That was the whole point of not playing him again this year, to get him ready for pre-season and round 1.
Why? He is expected to be fine for day 1 of pre-season.
Remember what happened last year? He sprained his ankle and went down like he had been shot in Round 1. The psychological damage of the injury, along with the physical danger, means we should be very cautious. We have an able replacement in Fitzpatrick right now, it's not like last season.
But if we try to rush him back too soon again like we did at the start of this year, another injury would just about be curtains for him. Give him as long as he needs and then another month just to make sure.
Well said.

Last year he wasn't back at full training until the nab cup. This year he'll likely get a full pre-season. There is caution and then there is paranoia.

Christ Mitch, stop training you might kill yourself!

They aren't rushing him back, he was going to have to have the procedure to remove the screws at some stage during this year anyway, the injury just pushed that forward a lot.

They've said all along that they didn't bring him back this year because they are preparing to get him going for day 1 of pre-season.

but who else do we have in this aspect? easily our best tackler

Hell I'd prefer Dunn as a tagger, he's at least a good 1-on-1 player and instead Jordie screwing up in a 2 meter radius of where he gets the ball Dunn can at least boot the ball 60m to give us time to set up on the rebound with his f*** ups.

You don't just play Jordie because he's our "best" tagger when he's pathetic at everyone else football related.

lol agree to disagree

Jordie is an excellent tagger though. Kept Ablett to his quietest game for the year, and gave us a very good chance of winning the game. Definitely not the best footballer in terms of being a pure mid, but is underrated as far as tagging goes. I do like Dunn as a tagger though.

It's a shame Morton didn't play tagger after his game v Sydney in 2010 when he completely dominated Goodes.

What's Colin Garland? Chopped liver? Jordie did tag Ablett well but let's not pretend he did it on his own, Garland was a massive help with that.

McKenzie isn't a good enough tagger to justify his pathetic football skills, he'd have to be Ryan Crowley for that to be the case.

McKenzie must pinch himself every time he sees his name in the starting lineup.

This is how I reckon Melbourne will go in Round 1, assuming there are no injuries from now until then.

B: Dean Terlich, James Frawley, Colin Garland

HB: Jack Grimes, Tom McDonald, Mitchell Clisby

C: Matt Jones, Jack Trengove, Daniel Nicholson

HF: Jeromy Howe, Chris Dawes, Dean Kent

F: Shannon Brynes, Mitch Clark, Jack Watts

R: Mark Jamar, Nathan Jones, James Magner

INT: Jack Viney, Jake Fitzpatrick, Michael Evans, Sam Blease (Sub)

EMG: Jimmy Toumpas, Jordie McKenzie, Cameron Pedersen

Good luck in Round 1 and in season 2014 Demons! :thumbsu:
The ones I underlined, I don't expect to play, although I'm hoping Clisby gets a permanent spot on the list.

The forward line you put in is what we're all expecting, except not Byrnes... Hogan will be taking that position. Watts will also play in the midfield, so swap him for Fitzy, then there's the squad that should play Round 1. This is all without our new draftees and recruits too, so it is bound to be changed.

Who does Michie push out? Evans, M Jones, Blease?

B: Garland Frawley Terlich
HB: Grimes McDonald Dunn
C: Toumpas Trengove McKenzie
HF: Howe Clark Watts
F: Hogan Dawes Byrnes
R: Gawn N Jones Viney
Int: Evans Fitzpatrick M Jones
Sub: Blease

Fringe: Tapscott, Kent, Strauss, Magner

From that lineup, McKenzie. If McKenzie isn't in the middle tagging or lumping it forward in a contested ball situation, he may as well not be there. He's not quick enough to tag outside players and won't hurt anyone much with the pill.

clearly our mids arent much chop so one of them

Left field option there is Fitzpatrick. With all three tall forwards playing plus Gawn, Watts and Howe there is just no room for another tall in the team.

Has to be a top 15 pick for Fitz though, or an equivalent midfielder. I wouldn't take anything less. Nothing wrong with having competition among the forwards to keep them sharp.

I think the question was pushed out of the 1st team, not out of the club altogether.

Fitzy isn't worth a top 15 pick by a looooooooong way though. He's played what, 10 games? In 3 or 4 years? I like him, and he has plenty of upside, but trading 1st rounders is only done for proven commodities. Fitzy could still turn into nothing much yet. I hope he does well, and believe he should, but it is in no way certain that he will.
I'm aware picks aren't certain either, but in a trading sense #15 would get a lot more than Fitzy if the team at all knows what it's doing. I'd say at most he's worth an early 20's pick.

Unless you're Neeld.

Played five 192cm+ defenders against Essendon and "didn't see a 150 point loss coming".

I think:

B: Terlich Frawley Garland
HB: ----- McDonald Grimes
C: Watts Viney ----- (Vince?)
HF: Howe Dawes -----
F: Kent Clark Hogan
R: Gawn Jones Trengove
Int: Michie Toumpas -----
S: -----

That's part of a team I'm fairly comfortable with I think.

The rest will come from trades or development - #2 (trade for 2-3 players or draft?) Vince (likely apparently), Lyons (?), Greenwood (?), M Jones, Blease, Tapscott, Strauss, Evans, McKenzie, Magner, Byrnes, Jamar....

A lot of average players in that 2nd part there - hopefully we can develop these guys a fair bit.

Tough on Matt Jones. Didn't set the world on fire but was solid and dependable. Even if we pick up a few more experienced mids I still think he's in our best 22.
