kick it off the ground too often, struggles to stay in the game. We looked better when Goldy was in the ruck and that makes me sad. Goldy was meant to be the 'chop out/cover' relief.. not our Ruck 1. Just need more from this bloke, we really do.

I'm starting to wonder if Draper has been coached at some time in the past to just focus on getting the ball forward at all costs. Maybe a Rutten instruction that is residual from Tiger style. That might explain why he tries to kick it off the ground so often.

Soccer background???

Think at his age he is what he is right now. They work on reaction time stuff a lot at training.
It is why I prefer one ruck and him as second ruck . Wright is a decent ruck and he has much more forward craft than a normal ruck.
Just need one of our rucks to step up and play 75 % ruck at a good level.

I like Nik Cox pinch hitting a little in the ruck too (which they have done at times this season). Not centre bounces but some around the ground stuff which gets him in the game more too. Still use 2MP as main back up but if can get 5-10% out of Cox then 2MP is a FF more too.

Hadn't thought about that.. but logically makes great sense. Just hope the new coaches can get him to change the mindset cause it just isn't working for him or the team. we are not a 'rolling maul' type team. Our forwards are lead up targets which means we need clean possession and good ball users to hit them.. not scraggy kicks that can go anywhere and mean that defenders make our slow forwardline look even worse!

A lot of good discussions here about the game and the result.

For me the thing that stood out was Sidebottom's head. I had to turn the contrast way down on the TV every time he came into the picture. I wonder if like The Great Wall he can be seen from space?

I wouldn't recognise that bloke if he didn't have that stupid shit eating grin on his face.

Team showed great maturity. I'm sure I wasn't the only person expecting us to not be able to match the final quarter specialists. But the list showed a maturity to continue to fight and will have gained a lot of belief from that even though we didn't win.

The amount we were able to continue to fight astounded me.

Future looks a little bit brighter.
