AFL Toast RND 8: Bombed the Hawkes

Well, I tipped Hawthorn by nearly 10 goals, and I have never been so happy to be so wrong.

Sam Mitchell can lick my nads.
fu** Hawthorne.

Yew
I actually has $20 on us at $2.85 . Had a bonus bet from todays races sitting there so I thought why not.

Whatever this forwardline set up was, that's the one

I agree, 2MP and Francis were good. The issue is, we have Stringer, Tippa, Jones and Baldwin as options when they come back, and I think it’s just as important that we accomodate Francis and settle him into a role. So that’s a challenge for the selectors. Which is why I don’t understand why they don’t play him at CHB.

I’d love to see Smith as a permanent small forward. He played more midfield time, but I think he’s perfect as a small forward, fast and quick reflexes. Kicks well at any angle and it takes him away from the frustration of the midfield contests.

Must say there were so many unheralded players today.

Laverde was enormous in the first 2.5 quarters. Looks a man possessed when confident in his body and game.

Hind was the one of old. Game high metres gained (552), rebound 50's (8) and bounces (8).

Devon Smith played like a team man and one I can get around. Match high 3 tackles inside F50 coupled with play8ing on the edge was good to see in Red n Black.

Mason Redman was another soldier who probably isn't getting the recognition he deserves. Unassuming who played very well.

Ben Hobbs showed why we were so happy to get him. Putting my hand up and saying I should've been happy when we got him on draft night. Genuine chance for the rising star nomination this week. Star in the making.

He got pantsed in the first half
Kinda, he was working way harder than Lynch who was essentially just playing a vertical game of centre square to Hawks goal square. Where as the mentality of continually getting to contests was what got us the win.

Amazing what happens when you don't overuse the ball by hand.

You could sense early they were trying not to, Merrett though seemed to be struggling with it.

It was interesting watching the pressure build as the game wore on.
Some aggressive Manning the mark too which is something I'd wanted.

They still moved the ball easily at times, and that will go up a level next week but the offensive improvement was nice to see

couple of fun facts for your Sunday morning

Hawthorn have not beaten a bottom 4 side in the last 3 years (10 - 0). North Melbourne in round 1 this year, the closest.

Peter Wright's goal on the run from 55m was his first non set shot of the year

they were plenty of times when they "overused" it last night....but they were almost always following situations where a mistake has been made that broke play down, a fumble, a dropped mark, etc etc. I don't view it that differently to the other weeks tbh. We weren't over-using it because we wanted, we were over-using it because we were making errors and we sucked

thought he had a mare in this same period. was at the wrong spot or didn't make an impact at multiple contests. it's fine, it happens. (two examples, I may be wrong, but this is how I remember it): the one where Lynch walked into the open goal, up on the flake Laverde was there, didn't make an impact which led to Bryan having to leave Lynch, and when Bryan run back into the flight to make that spoil that went into Gunston's (?) hands, Laverde had already left Gunston, which led to Bryan both making the spoil and having to be the one to chase Gunston whilst Laverde was in no-man's land)

I consider last night very different to the last few weeks.

Our kick to handball ratio last night was 1.72.

The 3 games prior were:

Bulldogs - 1.12
Collingwood - 1.02
Freo - 1.11

Extremely evident to me there was less sideways handball and an emphasis on getting the ball on the boot.
