Autopsy Round 1, 2018: Hawthorn defeats Collingwood

Nice start, probably won as we should against an average side. Pretty shaky in that final term and there was some shaky moments, we did manage to steady though which was good.

Cyril makes a huge difference to our side, our forward pressure goes to the next level with him, but adding Impey along with Pop and Punky and now Silk we have a special group of tacklers in the F50.

Great start to the year, let's home GAJ pings his hammy tomorrow.

Bit worried to be honest. We're carrying way too many passengers. That was one of the worst Collingwood teams I've ever seen and they were one goal away from running over the top of us. Hope it's just rustiness.

Good signs from JOM - needs to cut out the clangers and he'll be away.
I saw that you wrote we had 7 players who were 'bottom 4' material. What crap, mate.

It's Round 1, we're rusty and we've still got a few players to return, but to think you'd suggest 7 of our 22 tonight belong in a bottom 4 side.....bloody hell.

Great effort to 3/4 time then it was awful. Don’t know what to make of that last quarter.

Yeah I'm probably being harsh and I'm usually very optimistic. But that Collingwood team are dreadful and we almost let them back in the game.

Maybe I'm sitting under a rain cloud. Just found that hard to watch at times.

Fantastic game
Pies threw everything at us, wasn’t like they bent over

Mitchell has to get the 3.

Really missed Rioli. He broke the game open with that spell!

The replay I saw of Burton, I thought he’d fractured his leg, so if it’s an ankle, I’ll be happy

Sicily is a damn fine footballer (lucky not to give away a 50) so glad he’s a hawk

Gunner as a fwd really frees up our other forwards

Schoenmakers didn’t get the stats, but created was accountable. When you aren’t getting it, the least you can so is make sure your opponent isnt making an impact

Hardwick hodge #2

Doc WOG
Is Doc a Wog?

Is anyone else worried about Rough. Absolutely adore the the bloke, but looks out of sorts. Has had cancer, still suffering it’s after effects, minimal impact tonight outside one soft junk goal. Still flying for marks with one hand. Captaincy may be a burden. I’m concerned.
A quiet game has nothing to do with cancer. Get a grip.

Our rebuild of this side is remarkable. It’s only in its second year and we are a 5-8 side. Amazing.

The players were absolutely out on their feet in the last quarter. Part of our ganeplan means we zone back really hard and it means our forwards need to be efficient. My only concern is Roughy and Shoey and we’re a gun midfielder short in rotations. Burgers and Rioli can’t go in there much anymore.

I have said all preseason we will make finals on the back of our master coach and hopefully win win, but we need a few more players to be ready for the flags again. We will get them and I see another era coming in this team. In order a gun forward, midfielder and rebounding Gibbo type defender. I say this because I see Sicily ending up forward, he’s just too good not to end up there.

Pretty good win, bit disappointing we didn't kick the first couple of the last and really go on with it, but it was a solid performance.

Was really impressed with Henderson, probably saw him more of a depth player, but proved me and several others wrong tonight, so hopefully he can keep it up.

Jaegar was really good, Impey and Cyril better as the game went on, Breust, Gunston and Poppy, looked hungry and back to something close to their best.

Sicily, Mitchell Stars! 8 day break so hope Shiels, McEvoy and Burton all get up next week.

Round 1 is all about getting miles in the legs, taking the hits, getting into the grind of the play-recover-train structure of the football season.

There was plenty to like from the old guard tonight, and we had some decent efforts from our second stringers throughout the night.

The season is always a work in progress, so some of the guys who had quieter night tonight are bound to be different players in 2-3 weeks.

Really enjoyed that. A bit scratchy but the fade out/momentum shift is a bit of a concern but the fact that they could stop is encouraging. Very enjoyable watching Breust, Cyril, Poppy and those little touches by JOM.

Looked shot at times last year and I think the burden of captaincy might force him internally to play every week when really he should be managed and just being around the group would be a spur on. The bloke is a deadset warrior to even be alive, let alone playing elite level sport. But I'm not sure there is much in the tank of the big fella after 2018. Thing is, outside Burgers, nobody else is really jumping out as Captain material.
