I reckon we are missing having one or two like Ballantyne and Walters at Freo. Guys that cause havoc but also chase and harass. Too often we play 2 guys to fill the role 1 of those guys at Freo plays. King for defensive pressure and Edwards for the offensive part. A lot of those guys in this draft can rotate off a wing as well.

The key with those 2 is that they are consistent performers i.e. week to week you know what you're going to get. Again the type of player I don't want to go after is those flashy types who one week will have you looking on in amazement then the next couple of weeks have you pulling your hair out as they do nothing.

Well that's the aim isn't it? To develop a consistent player out of them? I don't think TheAnt wants us to go out and get an inconsistent player on purpose.

From my POV I want players that are already performing at a consistent level but need a little bit of refining rather than as I said those that one week will blow you away with an amazing game and then disappear for 2-3 weeks.

If we do that though, we will end up with a whole heap of sub-180cm mids and very vanilla type players or undersized KPD. They make up the majority of players that make it through to the rookie draft. Not too many tall, consistent mids who can use the ball well and are well built floating around that late. Our development team are going to have to do some work with our rookies.

You can afford to take a risk in the rookie draft, develop a player with flashy skills and make him have a well rounded game with some elite aspects. We have enough consistent, average players on our list.

I don't think I'm explaining my POV the right way. Happy to take an X factor type, just prefer that they have a decent level of consistency as a prerequisite when we pick them up. At least that way you have that as a base to work off rather than trying to bring a kid up to a consistent level.

In other words if the coaches know what they are getting from the kid each week it's a lot easier for them to focus on the areas that he needs to improve on. To me that is better than having to one week work on the kids skills, then the next week working on staying involved in the play, to the next week working on his defensive aspects and so on.

I'm not sure you're going to find any consistent yet gamebreaking types in the rookie draft. The best bet in the rookie draft is flashy but inconsistent players, because the consistent players that fall that far are typically consistently poor.

What are your thoughts on getting Ben Mabon as a ruckman in the rookie draft, provided he isn't rookies by another team? Seems a better option than a state league ruckman.

Also, if Charlie Cameron is gone, what about Willie Rioli?

Mentioned Ben Mabon a few times. Hope we recruit him at worst he could be very handy for our VFL team

I mentioned Mabon a few times this year as a potential trade target, along with Hampson, who I said is someone we should look at in 2011, and been a strong advocate for him since, as I feel he has a lot to offer us.

Mabon I think has the potential to be a good AFL ruckman, and if not, he is going to provide us with a solid ruckman at VFL level who will provide some decent service to our developing mids.

Agree on Mabon, we need another pure ruckman coming through, especially If Hampson's injuries continue...
A bit concerned about Willie's fitness and tank...?
But he looks like a freak, and would freak out (Carlton) defenders, which would be funny...

Only knock on him I've seen is his fitness and possible homesickness, but given we've had Taylor, Roberts and MacDonald who are talented but had behavioral/attitudal problems, Willie is, I'd argue, a better option than all 3, and just as talented. Just needs to bulk up and work on his endurance and there is a lot to work with. Low risk, high reward.

I'm not talking about them being a consistent match winner, more about having a consistent level of effort. In other words a guy that gives you everything he has regardless of the impact they might be having in terms of scoreboard impact or amount of disposals they are getting. As I said when you've got that as a starting point, developing the other areas of their game should be easier.

Wouldn't mind us giving a rookie spot to Jake Mckenzie, brother of trent. His Kicking effeciency at last years under 18 champs was 79%.

Is he a left foot 70 Yarder like Trent..?
I really like the work lately of Travis Tuck.
Travis Tuck.

My question mark on Mabon is with North having practically zero back-up to Goldstein, then why is he gone? Maybe he just needs a change of scenery to kick him into gear. I can't see us taking a ruck tbh.

Would love Rioli in the rookie draft. Probability of Cameron being there is low. There are probably a couple of others I prefer though but they could well be snapped up before we get a chance.

I'd look to pick up Travis Tuck as some inside cover - by all reports had a great season for West Adelaide and I think could still be a really good AFL player

I'd be hesitant about drafting Travis - while on one hand its very appealing given his performance in the SANFL, age and what he brings to the team immediately .... on the other hand, it seems that he is finally settled and is enjoying life now that he has a girlfriend/home and especially now that his brother has moved over there to expand their business ... given what he has been through already - he's mentally in a good place right now, so I'd leave him be.

Thats a really interesting take on his situation C4, and not one I would have considered.

On the other hand though, could being over looked again have a negative affect?

It's hard to say without knowing Travis and what he wants out of his life.

If he does want another crack at the AFL - I think the best outcome for everybody concerned is for him to be selected by either Port or Adelaide, that way he can integrate his now stabilized home life (such as his brother/girlfriend/house/business) with the demands of AFL in a more controlled manner.

Given his age and how impressionable he is, I worry that coming back to Melbourne may affect what he already has in place in Adelaide which is guiding him on the right path to happiness and keeping him in line on the straight and narrow.

It's just my opinion though, after all, Travis may think he is well enough to return to Melbourne.

Makes sense. As I said, I hadnt considered that angle and you have me convinced now.

You might be the first to ever say that Willie needs to bulk up ;)

Apparently Nathan Batsanis of Port Melbourne is/will be training at Punt Road. Guy wasn't specific as to whether he's in line for a spot with the RFC or reserves. But given tue fct he's a good player at an already good VFL side, he's looking to get drafted to an AFL club.

Not sure what type of player he is, but I think he is a small forward? Would make sense as a rookie spot, particularly now Nahas is gone.
