I cant believe Rioli didnt get a vote. Bloke had a hand in nearly all their first half goals. They might not have scored up to half time if it wasnt for him?

On various boards, I've seen the following noms for Norm Smith:

Hawthorn: Hodge, Sewell, Dew, Ellis, Young, Rioli, Crawford, Guerra, Brown.
Geelong: Ablett, Selwood, Corey, McLaren, Scarlett, Corey, Johnson, Mooney.

Of those, I'm pretty sure Crawford (sentiment) and Mooney (joke) would be easily dismissed.

I had Ablett, Selwood, Corey as the 3 best Cats.
Hodge, Sewell, Ellis as the 3 best Hawks.

Overall, Hodge quite clearly from Ablett, Sewell then a small gap to Selwood, Ellis as my top 5.

hodge and ablett clearly b.o.g....only difference being hodge had more influence on the outcome...is hard to see how ablett didnt get votes from everyone...but i guess people just see it differently...

bad luck to geelong...but you will be back bigger and stronger in '09...bring on the tomahawk i say....as Clarkson has said all along, and continues to say, geelong are still the benchmark 42 - 3 speaks for itself....

I've loved how clarkson has handled himself.

Even said on channel 9 yesterday that they thought the cats had them covered at 1/2 time.

Because we did. Why do you think Geelong supporters are so shattered? We threw this years flag in the bin and handed it over when we shouldnt have. Make no mistake, as good as Hawthorn are, we were the superior team and we fluffed it.

The editor of The Age still hasn't replied, annoying. I just would love to ask Len Johnson, the magnificent specimen that he is, the reasons behind his votes, because personally I dont think he would have one!

I question if he knows anything about football because in todays paper his main article is about athletics (he hasn't written one about football), probably suits him better than AFL footy!

if the hawks hadnt kicked too well in front of goals and had lost by a few points i bet you wouldnt be saying that we "threw it away"...?

bad kicking is bad football....personally i think it was as much bad decision making that cost you....and bad umpiring definitely handed you a few goals....

beaten on the day ...fair and square....you may have been superior in the h&a games...but really, who cares.....

I saw it as:
Hodge
Young
Dew
Ablett
Cyril (best 10 possie game I have ever seen)
Scarlett

Geelong clearly beaten, well done Hawks.

Our forwards & entries into the F50 hurt us severely throughout the day.
Hawthorn used the ball better going forward & Hodge was worth 3-5 goals in defence for the day.

Like 1 other sides their is always next year & I hope Geelong can bounce back & win in 09.

It is so very very wrong to think that 2 'experts' couldn't see that Ablett was easily in the top 5 on the ground, if not top 2. Hodge deserved the Norm smith as his performance was what lead the hawks to the win, but I was saying to the guys i was watching it with that Junior could do a senior and win a norm smith in a losing side. He was awesome all day. Just needed a few more friends to follow his lead.

My top 5 would have been:
Hodge, Ablett, Sewell, Rioli and Ellis, with honourable mentions to Dew, Selwood and Corey.

Quite a good post for a bandwagon jumping newbie.
bad kicking IS bad football - and our muhc vuanted skills let us down when they needed to count most. All credit to the hawks for seizing the day!! Carpe Diem I say. They are now premeriship players, and we have to wonder how Lonergan and varoce were playing............

Cept for the bloody umpiring comment.

ha..fair enough...new to BF...but Brown & Gold from birth....

all i know is....the cats will bounce back bigger and stronger in 09...and any team will need to be on top of their game to even get near them.....imagine the cats v hawks rematch....

IMHO the Norm Smith should go to the individual who had the most decisive influence on the game.

Ablett had plenty of the ball. He had a great game. But his contribution was not decisive.

Geelong arguably lost because their forward line failed to function with any efficiency or confidence. Hodge was the individual singularly most responsible for the performance of Geelong's forwards.

I thought Sewell was very close too.

Look at the purpose of the thread before posting. This isn't about Ablett failing to win the Norm Smith, it's about some people not even putting him in their top 5 players on the ground.

Was he or was he not top 5? If you say no, you are as ****ed in the head as Rocket and Len.

And how is the form of the forward line have anything to do with how well ablett played? The bloke had 34 touches kicked 2 goals had 8 hard ball gets, plenty of clearances. Its not his fault the *******s in the forward line cant hold the pill.

Watching the game live I thought Ablett was 2nd only to Hodge and a close thing with Sewell. I thought at the time that the fight for the NS Medal was simply a matter of which side won, as both Hodge and Ablett were terrific.

However, having since watched the replay 4 times :)D I am sure you understand), I believe based on both quantity and QUALITY of possession, that I severely underrated Selwood's game, and that he perhaps had claims to be Geelong's best player.

I used to applaud your nickname for its comedic value, now I really feel sorry for you because you wasted $12.99 on it...

I think NormSmith2Hodge is still available if you're interested

I'm sure he is shattered

Also, great contribution to the thread. Thanks for dropping by.

i agree with this observation....after watching the replay twice...(something i gather most geelong supporters havent done) ablett had ALOT of it...but wasnt perhaps as damaging as selwood....both played great games....hodge definitely the most influential on games outcome though....

I have succesfully made contact with the editor of the Age Sport section and she is passing on my feedback to Len Johnson. I expect a reply in the coming day.
