Really surprised by the reaction here. Maybe it’s cause I’m based overseas, but I love being able to watch the boys on television over the weekend. Its my one remaining big link to aus. I’m not watching it for the crowd. I enjoy the matches with 8k at Lansing as much as 100000 at the G.

The decision to have an AFL season in light of the serious problems which are gripping the world is simply incredible. Anything to minimise financial loss seems to be the mantra. What a huge move and wtf have we become. Even if this virus is a “hoax”, wow what a huge move. I truly hope they’ve made the right call, but my logic suggests otherwise.

This will be one of the most talked about decisions in Australian sporting history. Probably Australian history in general.

The show must go on I suppose hahah.

GO THE HAWKERS!!!!!

I think they, being the AFL, the players, clubs and broadcasters, media etc are trying to minimise the financial damage the virus is causing.

The more games they play the less jobs that are lost, the less handouts clubs need to stay afloat, the less chance there is of clubs or the AFL going under.

I think they were hoping the government would stop it and give them a hand out but that hasn't happened so this is about survival for them.

Same Tommy.
We are in total lockdown in Manila... so from a personal viewpoint, I can't wait to watch.

Agree with this. Grew up in Perth. During the 80s only got snippets of the Hawks on the Winners. Then we went national and got the occasional game on TV. Had a few years when you could see team on TV every week and go to one game (if you were lucky) live. Now live in Melbourne and can go to most games so that is great. But to have people complain cause they can't physically go to the game......

I still have to go to work in and around heaps of people in the transport industry, so I have no issue with 22 blokes playing 22 blokes in a empty stadium. I think we're all aware of what is more likely to spread COVID-19.

As for the game on Sunday, sadly I think we'll get beat, think home crowd advantage was pivotal in our quest to upset the Lions.

Silk at CHF lol. Don’t ever change Clarko Good to see Gunston named in the squad. Surprised that CJ didn’t make the extended squad. Final bench for mine should be Gunston, Shiels, Ollie and Nash but reckon Poppy gets the nod over Irish.

Pretty good mix of size, speed and versatility.

Anything can happen round 1 so wouldn’t be shocked by a close win or a 4 goal loss.

Guessing the starting interchange locks would be Shiels, Scrimshaw. Leaves the other 6 to fill the gaps as needed

Love nothing more than watching this great club, however just can’t get excited about this season. No crowds will look terrible and players will hate it. No VFL for players to push for selection. Shortened quarters and season, and the season could stop at any stage.

It's going to be a rubbish season. I wonder how hard the TV ratings will drop.

4 of the 6 defenders are non-runners. Either slow or just don't provide run with the ball. Only Morrison and Frost are runners, and if your KPD is your runner, that's a worry.

I'm worried the mids will flood back to provide the transition run and thus the forwards will have to push up the ground and leave an empty F50.

Against fast teams, the lack of run can be exploited against Hawthorn.

Interested to see how the coaches have used the off season to prepare for this...
