AFL Toast RND 8: Bombed the Hawkes

Also felt like we controlled the tempo a lot more last night than previously. Was a really good way of controlling the pace of the game.
Thought our defece was a lot stronger with 2 genuine talls allowing Lav to play on Gunston (although they did mix it up a bit, saw BZT on him at times too).
Our forward structure was fruitful but as I said on Friday, the Hawks don't really have the tallest key defenders. All for trying it against Sydney who are pretty similar with the McCartin's, Rampe and Blakey
Midfield were stronger at the contest in the second half. Very important.

Not expecting a win next week but we should be able to trouble them

Just watched a replay then.

No mention of Laverde in here. I thought he was very good tonight. Backs himself to leave his man and attack the ball.

And I want to echo all the Sam Mitchell shouts in here. When they showed him at the end of the game, a stream of words came from my mouth I could only describe as being ones that my nan would have been disappointed in!

Still, fu** that smug prick.

Cotchin should feel the same way.

Last paragraph is spot on. Very frustrating.

Our FB plays 10 metres in front. If there is a quick kick they can intercept. Lav does it really well.

On a quick break they get out the back.

It happens. If you want the Def to play behind we'll get hurt more in transition than we do now.

You think Lynch didnt fairly and squarely pull his pants down in the first half?
Open your eyes fella.
Lynch had 4 marks and 2 goals and 15 hit outs, Draper has 2 touches and 11 hit outs.

2nd half different story.

There were another handful of players, including ruckman Sam Draper, who played under duress having been sick during the week, Rutten revealed after the Bombers’ come-from-behind 27-point win over the Hawks. Draper was one of several Dons who lifted late.

Yeah I heard Rutten address this in the presser, so they are aware of it. Really relies on the forward pressure to work well though so it will depend on the quality of our opposition. Hopefully there's a plan to enact if the oppo start killing us with it.

I think we need to be honest here and look at the game objectively. We got away with it as the Hawks did not punish our mistakes early enough and they ran out of gas. Gunston kicks 2.4 and a lot where gettable. The game could have been over in the third before we got that run on.

All our maligned players players this year kept on making similar mistakes but they didn't get punished. Hawks are a bottom 4 side, luckily we didn't play anyone with quality.

We were held together by Laverde down back, Merrett and Parish in the midfield, Martin and Wright up forward. Rest chipped in here and there.

Redman and Hind played better of half back but they made the same mistakes they've been making all year and were lucky not to get punished.

Only thing you could possibly really be pleased with is the 4 quarter intensity and crack. I think it was there from the start, just lack of skill cost us the lead for a long part and we came roaring home with a burst.

Thing is it reads very similar to our own posts last week.
We should have an 'Apology Thread' for all the knockers and sooks from last week.
Why? Nothings changed.

The win is fantastic and it's great to beat Hawthorn.

But let's take a step back in the cold light of day, we still played a very average first 3 quarters, the team structure was much better but it was forced it wasn't by design and a lot of people bemoaned the accurate kicking of Collingwood as the reason we lost there well the reverse happened last night.

The great win doesn't make the last 7 weeks irrelevant.

Yep, well said. Great win and everyone should celebrate. But it hardly papers over the cracks so far this year.

Crazy how forgiving and forgetful fans are when we get a win or a nice shiny trade rumour.

Watching the replay & the was a hard chase from Merrett early in the 4thQ, was never going to catch the dude but thats what we need to see from all the mids week on week.
I remember that. It was great to see. Saw Parish lay a decent shepard in the first I think, and Andy ran hard both ways all night. Caldwell too.
