Roughead captaining Hawthorn in 2017

Essendon vs Hawthorn going to be massive.

The return of Roughead and Essendon players. MCG going to be packed i reckon 80,000 plus.

Has round 1 ever been a sell out? This will get it close.

I have to admit I wasn't expecting Roughie to get it as I thought he wouldn't have been handed too much responsibility since this is his comeback year but the club obviously has a lot of confidence in him so it's terrific news nonetheless. Round 1 is going to be an absolute cracker for the Hawks and Bombers and purely from a neutral perspective I would have hoped O'meara was expected to come back before round 4 as well just to make this match more intriguing than it already is.

How dirty would Lewis be!

Lewis and Roughead are close mates. I expect Lewis to be pleased and happy for his mate.

Congratulations to Roughead.

Best part of it is, I think it means the club expects him to play and he'll be fit to play all next year.

No, not maybe at all.

Take at look at Hawthorn's membership campaign released last year.
This has been coming for a while, and the word on Rough playing from Round 1 has been just as strong.

All class Hawthorn.

Not a sympathy vote either. Was time for Hodge to move on and without Lewis, surely he was the logical choice.
Correct. Definitely not a sympathy vote. Was co-vice-captain along with Lewis, and with him obviously not at the club it was always going to be the case unless they wanted to go with someone younger like Shiels or Smith who are now vice-captains.

And this is why it should open the season Thursday Night.

Surely Carlton and Richmond would agree.

I would also like to add my congratulations and best wishes to Jarryd Roughead on his ascension to the Captaincy of the Hawthorn Football Club.

A grand gesture by the players and staff , a vote of confidence and one in which no player will step back from.
