I remember Dermie telling a story about Lethal, where in a pack Dermie accidentally stole the pill of Lethal and snapped a goal. He then said at half time in the rooms Lethal just stared at him.
Lethal wasn’t the biggest player, but jeez you didn’t want to go between him and the ball.
Muir was just a nut.
Paul Kelly wasn’t the strongest player, but they didn’t call him Captain Courageous for nothing.
Out of today’s players, I’d have to say Archer.

didn't lockett, down morrabbin way, once have someone in a choke hold in the middle of a pack on the ground and ask "How does it fell to die in front of 10000 people"?

or something like that

Yep something similar to that. Plugger stopped blokes breathing. He is without doubt the toughest and most scary footballer that I've seen.

Mick Conlan Fitzroy in the eighties

He was only 4 foot nothing but was as big in brute size of a KPP. He ran allday and if you were in the way look out.

alistair lynch

those punches he threw in the grand final against wakelin last year... pure toughness and courage there, as well as thuggery

"Basher" Williams. Certainly had the most explicit tag in the history of the game. So ruthless that in swan fokelore Basher decked a team mate in the race after the match because he didn't have a go. Believe he sent Ken "Dirty" Hands to bed early in the 1945 blood bath Grand Final. Chitty was finally dealt with in that match and wobbled retired hurt to a forward pocket. Probably the most outragous act of violence on a football field, was in the same GF, when Blues wingman Fred Fitzgibbon who had been suspended after the preliminary final jumped the fence and weighed in the final quarter. They extended his 3 match suspension to 7. Wonder how that offence would be graded in the new Kafkaesqe system?

Have to agree. Apparently alot of ex-servicemen were watching the game, so a fair few players who hadn't fought in the war felt they had to prove themselves in front on the soldiers.

After a terrible war that had cost 20 million lives, concentration camps, the Burma railway and the atrocity of dropping atomic weapons, a bit of biff and mayhem on a footy field in Melbourne was put in perspective and was pretty small beer. The swans decided to exact revenge on the bluemen in the last quarter, won the fight and conceded the match. The even up was a fine old waterfront tradition. Although the swans didn't get a trophy in the cabinet, honour was satisfied. Chitty in dreamland, dirty Hands dozing, the battery of the young Ronnie Clegg avenged. Aah great days. In the alternative real history of footy a blood red letter day

I am surprised Leigh Matthews hasn't had more mentions.
I saw him king hit one player live, Steven Smith of Melbourne, another on TV, Neville Bruns, he also king hit Peter Giles.
That's what he did 50m + behind play.

Then, somewhere near play, off the top of my head, Stuart Trott, Keith Greig, Barry Cable & Bill Duckworth all attracted his attention.

He could play, no doubt, but he could dish it out like there was no consequences.

Dean "Rhino" Grieg from the Saints could go alright, saw him give Gavin Brown a touch up one day, in the middle of a pack brown biffed him, then Grieg just punched him in the head about 6 times toe to toe, browns head just kept recoiling, Brown wasn't necessarily tough but very courageous.
Also Mathews may have been a thug but he got plenty without whingeing about it.

Speaking of blokes who could throw them, Andrew Bews called Michael Long a black something or other.
He must have hit him him 5 times before Bews knew what was going on.
By then he was bleeding from the cut over his eye, and his gob, which by now was well and truly shut.

I know he said what he said as my brother was the trainer on the ground standing next to Longy about to give him a drink.

I was there that day. I think you'll find it was Brad Fox from Essendon. Had the choker hold on him. Beautiful to watch.

Also gave Rick Kennedy a few in his time.

Roger Merrett wasn't bad throwing his weight into a pack

One day Greg Burns from St. Kilda was playing on Roger Merrett and he gave it to him so much he just said "that's enough" and wouldn't go near him or the ball for the rest of the day, Ablett got asked about him and even said "he's not a nice guy, I don't like him" after he gave it to Ablett, and he was no pussy Ablett or Merrett for that matter.

I could only really answer for the AFL after 1997 and with some of the suspensions being as weak as ****, it would be difficult to be right. But the most rough and unreasonable player I've seen, because he could be a champion if he played a game properly was Dave Granger. Just as well he was well retired when Port made the AFL or he'd have been suspended 15 games in the first season.

The mighty Grave Danger, he had a real love for Graham Cornes.

There's footage of Lockett sitting on Kennedy belting the bejesus out of him.

Interestingly, in Jack Dyer's 'wild men of football' Lockett says the only bloke to worry him was Kennedy. "His eyes rolled back into his head and then you knew you were in trouble".

Presumably you got out of trouble by belting him repeatedly.

Kernahan never liked Kennedy. It usually took about 5 minutes for **** to give him one and Kernahan would get his next touch late in the last 1/4.

Roughest - probably Tony Lockett. I think he could smash any of the players listed here, except maybe for the pre 1980's ones that I don't have a clue about.

Big fast and nasty, plus not a lot of self control. Still remember him knocking a young Bluey Mckenna totaly senseless by smacking his elbow into the back of his skull.

Think about it. If you were going to put two of these players in a ring to fight it out I think you'd have the money on Lockett.

Was the angry ant ever subjected to a roids test?
