Player Watch Rory Sloane - Retired

I just think there are ways, and ways of posting about Club Champions. Read the selection thread (and some in here too) and it's pretty bloody awful.

You don't have an argument against the substance of the criticism, but feel strongly that they should not be allowed to be expressed?

So, your standard position then?

Anyone who thinks Rory won't be at the club for much longer, heard him on AA before and they were pumping him up saying how great he's been this year and he said that he's feeling good and thinks he's got a lot to offer for another year OR TWO

Rory’s never been anything other than delusionally positive. It’s just the person that he is.

Has been a great player over his career and deserves the positive accolades that come with his 250th. I think he is near the end. I am unsure why he is not used more frequently in the sub role, or rested more often, as I do still think he has value in the side in a limited way.

Has had a great career, has done well to play at his age after a knee reconstruction.

Well respected and loved player.

But someone needs to tell him it's over.

Best way to end his career is to announce this is his last year on the ground after his 250th.

I reckon he'd be a perfect sub, though I heard someone say last week that it takes him the first half to get warmed up (which is why his second halves have been better). That's probably not ideal if this is the case?

He did say on FiveAA last week that he’d understand if the Crows decided not to give him another contract.

Was the first time I’ve heard him even acknowledge something like that.
If he said that, then I reckon they've probably said something to him.

Its not ideal. Its something mentioned on here and the stats seem to back this up

How can you have a dead player waiting to ''warm up'' even one as good as Rory in full flight ?

Saying we dont want Sloane in the side or next year at the AFC, isnt an attack on him, its about the greater good.

That being, that the AFC must and always come first ahead of any player.

Sloane was a good player for us, but his time has well come and the game has passed him.

He may have a great game on Saturday night for his 250th, but he wont consistently have good games for the AFC anymore.

Best case: Has a great 250th then retires

Okay case: Has a great 250th, then retires at end of season.

Worst case: plays on in 2024.

Congratulations on a fabulous 250!! Has been a wonderful player.

This is what you call a back handed compliment! 🙃

I think we are passed best case scenario, it would have been surely announced by now.

He has a young family and believes he can still play on. He will probably argue he was getting over the ACL this year, but a strong summer and then watch out.

I think the Club will give him another year, because of loyalty. Its the Crows, its how we roll.

He shouldn't have played as many games as he has this season, maybe half of them. That's on the club though. This selfless warrior servant superhero champion stuff people are putting out is revisionist hyperbolic bs that usually comes out at milestone times.

Sloane has been a pretty good, courageous player that had a couple of great seasons 6-7 years ago. Captained the club during some shit seasons. He got a great multi year contract in 2018, for which the club didn't get a good return. Milestone is more for the fans than anything, club doesn't owe him another contract.

Was my favourite player for quite a few years. I actually think he's been okay this year up until last week where he was horrid. The board has a bias against any senior player that isn't dominating.

I think he should make way this year. The midfield doesn't require experience with Laird and Dawson. There's really no case for him any more given his output is likely to get worse.

So Sloane has admitted he won't retire until the club drags him kicking and screaming.

When he does his 'retirement' presser and he inevitably says 'I decided now was the right time to hang up the boots', we know that is 100% bullshit and he was forced.

just like he did the team thing and handed back the captaincy that one millisecond ahead of Nicks saying Dawson had been selected for the role.

One and a half years as an A grade player in the league, history shows he wasn't a good enough 'star' to win the cup when the team relied on him.

He was a player “figured out” in his prime. And that was the end of his time as an A grader.

I think he means well, but his choice of language isn’t always the best.

His current statements he’s trying to communicate loyalty and absolute passion for the club, but he’s not very good with words and therefore it comes across somewhat clumsily as being self-interested

Which has certainly been accused of before. It would be better if he spoke less

I wasn't advocating Sloane playing DEF this year .....I believe his role this year will remain unchanged, not my wish, just belief of what will happen

Two questions:
1. Do you think we need a small DEF in the mould of Laird / Johncock ....to manage those nippy small fwds of the opposition?

2. Do you think Smith is still a good defender .....or is his appraisal impacted by his long kicking

It seems to me, Smith hasn't great agility or defensive capabilities these days .......personally I'd prefer Sloane retire, and Parnell play next year ....Parnell is getting better year-on-year, and projecting forward to 2024, I'm keen on what he brings with his speed & elite kicking

1. A nippy small defender would be great. Not sure what that's got to do with a discussion about Rory Sloane's future role.

2. I'd retire Smith as well, but if it's a choice between either of the two, Smith wins hands down.

Where did I ever say he wasn't selfish? He has also been selfless at times. I'm not arguing that his time isn't up, in fact I believe this should be his last season. All I'm saying is that the disrespect in here towards a club champion - particularly leading into his 250th game - is disgusting.

well, it's not our fault we didn't go to a camp that made us better husbands, fathers, teammates and Sloane apologists.

It was a strange phenomena really.

The analysis after Dangerfield left was generally that Sloane was best as the 2nd midfielder, and that we were short the genuine star.

We, and he, outperformed expectations in 2016 and people abandoned that analysis and it was considered debunked, despite that from mid 2017 onwards it was ultimately proven correct and it ultimately resulted in our falling short.

People got so excited in the 'we didn't need danger afterall' hype, that they elevated Rory to that standard in their minds based upon 30 games of his career.
