Player Watch Rory Sloane - Retired

Sloaney, fabulous Crows man, it's clearly time.

Play your guts out in your 250th, then do the right thing and tell the club to select you sparsely, or finish the season developing young guys in the reserves, then be the true team man you've been, and graciously retire.

Be one of the few AFL players to man up and make the call.

No chance. His comments yesterday is he doesn’t want a rest and wants to play on unless we kick him out

Would love for us to do just that, and to finally end this old guard culture of leveraging the club in the media. Walker, Crouch, and Sloane all guilty of it in the last few years. At least Tex's form has earned his spot.

Just checked Facebook, give him 2 years!!

Seriously how clueless can Sloane be? He’s just come off a game where his lack of speed for the game created 4 goals for the opposition. Surely there is some self awareness?

Just on that, Tex is never allowed to retire. Put him in a wheelchair if necessary. He'd still be good for a couple of goals a game.

So Sloane is talking up how in some games he is being managed and playing limited minutes. So when rotations are key, his management has effectively meant others are picking up his slack during the game. This instead of doing what most players at his age do and miss a game which also gives others chances.

How is this not a selfish approach? jenny61_99

I'm not sure how people rate his career as an A grader. In between B- to B for me.
One and a half years as an A grade player in the league, history shows he wasn't a good enough 'star' to win the cup when the team relied on him.

Where did I ever say he wasn't selfish? He has also been selfless at times. I'm not arguing that his time isn't up, in fact I believe this should be his last season. All I'm saying is that the disrespect in here towards a club champion - particularly leading into his 250th game - is disgusting.

So what is the criticism of this club champion? That his form is poor, the game has gone past him, he should retire gracefully rather than make the club sack him and he’s selfish. Seems you agree with all of that, so it’s okay to think it but not post it? Odd take for a football forum.

I just think there are ways, and ways of posting about Club Champions. Read the selection thread (and some in here too) and it's pretty bloody awful.

A poor game is a poor game so the selection thread have at it

Its unfortunate he had a poor one just before his 250th because we are now focussed on him and his game last week - plus his season has puttered along in bursts

He is a club champion and should get due recognition but there were signs early the management of Rory should have been better

Yes but if that club champion is selfish and whose performances are hurting the team, then do you really expect him to be treated the same way as a champion who knows his time is up and puts the club first?

I don’t think he’s selfish, or at least, anymore selfish than he should be. Every player has the right to squeeze as much money out of their short career as they can.
It’s up to clubs to resist it.
Some lucky clubs will have players take less than they are worth in the interests of team success, but no player should be expected to do that.
He’s been a very good player for us, stuck with us to the end (well paid, I know), and deserves respect. That doesn’t mean we can’t bellyache about his performance, or about the club picking him when he shouldn’t be picked, or worrying about him getting a new deal.
Respected =/= beyond criticism.

Hahahhaha stuck around to get paid an elite level contract while providing a rookie level of performance. What a selfless hero woweee. Brave husband. Super Soldier

Edit:
He looked out for himself and played the club like a fiddle to get a massive contract. Good on him, but he is no selfless warrior for the club.
If your manager doesn't get you the best deal possible that you were ok with, it might be time to get a new manager. You can't have issues with that contract if both sides are happy. The AFC had a choice.

I dont think he is selfish either, I agree he needs to do whats best for him.

However, it will be the Crows that I will be frustrated at, if they give him another contract to play on. Sloane is cooked as a player.

Sloane benefited from the fact that Danger had left to go back to Victoria at the same time as his new contract was coming up, so naturally he got much more than what he should have for a player of his quality.

If he plays again next year, Berry and Shoey will still be playing sanfl
Earlier in the year, the club talked about player management and resting players, it's been really disappointing that it hasn't happened.
Tex getting the one game off at Ballarat the exception.
With the extremes of our clubs list, we should have been giving those young and old players a week off throughout the season

I reckon a bit much gets put on the player.

Players want to play, it’s how it should be, up to the club to make the hard calls.

You’re going to be sub this week.
You’re not playing this week.
We’re not extending you.

They shouldn’t be sprouting off in the media though.

Danger left at the end of 2015. Sloane signed his deal in 2018. It was the desperately needed good news story after the shitshow of 17/18. So yes he benefited from that. Most people were massively relieved at the time - I think the only qualms were about the length of the deal.

But the fact the club hasn't sat down with him yet tells me he may not be offered a new deal and even if he is, it might not be one he'll agree to. Maybe they want to pay him the respect of letting him celebrate his 250th before trying to taper his expectations too much.

He was a bloody good player in his time. Nobody tougher. But the game's gone past him and it's a shame he doesn't seem to realize it.
