Ross Lyons presser was intriguing. He is an elite coach. No doubt.

He is also very cold and hard and demanding.

I now believe W.A. have the 2 best "StoneKiller" coaches in the AFL at present. Leigh Matthews was the longtime titleholder. Not necessarily the "Best" coach, but "Ruthless" , "Cold" and "Professionally Demanding".

Anyways...

...One of the things he said struck me. He said wtte , "If you can't win a home final against an interstate team, you are way off and it is time to basically rebuild".

I don't include the Eagles in this because they have rebuilt and are on the way up.

But for the Hawks, a loss tonight against an insterstate team would nearly expunge the 08 Glory and a few hard decisions may need to come.

Thoughts.......

Where the Hawks & Saints are is very differant. Players like buddy are still on 24 so they have plenty of time. Particularly with players like Savage, Bruest, etc out of the side playing.

The comment was more directed at the Saints side, not a general rule as to know where your side is at. Saints have some aging stars and he obviously feels that they need to start looking for a young focus point to build the side around. Doesn't add any extra pressure, was just his opinion of where he saw the Saints at.

What a horrible comparison.

Hawthorn have been buoyed by the development of Shiels, Smith, Savage, Bruest, Suckling, Puopolo amongst others, while still being relatively young right across the board.

If we drop tonights game we head into 2012 with a scope for even further improvement from those guys mentioned and players like Lowden, Sierakowski and Langford who are all seen as future senior players on the cusp of putting their hand up for senior selection.

Questions would have to be asked if we lose, but to state that that should then be followed up by drastic changes to the list or direction of the club is folly.

Very different situations. What Lyon was saying about St Kilda was completely true, and he knew that the so-called "premiership window" was closing if not closed. Hawthorn are only just moving into it proper, I think.

What a horrible comparison.

I'm not talking wholesale changes to the list. I'm not talking about Buddy or the young prospects. I'm talking about a re-evaluation of a few , or more than a few, senior and mid range players in tonites side if they lose.

If they can't beat Sydney on the MCG in a final then some hard decisions will be made imo.

The name Hawthorn will still be engraved on the cup.

Lyon's statements is a bit of a generalisation, too.

Hawks in 07 and Pies in 09 almost lost a home final to Adelaide (granted, they won, but it took last kick heroics).

A year later, both won flags.

So his statement might apply to the Saints (and let's be realistic, last year was really their last roll of the dice as a top side anyway), but it's not something I would apply to the Hawks.

Hawthorn will win tonight and have uncovered some quality talent this year.

What will really hurt them is if one of Melbourne/Dogs bites the bullet and takes the brave move and appoints Adam Simpson as coach.

The title of this thread looks like a Damian Barrett special

If Hawthorn fall tonight it'll be because they've been cruelled by injury. Nothing else.

You can't lose your two best forwards and expect to challenge the top 2 sides. Otherwise I think Hawthorn have been ****ing fantastic this year.

As every season goes by, the premiership is becoming the ONLY thing that matters in a season. It is the MAIN thing, but if supporters continue to consider it the ONLY thing, then most of us should simply stop watching the game.

How does this relate to Ross Lyon's comments ? Well, win, lose, or draw tonight, i still think the Hawks have had a good year. There has been plenty to cheer about, plenty of highlights to remember and it has generally been a good ride. If we lose, then Hawthorn and St Kilda have finished their season a week apart to an interstate side. If we had to reel off the highlights of the season though, we would have twice as many. We have a better list, and the ride in 2011 has been much better as a Hawthorn supporter, than sitting through Lyon-inspired borefests.

I hope he was referring to St Kilda with his comments, because if he thinks we need to rebuild then he's a bigger t**l than i thought.

Hawthorn have enough injuiries to excuse a loss. If they don't make the GF next year though they really have to stop with the excuses and start with the inquisition.

i think, win or lose, clarko needs to make hard decisions , regarding premiership players. Ladson, young and batemen are 3 that come to mind.i'm not suggesting they should be let go as i haven't poured over the list, but with injury and form over the last 2 years, they maybe seen as list cloggers.

with the list hawthorn have,i can't see wholesale changes.what hawthorn will have at the beginning of the 2012 season, will be a stronger deeper squad, to the one that began the 2011 season.injuries sometimes can be a blessing for the future, speeding up developement of the younger players.

like all clubs, teams need to make room for new draftees'.most of the 08 premiership players are still in their prime.

I'd hate to see that happen.

I suggest Brayshaw signs an agreement with Simmo & Brad Scott, to the effect that Simmo will come back home as senior assistant coach, and will take over as senior coach at Arden St in 2017, whether Scott has won back-to-back flags or not.

Adam Simpson's son go's for Hawthorn now:D

2006 Qualifying Final, West Coast lost to Sydney in Perth ....

Maybe we should have rolled over and commenced the rebuild?

3 weeks later we won the flag ....

Lyon is a good coach, but frankly his knowledge of what occurs in finals and what that does to ones Premiership window is outside his area of expertise having not won a premiership ....

Welcome to Perth Ross, you picked the right club for a bloke who specialises in coming second. :D
