Autopsy Round 1, 2018: Hawthorn defeats Collingwood

Scrappy at times but absolutely stoked with the win. How good is having Cyril back!? T Mitchell what can I say - almost becoming my favourite player and he’s played a year and one game. Sicily, Bruest, Silk all very solid and I thought Henderson showed plenty. Backline held up well. Omeara got lots of it, I’m not yet convinced yet but hope to soon be. A few had quite games, but great signs.
Thank god we didn’t persist with that rubbish long kick into the forward line like we did in the jlt.

Mitchell was spectacular, but that's what we've come to expect. Probably why he's everyone's super coach captain.

Jaegar was excellent in the first half, a bit quieter in the second, but the important thing was seeing him kick the footy, and burst away from stoppages.

Breust was very good, Cyril was lively, Gunston got involved, Sicily is growing in stature, Hardwick is playing as a leader, Howe was solid; there really was a lot to like. Jarman showed flashes, but needs to remember to do some grunt work, it can't all be sizzle. Good to see Frawley do a bit, and Burgoyne can play as long as he wants to, he still affects the game every week.

Burton getting hurt is the concern; he's going to be our next best player, and needs to be on the field as often as possible. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

Another concern is the bombing high into the forward line. It works if Wayne Carey is in there, but we don't have a contested marking king like that. The problem is the delivery isn't what it was 2011-2015, which means we can't rely on bullet passes to leading forwards. I did think we looked quick around the ground, which seemed to overwhelm Collingwood at times. Faster teams won't have that problem, though.

Still, it's a better start than losing to the cheats first up last year. I'm feeling more optimistic about this year than I did before the game.

Great to get the win but it wasn’t footy you can see us winning a premiership with. Optimistic that the transition is still teething and will really come into effect this year.

For all those that knock Henderson and Doc, I thought both their games were very good and highly serviceable. They go about their role and do what needs to be done (except missing the occasional Clanger goal..).

BB needs to find a little composure, I know he had a knock and was sore, but he passed the ball directly to an opposition player a couple of times, and swept the ball out in front of the opposition goals 3-4 times. Just need to go towards the boundary if you must, but putting it at your opposition's feet in their goal square is inexcusable.

He wasn’t as clean as you’d like - but I really enjoyed Jarman’s first outing. Thought his endeavour was good and once he gels with Poppy and Cyril he’s going to form a very dangerous trio with them.

21 games to go before we can say that if we are good enough.

I reckon 13 wins should lock in top 8, so only 12 more rounds to go :) But being serious, yes, a very long way to go. Still think the most likely start will be 2-3 after 5 rounds. Anything better will be a bonus, but the win tonight super important for our season given the next 3 rounds shaping up to be quite tough.

Jaeger had 27 possessions.
Tom Mitchell had 27 contested and 27 uncontested possessions.

... let that sink in a second...

Yep.. the reverse applies too re letting it sink in.... how O'mera in the first quarter dominated the stoppages... kept his feet, eyes up, walking out of congestion, unlike i have seen him before in brown and gold :)

Have never understood the dislike for Henderson, one of my favourites actually. Honestly don't think he's put in a bad game since joining us. Nothing spectacular but pretty solid most of the time. Not everyone can be a star.

Can we spare hendo Cyril and poppy in June for the Socceroos?
