AFL Toast RND 8: Bombed the Hawkes

I'll put my hand up, graded Francis pretty harshly in the match thread.
but he was great in that last quarter, and kicking that goal he looked on the verge of tears.
First game back of course he was going to be rusty flying for balls and making silly mistakes and maybe not having a full game day tank.

That's my bad.

What a fun game.
Redman huge, McGrath back but even when he was on the wing he took ground.
Caldwell was great, bit more of the defensive work to put that intensity in with the chase.
Shiel, made some bad blues and I'm happy it didn't cost us but he didn't drop his bundle. He was banged up and made some horrendous blues, but he kept working hard and won some big free kicks late with tackles.

Martin is an incredible find. I think I can see him in the number 5 at some stage.
Martin really was Hirdlike at times tonight. So stoked.

So good to beat those f*ers and that smug campaigner Mitchell. fu I hate them.

Our intent and willingness to compete can’t be faulted but geez we conspired to undo all of that with some dumb footy and poor skill moments.

Peter Wright. I don’t know which way to feel when I watch him. I loved his match-winning performance but that spilt overhead on his own in the 3rd that rebounded for a goal and that free kick against in the goal square when we were charging… he has so much bad to get out of his game it’s not funny… and it’s really bad.

Franga. Spoils his teammates yet kicks the game clincher.

Shiel. Bereft of confidence but he worked hard tonight and that last qtr tackle meant more than his missed goals moving forward.

Drapes. 4 disposals and 100 supercoach points. WTF.

When we are working hard in our congested forward 50 I can’t quite work out from the TV how when the Hawks get the ball out and rebound they have a player on his own in their forward 50. Where’s our cover? In soccer, if your centre backs go forward for a set piece you have a full back or central defensive midfielder sit back to cover the clearance or rebound. It’s drilled into them. I can’t fathom how we don’t have Lav or Reid or Zerk or all of them back preventing a Hawk from getting ahead of the ball. Bewildering and frustrating to watch.
Last paragraph is spot on. Very frustrating.

I want to highlight the effort to chase tonight.

Start of the last quarter, Impey streaming forward from the wing and Zerrett left absolutely busted his gut to close 20m gap to put the smallest of touches on him to alter the kick.
This is the non negotiable effort that leads the way.
Should be played on replay over and over in the background of the next team meeting.

Just got done likebombing every Sam Mitchell post in this thread. I hope he chokes on his fake Brownlow, craps it out sideways and clogs the dunny.

Far the bloody hell out. Just when you think you’ve got the club all figured out, they pull some madlad shit like this.

All the younguns should hold their heads up high for not giving up when it was looking hopeless. Great games from Martin and Draper especially.

It’s one step in a very long journey, but this one ought to be remembered for a long time.

Can’t wait to watch the replay so I can see what all those bloody disallowed goals were on about.

I feel like the game plan went out the window along with the outs and they got in that underdog take risks kinda shit and it worked

Not sure it would work against the top sides but whatever rn
So…there was a little of that in attack. However the first half of the first three quarters, we were generally running back to defend well, even the worst offenders I’ve whinged about all week. Then the second half of each quarter it’s like the usual offenders would forget again before and we’d lapse and then they’d be reminded at the break. The last quarter was fantastic across the team and the more we slowed them in attack, the more we’d gain confidence to rebound and attack fast.

Laverde had a couple of unusual lapses of leaving his Hawks opponent who was closest to goal wide open to try and affect a contest that didn’t really need his help, one he got away with. He was also burnt one time stuck with two players (didn’t see who lapsed on that). The positive thing in that instance was Bryan was the player who bolted 50m to spoil and help, good signs.

Redman is under appreciated in these parts, great game and is often the one who helps out at good times.

But yes the slap dash attack at all costs approach may not work so well
against Melbourne.

Haha me too.
The win papered over a few cracks for us, but **** Sam Mitchell. I hope this is the start of a long run of wins against that absolute campaigner of a man

Sorry to intrude, but you most certainly are NOT that bad. You’ll beat Hawthorn next week and have a strong second half of the season. Such a young team, with great potential and room to develop.

You’ve had a tough start personnel wise and with the quality of opposition you’ve faced. Been competitive most weeks which is more than what you can say for others 👍

I did tell you last week 😛

Excellent win and something to really build on. Expect a strong second half of the season, just need to get back to playing a consistent brand and anything can happen. Keep building the youth, there is some brilliant talent there 👍

Haven't posted much this year because I can't deal with the permanent negativity when we aren't doing well...

But the most pleasing thing this week is that it seemed like our players 'cared' for the first time - maybe thats just because they were paying more naturally and less in their heads, maybe its because we've got a bunch of debutants/non-best 22 in and they have to get by on effort. Whatever it was you could really see it in the last ~1.5 quarters where they were genuinely throwing themselves at every contest and taking the game on. Martin, Caldwell, Reid, Hobbs, Redman and Hind all examples of this.

Under no illusion that this is a turning point for us. Swans coming off an upset loss, Richmond and Port both finding form is our run to the byes. We might go 0-3 from here but I would be happy if the level of effort was like what we saw in the second half tonight. Honestly if it was we probably win at least 2 of those games but thats the benchmark for me. Get back to blue collar, go dons.

Hahahaha ok then

You cling to that
He is still all over the place when the opposition have the ball. Worst ball watcher on the ground. Just as well he can do some good stuff offensively.

He’s also quite short, not sure whether anyone is aware of that

Yeah I ****ing hate Sam Mitchell.. as our whole club should. He really is a rare breed of smug prick. His chat re Jobe and the Brownlow was embarrassing, and I wish one of our guys had laid him out that day he did the injecting sign thing.

But they didn't so now I sense we have a moral responsibility to ruin his coaching career.

While he is coach we need our own version of that agreement Geelong made - to never lose to Hawthorn.

And then let's finally finish him off in about 3 years with one of those coach killer 100 point losses.
