As I've said for years and years, pick a team to take on THIS WEEK'S opponent at THIS WEEK's venue.

Playing Port at AO is a very different challenge to the Saints at Marvel.

We must tailor our squad for our opposition in any given week, not just reward/punish good/poor performances from the weekend before.

Often that squad will look very similar anyway, but here are nuances to different opponents on different grounds.

We need to be smarter selecting our team week to week, just like our players need to be smarter on the ground.

Yep. Positional sense, players for different roles. Will we need to employ macca as a tagger for example, or change up our midfield mix. Until or unless we develop our own dominant style and have the cattle to execute that style, horses for courses will have to prevail.

macca to macrae?

You just know McAuliffe won't be in.

If we don't give him a game now, I really worry we are ruining him. He is clearly a ball magnet, young and ready to go in a rebuilding team. We need him to get to 50 games very quick as he will take us forward if we develop him. Start him in the middle, play him there for as long as we can, and if he's struggling/unfit then sub him off. Do NOT START HIM AS SUB - IT ACHIEVES NOTHING.
Come next year, I want to see our starting mids as Taranto, Lalor and Smillie with McAuliffe the first one rotating in, followed by Ross and then Hopper.

Outs: Banks (Concussion), Bauer (Omitted) Smith (Omitted)
Ins: Lynch, McAuliffe, MRJ

Bauer does not work hard enough, and Fawcett deserves another go. Afterall, we have Fawcett, Armstrong, Sims, Faull and to an extent Ryan all competing for the tall forward spot with Lynch. We need to give them an opportunity to see who wants to claim their spot the most. Bauer looks disinterested and has been given a few games already.

I hate to say it, but what we are seeing is why we should not have resigned Macca.

I just knew he’d take twenty games off the kids. What for?

Sonsie is into his fourth season and still has barely had an opportunity to play midfield. And we are blooding a thirty year old in there when wins this season are secondary to development.

Chuck Sonsie in the guts against the Saints. Give him a full game in there. In fact tell him he’s got four weeks at AFL level in the guts to show what he can bring. Lalor had sixteen CBA’s on the weekend which is great. I’d like Sonsie to be given similar exposure.

What on earth do we have to lose - it won’t be any worse than the first half on the weekend? Give him a chance - he might actually surprise us.

How can you when the team is in it's infantry and we ares still trying to find who is good or who is bad and what is there best position. We are in no position to play switch players as you need proven cattle to do that. You are right though teams should play to the oppos strengths ground weather conditions.

Because in the second half back on the wing he wasn't too bad. We were slaughtered by their running game, and Mac has at least that. His disposal by foot was pretty good also.

He is keeping his spot until HRS comes back. Ross may be pushed wide again dependant on his form, hopefully last week was a blip, but we have very few others capable of running the wing all day. It would be a high priority in next years draft.

Dow is not a wingman, there is nobody in playing VFL or in our new recruits. Clarke has a shot but not ready. Would be happy to see Mansell up there, or Short play there. Campbell stays forward because nobody else looks like scoring. Smith also a shot.

Can't throw them all to the wolves.
The port player’s were running forward and overlapping and outnumbering because McIntosh and others weren’t keeping up with their direct opponents and applying pressure. Have a look at the stats for the port wings and compare them to McIntosh. Funny how people are criticising Toronto and Hopper etc but forgiving McIntosh. As for alternatives Short would be one or Brown or even Bauer all have good endurance and are better kicks or marks but are not being tried. McIntosh is not Dusty, he doesn’t deserve to be nursed though to 300 games at the expense of the kids.

It’s only been 2 games but anyone that McIntosh has tagged or played on has had 30 possessions. Can we find the StKilda player that turns the ball over the most and get McIntosh to tag him.

Not me.

It does seem however, that daring to criticise him causes serious heartburn to some in here. The coaches haven't got the balls or the brains to drop him to the VFL so he will continue to be played at the expense of a younger player until he either gets injured or retires.

And my money's on the latter.

But we probably don't win the opening game without him going to Cripps, surely the kids got more out of the last quarter against the Blues than 5 games of getting belted. McIntosh won't play every week but we need to remain as competetive as we can in the middle. Last year we lost the plot and had games where we had several quarters with minimal inside 50s. It's hard to develop anyone, certainly the forwards if we aren't as strong as we can be in the middle.

Anyway I assume Smillie will have one VFL game on limited minutes and then be straight in soon. So that will be another mid spot gone.

Bring out the artillery?

People saying Saints have only one tall forward and to make Blight Forward/ruck.
Unsure whether it's Fawcett or Bauer that gets replaced by Lynch.
Unsure whether Sonsie or McAuliffe comes in.

Harsh to drop any of the kids, but feels to me that we are a bit too tall and would consider moving out both Fawcett and Bauer (and Banks) for Lynch, Sonsie & McAuliffe.
Strengthen the midfield and the running game.

In the quarter and a half McIntosh was on Cripps he got most of his first half 19 possessions. The coaches then moved him onto the wing and put Dow into the middle. Unless our tactic was to exhaust Cripps by giving him heaps of possessions then I think the McIntosh tag failed

Because the tagger is back.

Teams are using this very effectively and it’s not a role you give to the kids

The hate on McIntosh is harsh. He was the only senior player that looked like he gave a damn in the first half.

Easy target

Because he was washed 3 years ago. The McIntosh plan should and I thought would be on the list for leadership and training purposes. He would be great in a role of mentoring young kids at the VFL level because he is a great worker.

Holding out far more talented kids in the 2's while McIntosh plays midfield is hard to swallow.

There's no way Kmac should be locked in our best 22 and playing every game. That is crazy

Ok controversial idea

Taranto to the HBF. He can run all day and be a chance to bring in mcauliffe to smash the saints out of the guts

You're highlighting his worst attribute in foot skills by putting him on the half back line and forcing him to pin point passes. Taranto should be playing forward with a bit of a midfield. That's where he played his best football at GWS.

Good around goals, good mark, size and good set shot. Also would allow Kane in and Lalor more mid time.
