Player Watch Rory Sloane - Retired

Yeah I don’t get why we have to s**t on Sloane’s career

95% of players at this level would be ecstatic to have had the career he has

Because that career is being presented as justifying treatment contrary to the interests of the club we pay membership to.

Correcting a falsehood isn't disrespectful, it's just honest.

No doubt Sloane has been a very good player - and with some better luck with injuries he might be greater than that. If Richmond had had an off day in 2017 he'd be on the extremely short list of Crows premiership captains, but sadly it was not to be. He's been a heart and soul player for the club, and he's also part of that group which finally demonstrated that quality Victorian players could come to the Crows and actually choose to stay there.

No he wouldn’t?

In the context, no, not all that good. This isn't club legend territory and you know it.

Other than demonstrating you have a largely defective brain, is there any point to that weird cheersquad lie you keep posting?
‘Not all that good’ re Sloane

😂

As talented as Fogarty is and I’m loving his form you do realise Todd Marshall’s record stacks up against him ?

What did you think you were doing?
Making a point that many would agree that some of the posting on Sloane has been downright disrespectful for someone who has been a great servant of the club.

No player has a right to choose over the club when they retire...

Do you talk to people like this in real life?

It's possible to be critical of people without being a complete tool.

BTW, I'm not going to derail this thread with a back & forward argument.

It's in the context of his fellow players saying he should get to decide when he stops playing, and the coach saying he is the club, etc.

However, none of that places him in some kind of untouchable bracket where he should get to dictate to the club how his career ends. There are very few players I would place in that category and Sloane isn't even close.

Hopefully that stuff is just PR talk gone a bit too far, and in practice the club will make the right decision.

Look, this isn't that far off my view.

The criticism isn't that his career is objectively bad, just that he's not actually in the territory of club legend. Few get there.

I do think the difficulty with how our club's supporters think about Sloane is that its been linked into one by what happened with Dangerfield. Fans have put up such a wall to having to face the reality that the only generational player that the club has produced since the true greats (Roo and Macca) left us and played his best years someone else that they transferred his face on top of Sloane, the one who stayed.

People never re-assessed their view of him after the glow of the 2016 'we don't need danger at all' wore off. Largely we just inflated him and his accomplishments in our mind to avoid the pain that comes with dealing with the hard truth.

You just said that you didn't think it was disrespectful, now it's disrespectful again. Make your mind up.

Yes, not all that good. In the context of 'he's earned the right to call his shot'. A point that no one has been prepared to contest. Stop getting upset for the sake of getting upset.

No idea what Fogarty has to do with it, and Marshall even less.

If Richmond had a bad day in 2017 Sloane would have never been captain, because the club would have never bullied Walker out of the role.
The umpires screwed us. Sure some of our players shit the bed but that was some of the most biased umpiring ever seen to make sure we lost. Our players were constantly held and pushed in the back. Once the Richmond players knew the umpires were doing nothing about it they did it even more.

Listened to the Kelly interview from yesterday, language has certainly changed. No reassurance that he will be signed on, talked about how well he’s done considering, said we are working through next year. That could be retirement, sanfl player, coach
Sounds like some want him retired and some don't. Will depend on whoever holds the power their making a decision to break the impasse.

Walker might at least make an all time AFC team. He's pretty comfortably the second best key forward in our history.

Sloane is the what best midfielder in our history?
Walker over Jarman ? .....probably, based on the number of games in the FWD KP

Have we had many top notch FWD's over the journey though ? ......rare as hens teeth

Jarmans in the team, prob not named as a kpf though.

In part that's my point though. There are always a greater volume of AA midfielders. It's a greater accomplishment to make it as a kpf in that sense.

I think one person said he’s earned the right to make the call ( wasn’t me )

Talk about a severe and almost emotive overreaction to one persons comment

It sounds like the club's preference is for Rory to retire, but he is still pushing for another year. So they are probably working through that now before anything is announced. Going by comments from Rory he wont put his hand up it will need to be the club to make that call. You just have to hope that if the club has made that call he get's on board with it and accepts it is time, rather than holding out hope for a last minute reprieve after the season is finished.

Imagine being a p1ssant fan and saying sloane hasn’t had a good career

Or not acknowledging he’s had some good contributions this year

I don’t want him to play on either next year but why revise and kick the sh1t out of a club legend

It’s the clubs role to now not offer him a list spot

1magine being a pissant and th1nk1ng that say1ng Rory hasn't had that good of a career is 'kicking the sh1t out of a club legend'.

That level of overreaction is almost equal to assigning Rory club legend status.

Of the 15 seasons Rory has played in he has had 2 great seasons (2016,2017) Albeit in the latter half of 2017 his effectiveness was diminished due to being unable to break a tag. Rory had 3 good seasons across 2012, 2013, and 2014.

He played 1 game in his first season, 2009, and 4 games in 2022 when he did a knee.

So we're looking at 5 of 13 seasons where he has been good or better across the whole season.

In other seasons he has performed his role, sometimes he stood up and kicked important goals. However 2018 onward his effectiveness declined significantly.

The bar is low for being a legend if we're calling a bloke with 1 All Australian a legend.

Sloaney career as a player , an AA , respected throughout the league universally …. Many years not far off AA . Let’s remember Luke Shuey hasn’t had one to his name

Had a good 5+ years in highest rated player bracket statistically due to offence / defensive balance

Was good in big moments , got the absolute best out of himself given he was late pick and lacked size + athleticism

Ah yeah ‘not that good’

😂

It’s a better career than your failed attempt to join the cheer squad back in the day

You're very emotive.
