We beat the best contested ball team in the comp at their own game last night, while coming off a 5-day break and 3 men down. Huge effort. If that is the effort for all games going forward we're going to do okay.

Pickett looked good when he moved into the ruck/midfield but was poor otherwise. There's no permanent spot for him in the middle.
McIntosh battled admirably but we seriously need to look past him and Pickett. Modern day wingers need to be weapons, not role playing grass minders. TIME TO MOVE DAN RIOLI ONTO A WING.
Nank huge.
Prestia injury a shame but at least it means McAuliffe should play.
Grimes solid.
TIME TO MOVE DAN RIOLI ONTO A WING.
Loved Baltas game.
Shattered about Gibcus. Would've probably preferred it be any other player on the list.

Out: Prestia, Gibcus, Young, Pickett, McIntosh
In: McAuliffe, Miller, Brown, Trezise, Sonsie

fb- Broad, Grimes, Vlastuin
hb- Brown, Miller, Short
c- Rioli, Hopper, Ross
hf- Sonsie, Balta, Bolton
ff- MRJ, Lynch, Campbell
r- Nank, Taranto, Dusty

i/c, McAuliffe, Baker, Dow, Trezise
sub- Mansell

TIME TO MOVE DAN RIOLI ONTO A WING.

We have 2yrs too get Balta learning fwd traits with sexy before he retires.
.miller in for Gibbo.
Hopefully it becomes the making of the 2.
With Lynch in the forward line Balta looks very dangerous. Pity it may be necessary to move him back at times.

Is there any way that we can squeeze both Trezise and Brown into our side next week?

We need more cool heads under pressure in our AFL side, and from all the players that didn’t play today, I’d say they’re the least prone to brain fades. They’re calm under pressure and make good decisions. Their decision-making and skills in the back half of the field will prevent us from being locked there like what happened in the second quarter yesterday.

Despite their limited AFL experience, I truly believe that their composure can help us win the close games.
That's a big ask ... we would need to have two key backs not available from this week's team ...

Tresize, Miller and Brown should all come in

Yep, Balta must stay forward.

But I wouldn’t play Kosi at all unless he can show in training next week that he’s willing to compete in contests. Yesterday’s VFL efforts by him were laughable, and I don’t see a point in playing him just for the sake of their height.

Balta forward and Tom Brown in defence. Brown competes better.
I didn't see the ressies.
As long as Balta stays fwd I don't care who plays down back.

Ross looks a lot more assured this year. When the ball is in his hand, I feel like he is level headed and generally makes a good decision. He is also processing faster which has reduced the number of times he gets in trouble getting run down or coralled into a turnover. We should give him every game this year to see whether he has another gear.

Dow reminds me of Ross 2 years ago, does some nice things but a little bit invisible. We should persist with him because his hands are clean and his ability to extract is high. Ideally we should get Shane Edwards to mentor him — if he could be 1/3 of Sheds capability he will have something to contribute. People forget how long it took Sheds to come good… development takes time

I agree that Kamdyn and Pickett should be phased out but I don’t see it happening because they can play multiple roles. Sounds like Balta will stay forward, so Miller has to come in which I’m excited about. Hoping he can hold his own and cement himself in the team.

Sonsie for Prestia fingers crossed

Shattered about Gibcus. Really feel for the kid.

Secondly, can’t fault that effort at all.

Really happy with some of the amendments from last week. Better midfield structure, better methodology in stopping moment (although Blues helped with wayward kicking the Q2) and more functional forward line. Nank, Lynch and Dusty no doubt helped, but I do think there was some structural changes which also helped.

Still a long way to go however. The Blues for the ball to the front of the stoppage way too often, and our ball movement from the back-half is poor and relatively unimaginative. Seemed a bit better in the second half, but still an issue.

Yze and Co. might just need those first 10 weeks to work through it all.

For the players, good to see Dow get his hands on it and get creative. Don’t think he’ll ever be a bull or even a A-grade mid, but as a relatively creative player adds a point of difference to the midfield.

Really like Seth Campbell. Just effort after effort. Such a good tank tank too. Played that Lambert role but more of a natural small forward than Lambert was. Going to be a handy player.

Didn’t mind Mansell’s game either. Albeit that miss was a shocker. Coming back after 4 weeks out and came on early probably wasn’t ideal, but not a bad start for him.

MRJ had less impact than last week. But felt the forward line looks more dangerous with a fleet of smalls in it. That constant pressure that he and Campbell put on I think is going to be very important to the way we play.

Ross was solid.

Balta was immense. Think the forward ruck role allows him to play less like a caged animal. That turnover after a 50m penalty was a shocker though.

Onto the changes. With Prestia out I actually think our midfield rotations looks better, and our forward line looked more versatile. I’d keep that and bring in another running forward; which is either Sonsie or Clarke for mine. Would love for them both to play, but I suspect they’ll only select one.

Could go a few ways with Young and Gibcus out. Would love for them to bring in Brown, have Grimes be KPD2 and Broad KPD3 and also bring in Miller as KPD1 with Brown playing the Broad role.

Could do the double and have Grimes as KPD1, Broad as KPD2 and bring in Tresize as KPD3 and Brown in the traditional Broad role.

Could see it also being Kosi coming in as a defender, although he hasn’t played a minute in that position at RFC. Yze indicated that Balta would remain forward for consistency.

Changes I’d have:

OUT: Prestia, Gibcus, Young
IN: Sonsie, Brown, Miller with Pickett as sub.

Outside of last night's misfortune. Under no circumstances should we drop Balta back too defence.
Sexy would get double teamed.

I just don't get this thinking. The short break has nothing to do with Gibcus' injury. He landed awkwardly. That's all.
Weak leg muscles increase the chances of blowing knees out.

Tho I will say it wouldn't of mattered in this case and you're 100% right, it was a shit landing.

Ins:
McAuliffe for Prestia. Miller for Young. Trezise for Gibcus (better all round player than Brown I think).

Maybe outs:
MRJ for Cumberland. MRJ chases the ball like a kelpie and doesn't often catch it. Cumberland impacts contests and was good defensively.

Mansell. Just don't see what he offers. 6 disposals, 1 tackle, rinse and repeat from last year. Clarke is far better player and would get those stats easily. Sonsie also a maybe, but needs a game or two perhaps.

Agree with all those changes

Not me, i’m

Nope. Balta ain't a forward. It will take a LOT more than one game to convince me otherwise. He is one of the very few defenders who can pick up a Curnow or McKay however - best we've had since Rance.
Averaging 2 goals a game so far this season. Just sayin and last night we saw how it would work with Lynch.

Meatball is not the future anyway he is in the twilight of his career. We should be blooding a youngster in midfield.
Dare I say it, should Yze seriously consider Meatball as our "super" sub once he gets over his latest hammy. I mean at his best he's still a wonderful player in short bursts with high impact on games. Meatball probably would disagree being the sub however if it's for team first balance moving forward it could work. Just a thought.

Agree with those changes, although not the comment about Kelpies. My red & tan chases & catches everything! ;)

I said it all pre season.

He gets the 2nd defender and will kick 40-50 goals for the season

Agree, this actually presents an opportunity for us. I hope we’re brave enough to take it,
