I reckon he'd be a perfect sub, though I heard someone say last week that it takes him the first half to get warmed up (which is why his second halves have been better). That's probably not ideal if this is the case?

that's pure rubbish, it takes the first half for the game to slow down enough for him to get near it. But it'll be easy to test it, just make him sub. I'll wager he'll have a very similar half and we won't have had to play with 17 on the park for 60% of the first half. And how selfish is that, 'I can't be sub because I need the first half to warm me up for my second half'. What @bout the impact to total team performance from his first half? Irrelevant to him I expect.

He just picks out the blades of grass to dispose the ball to.

2 great seasons, the bar is low for champion of club apparently.

Harsh.

I cant stand that hes being handled the exact way Id expect our club to handle him, but hes been a Champion for this club for more than just 2 outlier seasons.

Two great seasons. A couple of really good ones and the rest range from pretty good to ordinary. Been oridnary after 2017.

Should have been managed this season, used as sub etc.

Post 17, I agree. Prior to that I think he had one average season. That being the one he co-Captained with Danger, where he was probably still a lot better than anything after 2018.
The guy has bled as hard for this Club as anyone I can remember. That has taken an obvious toll.

I think he should be playing Murphys role if anything.

100% would be much better suited at HF. And much better than Murphy, way better overhead.

People have some weird ideas on this board about what Murphy does in the team. Sloane is incredibly poorly suited to Murphy's role of a pressure-oriented high half-forward. Sloane's skills, at this point in his career, are his ball use, decision making, fitness and physicality. His biggest weaknesses are lack of pace and ability to apply defensive pressure. He's someone you're happy to have getting the ball close to goal (I think he's 5.0 from set shots this year), but wouldn't apply the kind of defensive pressure we'd be looking for from a forward. So we play him as either a midfielder, where he's there to help fight for clearances and apply tackling pressure (second for clearances and third for tackles per game this year), or they just throw him on the wing where he can run around without a huge need for defensive accountability and use his decision making ability to help link up between attack and defence.

I don't even see how people can think he's 'bled' for the club more than the guy that played 250 games a few weeks back, let alone the most ever.

He was a player “figured out” in his prime. And that was the end of his time as an A grader.

Didn't have the tools, physical or mental, to overcome a tag which prevented him from ever being considered elite/ A+. That's not to say he can't be considered a great footballer but does put a cap on his ceiling.

Unfortunately for us the opposition worked this out just in time for the Grand final. Up until that point the opposition never tagged him because he either wasn't the number 1 midfielder on the team or they didn't think his influence on the game was enough to warrant a tag. Ultimately he never worked out how to overcome a tag so even if they had started doing it earlier the result would've been the same.

I wouldn't say his strengths are ball use and decision making. My point was more that Murphy is shit. Push Sloane up there. Delist Murphy.

I don't want him to play on but would prefer him to Murphy or Ned everyday of the week. But I would prefer a literal sack of potatoes over those blokes so that doesn't say much.
Pretty much the same. I would prefer playing with 2 less players. Though McHenry I am disliking less lately even if he mainly runs around like a headless chook.

Started happening against the Roos in 2017. You can even see it by the Brownlow votes. Went from racking them up to getting them sporadically. Wasn't getting tagged every game, but it started happening more often than not.

We have lost 5 of our 16 first halves. Rory ain't hurting us there.

As always you are over the top.

For the record, I definitely think it's time to put Sloaney out to pasture. But how ridiculous for some of you to put the decision as to what's best for the club at the feet of the player. There are multiple people in positions of power who are paid bloody good money to make these calls. They are the ones who should be held to account for this decision.

In terms of his importance to this club, he's been right up there imo. Not from a playing perspective - he's been good, not great. But I love the way he bought into the club, and the city, as an interstate player, to the point where he actively advocates for the SA as great place to come to. He seems to have a genuine love and affinity for the club and the city, and has been a massive part of rebuilding the culture of this club at a time when we needed it most.

With that in mind, I couldn't GAF if he negotiated himself a 5 year deal, or if he wants to play on next year - why shouldn't he? This is his career and his passion - dudes fully entitled to progress his own agenda for the betterment of he and his family. As if anyone here wouldn't do the same.

The main question at this point is whether the club is able to put on it's big boy pants and make the right decision to end his career, in spite of his aspirations.

I'm not dismissing his impact to the club

But it's just another example of a Crows senior player that, at least publicly, puts themselves before the club.

I understand stand saying things like, he'll play until the club tell him to leave, is intended to say how great the place is, but I see it as I'm playing regardless of if it's the best thing for the club.

Mind you, I'm hopeful behind closed doors that attitude us the opposite.

Is it normal to have this much celebration for a 250th .....it seems more in tune of a 300th

Or is this a celebration of Sloane's career (insert, coming to an end)

He is the 9th player at our club to make it to 250 games. All celebrations are warranted!

Lets not forget we are talking about a club captain, 2 time B&F and All Australian all whilst being a one club player....

I'd go a step further and say I'm not all that keen on a footballer just doing their job, one they're well paid for at that, being framed as a war hero. I mean I get the sentiment but I still think it's bit of a wank.

Wouldn’t even know it’s his 250th if this board was your source of news, seems to be a complete lack of respect on here for a club great reaching 250 games. He’s my all time favourite Crow and I can’t wait to be there to celebrate his 250th this weekend, congrats Sloaney 👏
