I've been really impressed with his games. He's one of those players that makes good decisions, and I always feel like we'll get something good happening when he has the ball in hand.

the only problem with rory laird is we havent got two of him! not too sure where he played yesterday but we surely miss him when he is not in the pocket, the place feels so much better with him down there.

Yeah very rarely fumbles the ball. Even if he is under pressure when he has the ball you know he isnt going to turn it over but rather its going tl reach a team mate. He is a tough little guy that throws himself into the contest. He also gets his own ball.

Is it wrong of me to fire this up again? 2 goal assists (equal first in the team), 5 clearances, 19 touches at 100% efficiency (obviously ranked number 1), 3 tackles and 5 inside 50's (second in the team) for the game against the Western Bulldogs. Considering he only spent 78% of the game-time actually on the ground (16th in his team out of 22) it makes those earlier stats even more impressive.

Has been named on the bench or in the forwards. Will be dropped

Ooh, i better add one of these: ;)

Close to my favourite player.
Composed. Tough. Smart.

My first picked small apart from eddie and first string mids.
I agree bigbloke...his attack and endeavour when toughness is required is amazing. I must say I hadn't heard of Laird when he got his first game for the Crows -Under the radar

Hope we don't keep playing him as a small forward. Very easily for a player, unless he's a genuine forward, to get lost in this role. IMO better small defender option than Jaensch or Brown. Get him back there or around the midfield.

I think just swap him and Jaensch around; Jaensch's bad defending capabilities were really exposed on the weekend, play them both in their natural positions and we will be a better side for it IMO.

Yep, spot on mate. Defenders need to be able to defend first and foremost, as well as run off their man and create. Laird is the perfect balance as a small defender and needs to be moved back there immediately in my opinion.

I love the way Lairdy plays - full throttle at all times.

The defending issue that was badly shown up against the Bullies was the inability in marking duels against small/medium forwards. Can Rory compete in that area?
I wouldn't be from a lack of intent or willingness.
I've seem him burned (badly) by robbie gray a couple of times in getting turned around coz he is so intent on meeting the ball -> not sure about defending a marking duel. Can be taught but I guess it would be his height and strength that might expose him. Love to see it tested so he can prove, again and again, just what a wonderful little footballer he is.

I guess that was what I was refering to. He has great footy instincts, but size is size.

100% disposal efficiency is amazing for a guy not blessed with electric pace or a strong body. He's not getting the ball in situations where he can get himself free and to space, he's usually getting it under pressure and having to execute a quick kick or handball.

He should have had three goal assists with his excellent pass in the last(?) quarter that was marked 40m out in front but not converted.

Super player. I still can't decide whether I prefer him in the middle or down back, but geez, it's nice to have a player who you know will give you quality in either role.

Does anyone remember at the time why he was overlooked for the National Draft? Just due to his lack of height?

There wasn't a big deal made out of why, but yes, it would have been a lack of height and pace. There seems to be a theory that if you're short, you need to be super quick. Rory was listed as 175cm when he was recruited (not sure what height he is now) and was seen as being a touch vanilla, I guess.

Was also apparently sick during the championships but it didn't hurt him too much since he made the bests most games there.

I'll take Vanilla Poise any day.

Absolutely. What did shine through in his championship games was that he's a very quick decision maker and has great hands. And hasn't that shown up in spades in his AFL form. He also had a reputation for having a strong character, which has also shown up.

For Laird, the only thing he'll need to go from a good player to a great is to neaten up his kicks a bit. He's got everything else he needs to be a very good player.

Is it just me or does it feel like their going to turn Rory into a midfielder... i mean, could playing forward of the ball just be apart of his education as a player?

He actually was played partly in the midfield for the game on the weekend. A very short stint when he matched up on Griffen while Kerridge was receiving treatment under the blood rule. He was pretty handy during that little spell too.
