Player Watch Rory Sloane - Retired

It's no surprise that one of only four players in club history to play games at 34 years old thinks Sloane should play when he's 34 years old
Look how quickly Roo fell away .....those crash & bash players usually don't have longevity .....and certainly not at 34

Dangerfield has surprised me ....thought he'd do a Roo ....that said, he's copping longterm injuries, he's never had B4

We won’t do that though, we will play Sloane.

And it’s all well and good for Bickley to say he will be better than the last player on our list, but that’s bullshit. What if that last player we pick up in the draft actually can play? He has the possibility of a future whereas Sloane has none.
Sloane V Murphy V Hately V McPherson, for the last list spot ?

Should be some more chatter this week with Kane coming out pretty strong tonight on footy classified saying Crows can’t have Rory try to guilt them into giving him a ‘club great’ extra year and they need to tell him it’s over.
the rare good take from kane.

Unfortunately, i don't think a lot of people will take his opinion on this seriously after he back flipped when Hutcheson asked him the same question on Boak.

All of them should go and draft a player
Even Sloane playing in SANFL is wasted. He's just going to be taking be midfield minutes off of 1 the young fellas.

Though I could probably live with him staying on the Wright role as at least he'd be freeing up a list spot. Wonder what Wright is planning/contracted to be doing next year though?

IMO Wright looking just about shot .....knee bandaged & having lower game-time

Would you not contemplate Sloane captaining the SANFL side .....seems a good move to me

I'd be ok with it. Would Rory be ok with it? I have no idea.

TBH if he was up for it, probably not the worst way to transition into life post playing if he plans on staying in the industry.

I'd argue this is probably underrating the value of having a veteran with exceptional standards in the development side as a mentor. You'd definitely want someone like that in the side, whether it's Sloane or not. I doubt Sloane is interested in playing a full season of SANFL but I definitely think it would be good if he did.

If we do sign him though I assume it will be with an eye to playing AFL, which is not ideal unless we have a lot of injuries or something next year.

I'm not under rating him in that role. I like it because he'd be off of the AFL playing list.

I just have no idea if he'd entertain taking it on though if he isn't eligible to be picked to play in 1's.

This post is hurting my head.

Personally I think he would be better going elsewhere for his own development if he wants to stay in football.

Likewise I think the SANFL team is best served by having someone with outside experience.

Danger has one more box to tick.....Premiership Captain.

Time waits for no one unfortunately.

Must be tough for him with Tex carving it up and having his extension announced, whereas Rory is facing the end

I have this nagging thought though that any shortcomings this season (getting caught with the ball, bit slow chasing) will be put down to the ACL recovery. Won't be an issue next season. By Rory and perhaps by the club I mean. Add in our young list...?

Tim Silvers warm comments about all the South Australian holiday spots Rory has tried to put him onto hasn't exactly filled me with confidence.

Interesting that our system of running only 4 players through the centre square for so many years has left Sloane without another string to his bow to fall back on now.

Rumours are Sloane has a calf issue, which ultimately could help him get an extension. If he can’t play, his deterioration won’t get highlighted every week and the past few weeks will become a distant memory when the good news comes out about his re-signing.

He’s not a thinker or a student of the game, very thin skinned too. Won’t have a long coaching career at AFL level.

I don't think there is any value having Sloane at the club after he finishes playing.

I dont know how you can come to such a conclusion. Playing ability compared to off field roles is chalk and cheese. Sloane made it all the way to a GF and knows the professionalism it takes to get there and has the experience of Craig, Bickley, Sanderson, Walsh, Campo, Pyke and Nicks. Played over 100 games with Dangerfield, considered one of the greatest players to play the game. Played over 200 games with Tex, one of the greatest forwards in the game. Played with Smimon Goodwin, Andrew Mcleod, Tyson Edwards and Scott Thompson.

If ever there is an ex player I'd want at the club long after retirement to empart his wisdom it would be Sloane and Tex in a heart beat.

I just can't believe there we are having this discussion.

It's due to this "experience" I don't want him anywhere near our club in a coaching position.

He has been a major part of our dysfunctional midfield for the best part of 10 years, he couldn't/didn't know how to shake a tag and you want him to impart exactly what to our next gen midfielders? How to be a better dad and husband?

He also holds the title as our worst captain and you lump him and Tex together for their wisdom. Tex has 100x footy wisdom of Sloane.

As that little weirdo girl said "how dare you".

I can see the benefits of keeping Tex on for forward craft/positioning/goal kicking/leadership coaching he was/is elite in, not Sloane.
