Did anyone notice schoey playing back quite a bit?

Supporters don't want to see or hear it but I think putting him back to defence might help as his best asset is running in straight lines at the ball using his foot skills. As mentioned by others Schoey in the fwd line creates a too top heavy scenario and with Gibbo on his last legs we may just have to persist with him in defence.

Maybe one for people who were actually at the ground ...

I couldnt hear any booing of the bombers, or more noteably Jobe, nor any banners, syringes, tshirts or whatever. Can understand C7 may have avoided certain section of the crowd, or played with mics for crowd noise, but was anything actually happening at the ground?

Would have been 70% * fans in the crowd and they were absolutely loud as hell. The TV feed wouldn't have to censor shit - and whenever one of their 'so brave' drug cheats did anything good they all went bezerk. It made our woeful performance even harder to endure. And as usual our fans resemble a library more than a footy crowd - we are the most subdued set of fans out there. Not a criticism a just an observation.

Bombers played really well. Had a lot to prove and they rode the emotional wave home. It must be a huge release for them and their supporters to put the bans behind them and move onto a new chapter. A part of me is happy for them.

Hawks showed that they're not going to be easy beats in 2017 but struggled with the pace of Essendon's midfield and looked a bit disorganised both up forward and down back.

Those of you that want to stay sane in 2017 should probably remind yourselves that we aren't premiership favourites and are very much a team in transition. If you expect us to be the team we were between 2012-2015 you are going to have very frustrating and an emotionally draining season. Part of the cycle is the process bringing through new faces and rebuilding. When you're in that stage of the cycle you have to learn to appreciate things other than the four points.

I told myself before the season started that I wasn't going to focus on the results at all in 2017 but rather player development. I think refocussing expectations (as a supporter at least) can make following a team that isn't realistically in premiership contention much more enjoyable. Having 4 flags from the past 8 seasons in the bank helps soften the blows also.

Outstanding post and perspective !

Solid first hit out. Great effort from Tommy and stoked to have Roughy back.

Thought JOM was good in part, and will only get better.

Henderson was solid. Langford fights and fights, but his disposal makes me close my eyes some times.

Some ordinary skills throughout the game and some really bad defending. How many goals did they kicks from crumbing over the back? 6? 7?

Happy that we got through without injury and that we were somehow in front at half time even though we had so much to improve on.

Not going to be too concerned at this stage, due to it being Round 1, but we should be better than what we were in a few contests tonight and I think the boys all know that.

One thing I did notice a few times is our forwards being held by the arm as they attempted to get to the drop of the ball. That's inglfuriating to watch when the umpires just ignore it.

On another note...

I don't really understand why Essendon fans were booing Vickery and yelling vitriol at him as he left the field. Did he do something?

Pretty odd that they'd take such offense to anyone booing their players, but then get to their feet and scream obscenities at Vickery when he off in huge numbers. It was very odd.

On Vickery's getting booed, I think that's because he got a free kick and they're not happy. Weird..

I know that. He had potential for sure but so much bloomin' hype over him ever since it was rumoured we would get him and he's always seemed pretty full of himself. I wil never understand getting him and letting Sam go - a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Not sure the hype is coming from us though. We didn't parade him around like the second coming of Matt Spangler. It was typical media hyperbole.

Another highlight from tonight...

This mouthy Hawthorn supporting female who would not shut up all night sitting behind me and my father in law...

She kept crapping on about what a hardcore hawthorn fanatic she was at full pitch...

Then O'Meara gets the ball and she yells out "who's that?"

She follows suit when Tom gets it.

When Henderson gets the ball it had to be explained to her that he came across from the crows.

Dead set, she eventually had other Hawk fans turning around telling her to give it a rest.

I don't understand what is going on???

Its like the Grand Final was just won, the way Basil has been smacking his lips on the Essendon pole.

They are returning drug cheats, what is so 'special' about this.

And its a round one game FFS
its a great point - they media are acting as though these are players who were all down on luck .. injured .. family issues .. sickness, and coming back is such an amazing story ..

THEY WERE BANNED FOR CHEATING FFS

In early October, right aftet Hawthorn wins thr premieshipr, we are going to look back on tonights g ame and lsugh

I never say this to a Hawks fan - but what are they cutting the meth with down your way?

Had a similar girl behind me who didn't know who Sicily was. Was very odd.

I'm thinking of the one they just replayed there, where Smithy roosted the ball from the back of the centre circle and it went through for a goal after Hurley failed to touch it.

The guy they pay to stand on the line and adjudicate these things was sure enough not to bother calling for a review, and should be sacked.
I am of the understanding the monitor monkeys upstairs can review any score they wish. Remember Buddy's goal last quarter 2013 prelim,
all clear goal, ruck men waiting for centre bounce and umpire tells them there's a review on, on a goal given all clear, called from upstairs
according to Lethal who was commentating. So why didn't they review this?

Dropped marks, fumbles, missed targets. Looked slow as. Umpiring woeful. If any ump thinks Hartung is going to nominate they should be sacked.

We used to do the little things well. Sicily spoiling McEvoy in the defensive square, resulting in a goal a case in point.

Chippy chippy style very annoying. No flow in our game.

Lack of contested marking ability frustrating.

If is was Clarko I would make the whole side carry a footy around with them for the next week to get the feel of having it in your hands.

A lot of worrying signs but hopefully the Bombers were playing above themselves and we had an off night. (insert fingers crossed emoticon)

And to the Essendon fans (including the 2 I spent the night with watching the game) enjoy the win. What ever your attitude to the doping scandal is you did not bring it on yourselves. 4 years of doping shite would suck. Hopefully we never see doping scar the game we love again.

I've never seen so much noise and elation derived out of a win in round 1. What a crazy atmosphere that was.
**** me, those bombers supporters are something else.

It's quite sad when you think about it. Imagine if winning tonight, or any H&A game for that matter, meant that much to us.

Watching us win all those premierships while they suffered so immensely must've been rather hard on them.

Genuine speed is generated by ball use, not legs. 31 scoring shots for only 12 goals never has been good enough. An entire season to improve and I think we'll be okay.
Yeah, kicking in general was ordinary and dare I say it un-Hawk like. Might be AC's first port of call this week, a line through those that ran well below the required team average.

I commented about this before the match. The whole scenario was similar to round 1 1991 where Adelaide were playing for their credibility, the Hawks were simply kicking off a new season. They played as if it was a Grand Final.

Essendon were playing for their lives tonight. They won't be able to sustain it. The Hawks were simply kicking off the season. I wouldn't worry about tonight's loss all that much. Our season starts next week.

All goals are reviewed.

The goal umpire needs to call for a review if he thinks 'maybe/maybe not' but calls a behind.

The goal umpire needs to give himself an uppercut if he thinks 'clearly touched' but it wasn't.

That we've been so good for so long has made all this sort of rubbish tolerable, I'm going to struggle to watch games this season.

"Hartung nominated. No-one nominated. We'll sort it out later."

Have skimmed over a lot of this thread but I'm surprised I haven't seen anybody mention our clearly subpar goal accuracy. In the past we've been good at it but tonight a number of our players missed frankly easy shots (both from set shots and on the run). Sucks because even though we were pretty dismal in a lot of areas, we still might've actually had a shot at the game but we kicked our way out of it in crucial moments.

Couldn't agree more, but as hard as it was for them it was so much more fun for us
